Two
Everything in the house was exactly like my father had left it. Including my old room. It took me a few days to clean everything up so there was no more dust, and as it was summer, the nights were short and thankfully uneventful. I was woken up a few times by sounds, but Tae was always relaxed, so I wasn't worried.
The house was clean and I had just waded through the vegetable garden at the side of the yard when Tae's body language changed. I looked up, as it was still morning, to see him stood next to me, alert and staring out into the distance.
"What is it?" I asked him, getting to my feet. He looked at me and wagged his tail, before staring again, and I knew there was no threat.
Brushing my hair from my face and dusting the dirt from my bare knees, I moved to the fence and looked out. Coming up the single road was a flashy looking car, and I sighed. I knew exactly who was inside.
"Good morning, Gentlemen," I said as two men in smart suits got out of the car, "Can I help you?"
They both seemed quite young (and arrogant), but I decided to humour them. I knew their type. My father had been dealing with them for years. I, however, was going to try a different approach; he usually just sent the dog to chase them off.
"Good morning, Miss," The darker haired man smiled at me, flashing a smile that would probably make other women's knees weak, "Are you the daughter of Kim Namjoon?"
I winced at the sound of my father's name. His death was still recent and was causing me a lot of pain, "Yes. Can I help?"
"First of all," The other man, a little taller with brown hair, spoke, "We at Spring Day homes are very sorry for your loss,"
I grunted, "I know what you want, just get on with it,"
Although a little startled, both men nodded, trying to keep their professional demeanour. The one with darker hair stepped closer, reaching to put his hand on the fence, "We-"
Tae, who had been quiet and relaxed beside me, let out a loud, deep bark. The man jumped, snatching his hand back with wide eyes, "Would you mind putting your dog away?" He asked with a slight tremble to his voice.
I rolled my eyes, "The fence is electrified," I said, "He was warning you not to touch it. And no, I won't put him away," I patted Tae's head and he wagged his tail, before laying down by my feet. Both men once again seemed to straighten themselves out.
"We would like to talk to about this land," The taller one said, "We-"
"You know," I interrupted, "You still haven't introduced yourselves. Isn't that a bit rude?"
"My apologies," The taller one smiled, "My name is Kim Seokjin," He tentatively offered his hand and I stepped forward, shaking it.
"I am Jeon Jungkook," The other said, his eyes flickering to my dog before offering his own hand, "We are both realtors from Spring Day Homes,"
"I know," I said, stepping back again, "You guys have been after this land for as long as I remember.
The land that now belonged to me was roughly ten acres. The home itself stood towards the back of the land, with only an acre of trees behind us. It was quite a big home, with four bedrooms, a double garage and a large living area, but the fence around the house left us only with a small garden. To outsiders, it might look strange that we have a fenced area within our fenced off land, but that was because they didn't know the truth.
Seokjin laughed a little, "Well, yes, but our client has now raised the offer. He is very interested in purchasing this land from you,"
Jungkook nodded, "He has now raised his offer to three-"
"I'm not selling," I said firmly. Although I did not want to live here, I couldn't give this land up without coming to some sort of solution first.
"Of course, we understand that this land and home has been in your family for generations," Seokjin said, which was an understatement. This land had been in my family for hundreds of years. All because of the night, "But-"
Both men jumped when Tae jerked his head up. He slowly stood, his body stiffening, and I looked over at where he was focused.
There, in the distance, was the terrifying image that had been burned into my memory. The mist was starting to roll in.
"It's summer, the mist isn't supposed to come unless it's dark," I muttered.
The two realtors looked at me, confused.
"Sorry, did you say something?" Jungkook asked, "We didn't catch that-"
"You need to leave, now," I said, moving towards them. Tae moved with me, clearly uncomfortable.
"Well, we haven't finished explaining our client's offer," Seokjin said with a smile, "We would rather complete that, before we leave,"
I could see then, why my father would send his dog to chase off realtors, but with the mist quickly rolling in, I wouldn't risk sending him out there.
"Fuck," I muttered. The mist was already half-way down the road. Even if they left now, one of them would have to get out of their car to open the gate to the property. It wasn't safe.
"Fine," I said with a forced smile, "Please, come in,"
