Thirteen

"Well, what do you want to know?" I said, once again taking a seat in my father's chair. Yoongi also stepped away from the window, sitting next to his girlfriend and wrapping an arm around her shoulders as Jungkook paced around the room.

"They only come out at night, right?" Jungkook asked.

I nodded, "And in the mist,"

"So when there's no sunlight, essentially," He concluded, "Does the light hurt them?"

"I don't know, nobody has ever seen one during the day," I sat forward, "What are you thinking?"

"I'll get there," He said, "So they don't come out in the light and they don't come past the electric fence," He paused, turning to look at me, "What about snow and rain?"

I shrugged, "The same," I said, "They will come out only during the dark, it doesn't matter what the weather is,"

He hummed, returning to his pacing, "If they are scared of the electric fence, does that mean they are scared of lightning? Do they come out in heavy rain and storms?"

I thought back to my childhood, "Heavy rain won't stop them," I said, "But I don't actually recall seeing them during a storm,"

"Interesting," Jungkook mumbled, stopping at the end of the sofa. Yoongi and Daisy were watching him intently; Daisy seemed nervous but interested, but Yoongi looked fed up.

"Get to the point, you're making me dizzy," He snapped after Jungkook had been quiet for a while.

"And you are interrupting my thoughts, shut up," Jungkook snapped at him. Yoongi stood up angrily but Daisy pulled him back down.

"Yoongi, please, this isn't the time to argue. Just let him think,"

Her boyfriend grunted but remained silent.

I was also interested in what the realtor was thinking, but I knew it would be better to let him string his thoughts together. Finally, after what felt like hours, Jungkook spoke.

"Yoongi helped me piece it together," He said, looking over at me, "When he called them tree monsters,"

He closed the distance between us so he was looking down at me, "Bee, what if they don't just look like trees. What if they are the trees?"

"That would explain why they won't touch the electric fence," Yoongi grunted.

"That's right!" Jungkook whirled around to face him, "And lightning!"

"Why?" I asked, puzzled. I knew I was being stupid, but I had been taught a certain way for so long that it was drilled into my head, "Wood doesn't conduct electricity,"

"Well, yeah," Yoongi said, looking at me, "But sparks create fires. If even a small spark landed on them, fwoosh," He spread his hands out, "Up in flames,"

"Oh!" Daisy cried, "That makes sense! It also could explain why they aren't out in the daylight,"

Again, I  was lost.

Daisy smiled at me, "To keep it basic," She explained, "Plants need light to survive. Photosynthesis and all that,"

"Oh," I said, "But Lurkers don't have leaves,"

"A lot of the trees here don't have leaves," Jungkook said, "Jin pointed it out when we drove in. He was wondering if the forest had some kind of sickness, or that some of the branches on random trees were just cut off for firewood or building,"

My eyes widened, "So some of the trees... Aren't trees?"

Jungkook nodded, excitement clear on his face, "What if - this is just a theory - what if you burned those trees during the day. Would the Lurkers die?"

"But hang on a second," I said, holding up my hand, "This is a good idea and all, but if it was true, wouldn't my family have discovered it years ago? It also doesn't account for the fact that they eat people,"

Jungkook wilted a little, but Yoongi spoke up.

"How long has this land been in your family?"

"Hundreds of years," I responded.

"Then that's why," He said, "Hundreds of years ago, your family probably just believed they were some kind of devil. They probably thought more to surviving and praying or something to stay alive. As the land has been passed down generation to generation, you were all taught about them and how to keep safe and survive. You were raised to stay alive, not to investigate and kill them,"

The room was silent until Daisy smiled and cuddled into him, "You're so smart,"

I nodded in agreement. I had no idea that Yoongi was so intelligent and rational, but I had only seen the aggressive side of him. It was pretty stupid to assume he wasn't clever, as he had gotten into university and passed his courses.

Jungkook clapped his hands together, "Why don't we try it out tomorrow?" He said, "We can go through the forest and destroy some of the trees and see?"

"But," Daisy said suddenly, "Just because they don't move in the day, doesn't mean they can't, right? What if we go to burn one and it just moves and tears us all up?"

"Good point," I said, "But there are a few leafless trees near the house. We can test it on one that's close,"

"We still have about eight hours until it's light," Yoongi said, stretching and leaning back on the sofa, "We've got time to decide,"

"We just have to stay inside until then-" Jungkook's sentence was cut off by something that made my heart stop.

"Why did the power go out?" I asked, my voice almost as quiet as the sudden silence in the room, "Why has it gone out?!"
