Nineteen
Daisy covered her mouth and squeezed her eyes shut, hiding her face in Yoongi's chest as he wrapped his arms around her protectively.
Jungkook's eyes were wide with fear and he looked over at me, clearly expecting guidance.
I honestly had no idea what to do, so gestured for everyone to be silent. I wasn't sure how long we would be about to wait the Lurkers out in my father's wardrobe, but let out the breath I didn't realise I was holding when I heard the crunching of feet over the broken wooden door, followed by footsteps heading away from the bedroom.
"What do we do?" Yoongi whispered quietly, "We can't stay here! There's no escape and they'll find us!"
"We can't go out there!" Jungkook argued, "It's too dangerous!"
"I agree with Yoongi," I stated, "It's not safe here. But we can't just leave,"
"We need a distraction," Daisy said, "Then we can sneak out, right? We can get to the truck,"
"Good idea, but what can we use to distract them?" Yoongi said, "They're too fast,"
It was silent again as everyone wracked their brains for an answer. I, however, already knew what I had to do.
"I'll do it," I whispered, "I'll distract them and you guys go for the truck,"
"No!" Daisy hissed, moving to me, "No, you can't. We have to stick together!"
I smiled and placed my hand on her shoulder, "There's no other way. None of you know the Lurkers like I do. None of you know my house like I do. It's the only way,"
Tears filled Daisy's eyes, "Bee, you can't,"
I took a deep breath and grabbed my father's shotgun and one of the torches, "The keys are in the truck. They will open the main gate. If anything happens to me," I had to take another breath, "Take care of Tae for me,"
"Bee, no-" Jungkook whispered,
Moving in front of me. I just stepped around him and addressed my dog.
"Tae, silent guard them," I leaned over and placed a kiss on his huge head, before slowly opening the door, "I'll tell you when to go,"
"Bee, wait. Take this," I turned and Yoongi tossed something small to me. It was a lighter. I nodded my thanks and stepped out, closing the door carefully behind me. There didn't seem to be any Lurkers upstairs, but a quick look down the staircase revealed a number of them milling around.
"You can do it," I breathed to myself, flicking the lighter, "Face your fears. You can do it,"
A small flame appeared on the top of the lighter and I carefully lifted it to the top of the perfume drenched makeshift torch. It flared to life and I stuffed the lighter in my pocket before sneaking down the stairs.
Just as I reached the bottom of the staircase, however, I realised that it had gone totally silent.
Each of the Lurkers was dead still in the living room, making it seem like a forest of silver birch trees had sprouted inside my family home. I could tell that they were observing me, and when one disappeared and reappeared behind me, I swung the torch with a yell, barely missing it before dashing to the kitchen.
Almost as one, the Lurkers moved after me, staying just out of reach but making lunges for me as I backed myself up into the wall.
"Fuck!" I cried, wishing I had taken two of the torches instead of just one, "Go!" I screamed as loudly as I could, moving as much as I could in order to avoid being caught as well as keeping their attention, "Go! Now!"
Praying that they were creeping down the stairs by now, I continued to fight back, tiring at an alarming rate. I wasn't sure how much long I could keep the Lurkers back, and I was even less sure about how long the flame would last.
However, I heard a loud snarl and a scream by the door, and through the thin bodies of the Lurkers, could see that Tae had hold of one by the head and was tearing into it with ferocity as Jungkook and Daisy weakly swung their torches while Yoongi tried to push them towards the door.
The Lurkers surrounding me all stepped back and turned and at that moment, I did the only thing I could think of.
I threw my torch away, straight into the group of Lurkers and backed up into the kitchen door that led outside.
"Come and get me, fucking trees!"
