Nine
Jungkook was back sitting on my sofa wearing fathers clothes. Tae was at the window, sitting and looking outside while I sat in my father's chair, thinking.
"I've never seen them so active before," I muttered out loud, "They hang around, obviously, but never like this,"
"Never?" Jungkook squeaked, "Then what's changed?"
I tried to think back to everything my father had ever told me. The Lurkers had never acted like this in my entire life. Except...
"One night, they did," I said suddenly, "I didn't realise before because I was so upset, but I remember Hope was-"
"Who's Hope?" Jungkook asked curiously. I think he was trying to get the image of the Lurker from his mind.
"She was my father's dog. My favourite. She saved me the night I was in the mist," I smiled a little at her memory, "She used to climb into bed with me when I had nightmares," I took a breath, trying to get back on target, "Anyway, she was acting like Tae, jumping up at the windows and barking a lot. I slept in my father's room with him that night because I was upset, and Hope was constantly at the window,"
"Why?" Jungkook asked, "Why is this time and that time the same?" I had to give it to him; he might have been scared, but he was becoming more and more rational and he really was very intelligent. He seemed to have a lot of good questions to ask.
It suddenly snapped why both nights were the same, "They tasted blood," I said, "That was the night they got my Shepherd. Today, they took your senior,"
Jungkook lowered his gaze at the mention of Jin, "I'm sorry," I said, "I wasn't thinking. The way I said that, was-"
"No, it's fine," He said, "He was taken. I just don't know what I'm going to tell people... Or the police?"
"Is it his car?" I asked, also worrying about the same thing.
"Company car," He said, shaking his head.
I sighed, "Well, the police have long known about my family being here. For generations, we have kept the fence out front high, and as far as the police know, we are keeping people out because we have large bears and wolves in here, that are very aggressive," I didn't want to lie about a person's death, but we had no choice, "Seokjin ventured out into the mist and didn't return. A bear probably took him. Maybe a pack of starving wolves. We couldn't call because of our phone service here,"
Jungkook ran his fingers through his thick, dark hair, "I guess. Sorry, I interrupted, what were you saying?"
I paused, "I was just saying that the Lurkers might be behaving this way because they're all riled up. They tasted blood and they want more,"
It was silent between us again, interrupted by the low growls coming from Tae by the window.
"What time is it?" Jungkook asked, "How long will it be dark?"
"It's seven," I said, glancing at the clock on the wall, "But that doesn't matter. As long as the mist is still there, you won't be able to leave,"
"Has it ever been here so long before?" He asked, "I'm not trying to be rude, but I kind of want to go home,"
I smiled, "I don't blame you. I miss my old home. No Lurkers, no growling, no danger. If there was a mist, people would just complain about it, but nobody would be torn to shreds," I sighed, "A few times it's lasted a day or two, but not often. I'm hoping it clears up by morning,"
Tae stopped growling and sat down again. I was so thankful he was here with me; I couldn't imagine being in this house without a dog, but Tae was special. I did love my father's dogs, but they never belonged to me. I liked them, but apart from Hope, I didn't have a bond with any of them. Tae was mine. It was different.
"Hey, Bee?" Jungkook said suddenly, bringing my attention back to him from my dog, "Thanks for helping me and letting me stay,"
"No need to thank me," I smiled, "Any decent person would do the same,"
"You were trying to keep us here, weren't you?" He said, "Before. You were trying to get us to stay without creeping us out,"
"Yeah. I didn't want anybody to get hurt, but I did a pretty poor job,"
He shook his head, "I'm still here," He said, "I'd say you've done amazing. We wouldn't have believed you if you just straight up told us that there are monsters in your forest,"
My reply was cut off my a buzzing sound and I reached into the pocket of my jean shorts to pull out my phone.
The name of my best friend was flashing on the screen and I frowned, surprised that she had even managed to get through.
I swiped on the screen and held it up to my ear.
"Hello?"
"He- Bee- How- In?- Gate locked-"
My heart froze in my chest, "What? Daisy, where are you? What do you mean the gate's locked? You're not outside my property, are you?"
"Ca- hear- wa- surpr- you-. Ho- unloc- the gate?"
"Shit," I muttered, "Don't come in, Daisy, stay there!"
"Oka- Will wa- come get- us-"
The line disconnected and I looked over at Jungkook in horror, "My friend is at the front gate," I said, in a hushed tone, my body cold from fear, "She's trying to get in,"
