They Left

The white-haired girl steps up the the microphone and the waiting reporters fall silent until a young reporter calls out the first question. “Is it true you’re stopping being heroes?!” The girl lifts her tired blue eyes to meet the reporters wondering brown eyes. “Yes. But not for the reasons you think. If we,” She motions to her teammates who are standing behind her “Always look out for humans you will never learn to protect yourselves.” over the scribbling of pencils another voice calls out “Is it true you helped train soldiers from all around the world?” the girl nods “We don’t only protect US citizens but all humans. And you must learn to defend yourselves if our job can ever be seen as complete.” A few murmurs are her reply as she waits for the next question.

“Are you leaving because the UN wants to set rules on what you can do?” her eyes harden and she waits several minutes gathering her thoughts before answering. “That is what they told you? That may be what they said but they wanted to use us as weapons and make it so they could give humans our gifts.” Angry murmurers come from the crowd at this as a teenager who had snuck in calls out “So you're just going to leave us? After everything thats happened you're just going to leave? What if the Invaders come back.”  The white haired girl’s face changes to show the fire and fierceness she is known for. “We are not leaving. We are taking a step back and letting humans retake the reins in your future. If they do return, or if we are ever needed we will return.”

“Are you going to stay together?” Someone else calls and the girls blue eyes tear up slightly “We have decided it would be in our best interests to separate and cut all contact.” gasps come from the crowd knowing how much the heroes cared for each other. “Is their anyway we can repay you for all you’ve done for us?” A woman asks stepping forward. “There is one. In the coming years make sure every new generation knows about us and sees this video. If the world ever needs us and you're leaders refuse to do anything. Yell the words ‘We need you back Supri!’ we will hear you wherever you are. And we will answer the call. No more questions.” The white haired girl turns to her teammates and nodding in goodbye before they all went their separate ways blending into society never using their gifts and  always remembering their pledge and everyday missing their friends but knowing it was the only way.
