One Way Up
Since their last meeting, Y/N had been locked away in a new room. She was far away from anyone else, more isolated than she already had been, and she hadn't seen Minho since. He had been the one person WICKED let her interact with all this time in an attempt to keep them both sane, but that privilege had since been stripped away.
To hear the buildings sirens wailing did come as a surprise, though. She had no idea what was going on but all she could hope was that it meat someone was here. That things were going to change.
Teresa had just departed from Thomas and Newt, leaving them to fend for themselves on the run from Janson and his men while they looked for Minho.
Y/N had said to find another way. When teresa stole that piece of fabric with Thomas' blood on it from when she took out all of the Gladers tracking devices, she brought it back here. She thought his blood might just have the ability to destroy the virus. As quickly as she could, she ran across the building to where Y/N was being held. Teresa knew she couldn't change what had already happened and what might happen as this evening drew on. What she could try to do was the right thing, the one that would keep people alive. In this case, it was Newt. She had to push aside the want to simply prove here and now that Thomas' blood had the ability to act as a cure. Right now, she had to focus on putting aside the goal she'd been chasing and choose to save a former friend.
"Teresa?" Y/N sat up stiffly as the dark haired girl forcer her way into Y/N's small room. "What are you doing?"
"Getting you out. I need you to do something." She struggled with the restraints on Y/N's hands and eventually broke them away. "Thomas and Newt are here. They're looking for Minho. But Newt is sick. I might have a cure but I need you to bring them to me in the lab."
Y/N was taken aback by Teresa's straightforwardness. "They're here?"
"Yeah," She got Y/N to her feet. "Third floor. Just get them back to me, okay? Newt doesn't have long."
"Okay," Y/N took in a deep breath, trying to clear her vision. "I'll find them."
"Yeah, now go!" She shooed Y/N out of the room. Y/N had been a runner. While yes, she was sick, frail, and lacking all necessary ability to run, Teresa knew she could do it. Y/N would force through it and she knew it.
Gally paced back and fourth outside anxiously. Where were they? Thomas and Newt were supposed to have Minho and Y/N by now, be back out of the building and meeting him here. Any communication he had with them was cut off. They either had found another escape route or were caught right up in WICKED's fingers.
After failing to get his attention, Brenda snuck off of the bus and ran for Gally across the garage. She noticed his tense frame, how he was fully focused staring at the floor while he stomped back and fourth. Sooner or later, he was going to wear a hole in the concrete. She knew in approaching she had to be careful. If she caught him off guard, she'd be in serious danger.
"Gally?" She asked quietly. The boys head rose, still covered by the face shield, but she knew he was paying attention to her now. "We have to go. Vince and Frypan have the berg ready. If we don't go now, we might not get out at all."
Gally tightened his fingers on his gun. Brenda could hear the tension. "Just a few more minutes. We can't leave without her."
"Her?" Brenda asked.
"Y/N." Gally warily spoke. "I'm not leaving without her. If they don't come back, or if they don't have her, I'm gong in alone." He spoke those words with such certainty and force Brenda wasn't going to fight him on it.
"Gally, what if—"
Gally stepped a little closer. Brenda, though she knew Gally as truly good and actually quite soft-hearted person, was still intimidated by him. When he wanted to, he could scare someone with just his sheer size and energy. Though still slightly frightened by him in a way, how Gally was able to make his position known only made her respect him more. He didn't need harsh words, a loud voice, or violence to get his point across. That alone made him a better person than most of those out there.
"My friends left me to die once." He stood firm but his voice was lower and quieter now. "I can't do the same to her."
If Gally had learned anything from being left there that day after escaping the maze, it was that no one ever deserved to feel as alone as he did. For a long time, he thought he knew was isolation from his peers felt like. It wasn't until the people he knew and trusted left him there without even checking for a pulse did he know that feeling. What he decided though was that for so long as he could prevent it, no one would feel the way he did. He also knew it wasn't worth resenting the world or the people who had left him there. He forgave them long ago. He just wished someday, they'd do the same for him.
Guards suddenly swelled the garage. "You're going to have to get her out another way," Brenda grabbed Gally's arm and started dragging him along with her back to the bus. "You're no help to her if you're caught."
Gally wanted to fight. He truly did. But Brenda was right. If he got caught now, there was no way he could get Y/N out at a later point. If he ran into the building right now, in the opposite direction of all the other guards, he was done for. So, he went with Brenda.
Y/N had no clue where she was going. She'd only seen a couple of the floors of this building in the past six months. But, a stairwell wouldn't lie. She dropped down a couple levels and sure enough, there was a door labelled 'level 3'. She burst out and started running. If she could move fast enough, she'd find them sooner than later.
It wasn't as hard as she thought it'd be. Minho's violent hollers came around a corner and guns fired. She figured that had to be where her friends were. The girl watched as a WICKED guard raced for the same hallway as she was. Instinctively, she picked up her pace. The guard didn't seem to pay her any attention, so she rammed straight into them just as they crossed into the opening of the hall with their gun raised. She slammed them straight into the floor, disarmed them, and made sure they wouldn't be getting up. Y/N never thought she'd be able to fire on a person, but the taser guns didn't scare her in the same way a gun made to kill did.
The hallway was strangely silent. She looked up to find her friends standing there in an embrace, guards laid out on the floor around them. For the first time in a long time, she smiled.
"Hey, guys! Time to go!" She shout.
The three broke apart and looked to her with pure shock. "Y/N?!" Newt ran for the girl, quickly followed by Thomas and Minho.
"Yeah, now we gotta go." She ushered them to start moving.
"Where?" Thomas panicked.
"We need to go back upstairs to Teresa," Y/N said. "I know she betrayed you. I know you don't trust her. But you need to. There's a way out and a way to save Newt, okay?"
Thomas pursed his lips and looked to his friends. The idea of being able to save Newt seemed to outweigh anything else. "Okay."
The group ran down the hall the way Y/N came. To no real surprise, Janson and his men came stomping down ahead of them. Out of instinct, Thomas tried to dive into the nearest room where he'd be able to shut a door and buy themselves some time. Y/N knew that was pointless because they'd just be trapped three stories up in a building with nowhere to go. "Woah woah woah, don't go in there."
"There's nowhere else!" Thomas fought.
"There is," Y/N looked to Thomas' gun. "They've been told not to kill you. So shoot. We'll help."
Unpredictably, the group charged and began firing upon Janson and his men. They fell left and right, quite literally clearing a path through. Once passed, they could get to the doorway for the stairwell. Minho and Y/N barricaded the door as well as they could with their guns and torn clothing. Then, they all began the upwards climb.
Panting, feeling like they were all going to pass out, the group all piled into the lab Teresa had told Y/N to come back to. While Y/N quickly took Newt to the bench to have him sit down, Thomas and Minho worked at blocking the door as well as they could.
Teresa scrambled to get her things in place. "Okay, look. I'm not sure if this will work, but it's the best thing we can do for Newt. If it worked for Brenda, then—"
"It's alright," Newt almost kilter over but Y/N was there to catch him. "Thank you, Teresa."
"Don't thank me yet," She tried to take his honest thanks but she was still having a difficult time carrying the burden of what she'd already done.
Time seemed to move so slow. The group was waiting for any sudden chance in Newt to prove the serum hadn't worked and that things were only getting worse. All that happened was Newt's breathing had steadied and his eyes began to clear.
"Son of a bitch," Minho stood up and clenched his fists. "Rat face is back."
"Rat Man," Everyone but Teresa corrected. For a brief second, it almost felt like they were back in the Glade and that everything was okay. That only last until glass shattered and came flying through the room, cutting at the Gladers skin as they covered their eyes.
Everything that came newt was a blur from Y/N. She was losing her energy fast. All she knew now was that Janson had broken in, gone after Teresa believing the syringe in her hand still had anything remaining inside of it, and that Thomas had just slammed Janson through a pane of glass.
The girl kept fighting to hold Newt upright while she hazily watched Thomas fighting Janson in the hall while Minho tried to help Teresa up off of the floor.
When the building lit up with a bright orange light, shuddering, after billowing up in flames from a rocket, everyone knew it was time to leave. Minho had Teresa up on the move and went straight over to help Y/N lift Newt up. They could get out of here. It was possible. They just had to get to the roof.
As they raced down the hall, Rat Man just had to make one last mark in typical fashion. He let one last bullet loose after them. It wasn't until the group plowed through the door to the rooftop that Thomas collapsed, grabbing at his stomach and curling over. They all stopped, the building rumbling and swaying beneath them. Everyone froze when they saw the blood seeping through Thomas' fingers and their stomachs churned when he looked up with sleepy eyes.
"C'mon," Y/N tried to get a better hold on Newt's arm over his shoulder. "We need to go. I can hear the berg. We can make it."
Minho agreed with her and started making quick strides. Teresa was able to help Thomas since he was still just strong enough to walk. If they could keep going just a little longer, they could get out of here. They were almost free.
When they all stumbled out on the open rooftop, the city below them was completely engulfed in flames. They knew things had gotten out of control, but they hadn't expected this. There was going to be nothing left after tonight. The berg Y/N had heard rumbled through the smoke ahead of them and came into clear vision. With a small break of light, the bridge of the berg lowered and inside, the Gladers began to make out the faces of their friends. They were all hollering out to them, but their words were incoherent.
"They're here, Newt." Y/N squeezed his hand. "They're here. You're gonna be okay. We're getting out."
