New Roots
It seemed things, in the end, might just be okay. For all they had lost, people were rebuilding in new ways. Minho was busy running supplies from one end of camp to the other, constantly racing up the hills outside of camp to retrieve fresh water. He was finding a positive outlet. Brenda and Jorge were master planners, no doubt from all of their time surviving in the scorch. Harriet, Sonya, and Aris were working away on making sure everyone was acquainted and felt at home. Thomas and Newt, happily walked around while creating an inventory, hand in hand. It seemed those two could finally rest in each others arms knowing they were safe.
"You owe me," Y/N snickered as she slowly walked alongside Gally, gently holding onto him for balance. Though she healed fast, her time in the WICKED compound had taken more of a toll than she might like to admit. It also took longer than Gally had hoped for her to finally accept his help. Y/N was tough and had been through a lot. Just because she could make it through all of this alone didn't mean she had to, and Gally wanted to be there at her side.
"What?" Gally looked confused. "I mean, for what...specifically? I know there's lots I owe you for." He rubbed the back of his neck a little awkwardly.
"No, you don't owe me anything in that kind of way." Y/N laughed. "Newt and Thomas. I was right." She smiled up at him smugly.
"Yeah. You called it back in the Glade." Gally let out a deep sigh and shrugged slightly. "I lost the bet."
"You sure did." The girl moved her eyes away from Thomas and Newt and back to Gally walking at her side. "Remember the day we made that bet?"
Gally felt like his insides shrivelled up. He wanted to vomit. Thinking back to the Glade, to Chuck, all of their other friends who had since left their lives was hard enough. Thinking back to the Glade when he felt so strongly for Y/N but couldn't say anything. All the times when he said things he still regret to this day. But he also remembered all of the good moments that still made his heart wrench. Times he'd held her close and times they'd both made promises they knew they couldn't keep. For all the nights he'd laid awake, his hopes and dreams solely involving her. It didn't really matter to Gally what the world looked like as long as she was there.
His biggest fear had never truly been leaving the Glade. His fear was a world without her. A world where he'd never be good enough of a person for her. A lonely, solitary world where the only person he felt he could place any form of trust and vulnerability in wasn't there.
Gally felt his body shudder as he sat down with Y/N against a log by an unoccupied fire. A breeze had blown in off the water and Gally saw it best he get them somewhere a little warmer. "I remember that day a little too well." He admit.
Y/N let herself relax and she melt into Gally's side. For a moment he froze. Then, something in his mind seemed to shift and he felt himself succumb to a complete feeling of contentment as he reached his arm around her.
"Where did that bet come from anyways?" Y/N asked.
Gally fought his own thoughts. He cringed. In all honesty though, at this point, if Y/N was still with him, anything he could say now wouldn't deter her. "I guess that was my way of testing the waters. To see where your head was at."
"What do you mean?" She questioned.
Gally rubbed the girls hands ever so slightly in an attempt to warm them up. "I guess when I asked you who you thought would end up together out of everyone in the Glade..." He paused, the sudden feeling of a burning nose and tears welling in his eyes overwhelming him. "I guess...I was hoping you were going to say us."
Y/N didn't respond for a moment. "I was hoping I would too. But I couldn't make myself do it." She lowered her head a little. "I'm sorry."
"I was scared as well." Gally bit the inside of his cheek. "Besides, who knows what WICKED would have done if we had said something. It was probably for the best."
"Yeah, you're right." Y/N agreed. "I'm sorry if it hurt, though."
Gally pulled his knees upwards, brining Y/N in closer to himself. He leaned forward and held her as he kissed the top of her head. "It hurt. But I think deep down, we both knew the truth. We knew it wasn't the right time."
"And now is?" She asked.
Gally stifled a laugh. "I really hope so."
