13. Into The Wild

Klaus watched as Caroline and Brayden placed a white sheet over Kol's dead body, Brayden deciding to bury Kol, everyone else having left to get the cure.

Suddenly, Tyler entered the Gilbert's house, "Morning, sunshine" he greeted a trapped Klaus, "You look pathetic".

"Only until Bonnie's spell locking me in here wears off" Klaus reminded, "Then I'll look different, angrier, perhaps, or I won't look like anything because I'll have gouged your eyeballs from their sockets".

"My friends will be back with the cure by then, so I can shove it down your throat and make you mortal" Tyler stated.

"I'm an Original" Klaus reminded, "What makes you think my entire vampire bloodline won't be cured along with me? I.e. you".

"You know what I think?" Tyler asked, "I think that's impossible, I think the moment you stop being a vampire our whole blood connection to you is broken and your sire line ceases to exist, so whatever happens to you happens only to you, which means I can kill your ass, and no one else has to die, although I am still debating just how to do it".

Klaus speeded over to where Tyler was, "I recommend drowning" he taunted, "There's nothing quite like the feeling of someone fighting for something as basic as human breath, and let me tell you, your mother was a fighter".

Brayden let out an annoyed sighed, he then turned to his girlfriend, "I'll be back soon, you don't get caught in these two's crossfire" he warned.

"Take your time, I'll be fine" Caroline assured, knowing Brayden will need time to say goodbye to Kol.

Brayden gave Caroline a small nod, he then picked Kol's wrapped up body and threw it over his shoulder and walked out the door.

"What is this place?" a confused Stefan asked Shane, as he led them to an abandoned campsite in the island of Nova Scotia.

Stefan, Fae, Damon, Kaitlynn and Rebekah had to enlist the help of Shane to help them get to the cure as Bonnie, Elena and Jeremy had the hunter's mark but they had nothing and the professor eagerly agreed to take them to the cure, wanting to rise Silas himself.

"According to island lore, a group of college kids came here for spring break" Shane informed, "A few weeks later they were all found dead, completely drained of blood".

"Well, tragic for them, brilliant for us, who sleeps where?" Rebekah asked.

"Well, that's lovely" Damon taunted, ignoring Rebekah, "Our three enemies are lurking somewhere in this island and we're just gonna camp".

"We're safer here than we are hiking in the dark" Shane reasoned.

Stefan sighed, but nonetheless, he grabbed Fae's hand and the vampire and heretic went to find a comfortable tent to sleep in, Rebekah followed them, while Damon and Kaitlynn stayed behind with Shane.

"Let's just keep going, you know? Get the cure, get in, get out" Damon told Shane, "Where is it?".

"How stupid do you think I am?" Shane asked.

"Stupid enough to raise an immortal witch, so I'd say incredibly" Damon retorted.

"You know, I'm shocked you want the cure" Shane said, "Considering you've got the most to lose once Kaitlynn's human".

Kaitlynn glared at Shane for trying to create doubts in Damon's mind regarding the future of their relationship.

Once the professor had walked away, Kaitlynn looked at Damon, "Ignore Shane, he doesn't know us" she said, "He doesn't know what he's talking about".

"Yeah well, we'll find out tomorrow" Damon simply said.

"Damon, me taking this cure doesn't mean that I'm going to all of a sudden stop loving you" Kaitlynn argued, "Human or vampire, I love you, why aren't you getting that?".

"We don't know that Kaitlynn" Damon argued back, "Who knows, maybe human Kaitlynn might not love me like vampire Kaitlynn does".

"Human or vampire, I am still me" Kaitlynn snapped, "I admit, me taking this cure is going to limit our time together, but I don't care, because it would just give us an opportunity to cherish our time".

Damon looked at Kaitlynn, a curious look on his face, "This whole time, you are so determined to take the care, but not once have you asked me to take it with you, why?" he asked, "Don't you want me to turn human with you?".

Kaitlynn gave Damon a sad smile, "More than anything in this world" she admitted, "But I can't ask you to take the cure with you".

"Why not?" a confused Damon asked.

"Because that won't be fair on you" Kaitlynn replied, "You love being a vampire, just like I love being human, I can't ask you to take the cure for me and turn human, that's not fair, same way--".

"I can't ask you to stay a vampire" Damon finished.

Kaitlynn stepped forward and cupped Damon's face in her hands, "I know it took us a long time to become what we are and I know most of it is my fault, and I know once I turn human our time is going to be extremely limited, but I'm not going to let time stop us from living our lives the way we want it, it's not going to stop me from loving you, from wanting to being with you, till my last breath, and when I do die, I promise you that I will be waiting for you on the other side, to live our afterlife together, I promise".

Damon stared at Kaitlynn for a moment, he then put his hands on either side of her face and took her lips into his, her words touching his heart.

"Why did you come here?" a confused Caroline asked Tyler.

"To gloat" Tyler replied honestly.

Caroline sighed, "Go home, don't stoop to his level".

"He destroyed my life" Tyler reminded, "I plan on being present for every second of his misery until I can kill him myself".

"Your mother is dead, so is my brother" Klaus told Tyler, "We're even", Klaus looked at Caroline, "Call Fae, she can easily get rid of Bonnie's spell".

"I will never, ever help you" Caroline said, glaring at Klaus.

"How quickly you forget the part where I saved Tyler from the misery of being a werewolf" Klaus argued, "Or the night your mother invited me into her home to save the life of her precious daughter".

"God, how delusional are you?" Caroline asked, glaring at Klaus, "You kill Tyler's mother, and let's not forget we're standing in a house where Jenna used to live, or did you think that your charm would make us forget how you killed her too? Or the fact that you killed me, caused me and Brayden to be apart for three months, and then when we finally reunited you forced him to turn his humanity off, you know what? No, I am not going to engage in this, you are not even worth the calories I burn talking to you".

Klaus glared at Caroline, and before anyone could react, he grabbed the nearby wooden lamp and stuck it into Caroline's stomach.

"No!" Tyler yelled, but it was too late as Klaus had pulled Caroline towards her and bit into her neck.

As Caroline fell to the floor, a smug Klaus turned to face Tyler, "Now, that was definitely worth the calories".

"I can't believe I forgot to pack s'mores" Fae complained, sitting next Stefan, infront of the bonfire, she looked at her boyfriend and saw him staring at Silas's tombstone, "Why are you having a staring competition with that thing?".

"Assuming Bonnie, Elena and Jeremy don't get to it first, we're a day away from finding the cure, I'm not letting it out of my sight" Stefan stated.

Suddenly the two vampires heard a animal cry in the distance, immediately causing Fae to latch on to Stefan, in her fear not realising that she had accidentally started to siphon from him.

"Oh my god Stefan, we're being haunted" Fae cried.

"Fae, I love you but if you don't want me to desiccate then you need to stop siphoning me" an amused Stefan said.

Fae looked at Stefan, then at her hand which was grabbing on to his arm, and realised Stefan was right, without even realising it she was siphoning from Stefan, "Oh my god, I am so sorry" she said, quickly removing her hand, "I didn't even realise I was doing that".

"You know, I've noticed you do that when your either really angry or really afraid" Stefan said.

"Yeah, those are the two most times witches tend to lose control of their magic, in my case I lose control of my siphoning" Fae said, she then stared at Stefan, "What's going to happen next?".

Stefan looked at Fae in confusion, "What do you mean?".

"I mean, when we both take the cure, what happens after that?" Fae asked curiously.

"I don't know" Stefan admitted, "But isn't that the fun of it? Figuring out things as we go".

"But that's also terrifying" Fae retorted, "What happens if we both hate being humans?".

Stefan sighed, "Look Fae, I think there's definitely going to be a moment in our human lives that we're going to wonder what would have happened if we stayed vampires, which is why neither of us are going to take the cure until we both are sure that we want to be human".

"What happens if one of us wants to become human and the other doesn't?" Fae asked.

Stefan shrugged, "No matter what, our love won't change".

Fae held her hand our, "Promise?".

Stefan smiled, "Promise" he said, placing her hand into the heretic's.

After finishing burying Kol's body near the Salvatore crypt, Brayden threw the shovel on to the ground, he then knelt down and looked at Kol's grave.

"God Kol, this isn't how your story was supposed to end" Brayden whispered, tears in his eyes, "You were supposed to be stop Silas and then you were supposed to go and explore the world and find your true love, this isn't how you were supposed to go, I promise you, I will find a way to bring you back, I will, the last time we saw each other, that wasn't really the last, the story of the psychotic Mikaelson can't end like this, it won't end like this, you'll come back, one way or another".

Brayden then stood up and stared at Kol's grave for a moment, when suddenly his phone started ringing, taking it out of his pocket he realised Tyler was calling him.

"Yeah?" Brayden answered his phone.

"Brayden, you need to get back here, now" a panicked Tyler demanded.

"Tyler, what's wrong?" a suddenly worried Brayden asked.

"It's Caroline" Tyler informed, "Klaus bit her".

"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god" a panicked Caroline cried, as Tyler helped her on to the couch.

"Hey, hey, look at me, look at me" Tyler told Caroline, while sitting infront of her, "I can fix this".

"How?!" Caroline asked, "The only thing that can heal me is his blood, oh my god, oh my god, call Brayden, Tyler please call Brayden, I need him".

"I've called him, he's on his way" Tyler assured, he then stood up and faced Klaus, "She'll die if you don't heal her".

"Okay" Klaus said, biting into his wrist, "Beg me to save her life".

"Is this what you want?" Tyler asked, "To remind me that I'm powerless against you? Fine, you win, I'm nothing, now save her, please".

"I'm sorry mate, I didn't quite catch that" Klaus taunted.

"Please" Tyler pleaded.

"Please?" Klaus asked.

"Please save her life" Tyler begged.

"See, now I think you're just telling me what I wanna hear" Klaus said, "I mean, you did call me pathetic earlier, and wouldn't it be more pathetic of me to help now knowing that hours ago you announced your plan to kill me in a manner in which you're still debating because you want it to have a certain amount of flair? I'm just asking".

"I'll be your slave again" Tyler offered, "I'll do whatever you want, just help her".

"No" Klaus said, just as Brayden entered the house, having heard Klaus refuse to help Caroline.

"Caroline" Brayden said, ignoring both Tyler and Klaus and rushing over to his girlfriend, reaching her, he sat infront of her and removed her hair from her shoulder, he winced seeing the bite, it looked bad, "Dammit, I told you not you get caught in their crossfire".

"Get me out of here" Caroline told Brayden, "I can't even look at him".

Brayden looked at Klaus then at Caroline, he knew only Klaus could heal her, but looking at Caroline's state, he also knew keeping her infront of Klaus wasn't a good idea, so Brayden stood up from the couch and after picking Caroline in his arms, he proceeded to take her out of the house and away from Klaus, while thinking of how to get the hybrid to heal her.

Brayden had laid Caroline in the Gilbert's guestroom.

"It's getting worse" Caroline cried, "I'm sorry".

"Don't apologise, none of this is your fault" Brayden assured, "You were just caught in the crossfire, I should be the one apologising, I shouldn't have left you alone here".

"None of this is your fault" Caroline assured.

Brayden sighed, he put his hand on the back of Caroline's neck and slowly helped her sit up, he then attached his forehead to hers, "I'm not going to lose you Caroline, not you" he said, "I need you to tell me that you trust me enough to know that I won't let anything happen to you".

Caroline placed her hand on Brayden's cheek, "There's no one else I trust more than you to keep me alive" she whispered.

Brayden removed Caroline's hair from her face, "My first priority will always be to make sure you are alive and well and with me" he promised, placing a kiss on Caroline's forehead.

Brayden carried Caroline downstairs, where both Tyler and Klaus were still present, Brayden carefully placed Caroline on the floor, after placing a kiss on her forehead, he stood up and faced the hybrid.

"You wanna know why I hate you so much?" Brayden asked the hybrid, "It's not because you tried to ruin my life, it's because ever since that Mikaelson ball, I realised that you don't just fancy Caroline, you're in love with her", Klaus looked at Brayden, shock evident in his face, "Don't look so shocked, I know, I've known since day one, I just refused to acknowledge it not wanting to believe that there was someone else out there who loves Caroline, I always believed, hell I still do believe that I only have the right to love her, because it's supposed to be me and her forever, but I know you believe the opposite, you think its you and her, and you know what that's fine, I watched you once stake her through the heart and the feeling I got seeing that, was something I never want to feel again, now it's your turn Klaus, to watch the girl we both love die, her fate now rests in your hands, if your choose your ego over love, then you get to watch her die, because I can't do that, not again, not this time".

Brayden looked at Caroline, who gave him a small nod, Brayden then looked at Tyler and with his head gestured for him to follow.

Once Brayden and Tyler had left the house, Klaus took small steps towards the Forbes vampire, "Nothing personal love, but if I cure you, that means victory for Tyler" he said, kneeling down, as Caroline started taking shaky breaths, "Don't worry, it won't be long now".

"If you don't feed me your blood, I'll die" Caroline whimpered, now placed on the couch thanks to Klaus.

"Then you'll die, and Tyler will have learned his lesson the hard way, by losing not only his mother but also his good friend" Klaus simply said.

"How could you do this to him?" Caroline asked, "To his mom? To me?".

"I'm a thousand years old" Klaus replied, "Call it boredom".

"I don't believe you" Caroline stated.

"Fine" Klaus said, "Then maybe it's because I'm pure evil and I can't help myself".

"No, it's because you were hurt" Caroline retorted, making Klaus look at her, "Which means that there is a part of you that is human".

Klaus sat on the table infront of Caroline, "How could you possibly think that?" he asked curiously.

"Because I've seen it" Caroline replied, "Because I've caught myself wishing that I could forget all the horrible things that you've done".

"Even if you do forget, you will never love someone as much as you love him, will you?" Klaus asked.

"Brayden is someone I can never stop loving, I will love him till my last breath on this earth" Caroline admitted, "But I also know that you're in love with me, and anybody capable of love is capable of being saved".

"You're hallucinating" Klaus whispered, tears welling in his eyes.

"I guess I'll never know" Caroline whispered, her eyes closing shut.

"Caroline?" a concerned Klaus called out, but he got no reply in return, "Caroline?", after a moment Klaus lifted Caroline's head up and sat behind her, he then bit into his wrist and fed Caroline his blood, finally healing her werewolf bite.

Outside, Brayden sat on the swing in the Gilbert's porch, using his super hearing to know what was happening inside the house and as soon as he heard Caroline drink Klaus's blood, he finally released the breath he didn't even know he was holding.
