01. I Know What You Did Last Summer

Caroline stood in her living room, surrounded by boxes, she was packing her things before both her and Kaitlynn were off to college.

Currently, Caroline was going through the photos she was going to take with her to college, a sad smile formed on her facing after seeing a photo of her, Kaitlynn and Fae on graduation day, neither Caroline or Kaitlynn knew where Fae went, she just left all of them, leaving behind heartbroken Caroline and Kaitlynn, and a furious Stefan behind, who left Mystic Falls, the town was plagued with too many of Fae's memories and he couldn't handle it anymore.

A sad smile formed on Caroline's face as she put the photo in the box, hoping and praying that somehow Fae will come back and fulfill her promise of going through college with her two best friends.

Caroline's eyes then landed on the next photo, and immediately her expressions hardened, it was a picture of her and Brayden standing together at their first founders event together, for a moment Caroline just stared at the photo, the next moment she ripped the picture in half and let it fall to the ground.

Brayden, who had spent the entire summer drowning and coming back to life, once again opened his eyes and immediately started struggling for breath once again, he banged on the safe door again and again but no matter how hard he punched the door, he failed to come out of the safe.

Caroline and Kaitlynn walked Whitmore campus together, Kaitlynn once again trying to convince Caroline to look for Brayden.

"Kaitlynn, seriously, stop mentioning him" an annoyed Caroline snapped.

Kaitlynn sighed, "Caroline, you and me both know Brayden, we know how much he loves you, him packing his stuff and leaving like this makes no sense".

"Don't forget the break up message" Caroline added, an angry expression on her face.

"Exactly!" Kaitlynn said, "Brayden will never do that, my gut is telling me he didn't leave willingly, something is wrong with him".

"Careful Kaitlynn, wouldn't want your boyfriend to misunderstand your concern for his runaway brother" Caroline taunted.

Kaitlynn shook her head, ever since Brayden and Fae had left, she has been trying to get everyone to go on a search for them, she refused to believe Fae will leave Stefan after thirty years apart, and there was a really bad feeling in her gut about Brayden, everything in her told her that something was seriously wrong with the middle Salvatore but no one listened to her, everyone was too angry or too hurt to listen.

Stefan and Caroline were heartbroken because of Fae and Brayden, but more then being heartbroken, the two vampires were angry, they believed that while they loved their respective others with everything they had, their respective others never loved them enough.

Damon on the other was a whole different case, he wasn't angry, but he refused to say Brayden's name, he doesn't know why Fae left but he was willingly to help Kaitlynn find her, but when it came to Brayden, he refused to say even his name, he wasn't angry but he felt betrayed because Brayden left the one person who had spent centuries with him.

After walking a bit more, Caroline and Kaitlynn stopped and looked at their surrounding.

A smile formed on Kaitlynn's face, "Can you believe it, after everything, we finally made it to college, Caroline".

"We actually made it, we're here" an ecstatic Caroline said.

"I just wish she was here as well" Kaitlynn whispered.

"Me too" Caroline whispered, not angry with Fae the way she was with Brayden,

Fae's ghost stood next to the two girls, her eyes full of tears, "I'm right here you guys".

"Is this a panini press?" an amused Kaitlynn asked, as her and Caroline unpacked their stuff in their dorm room.

"Small appliance by the fridge" Caroline stated.

"Okay, that's the last one" Liz said, bringing in the last box full of Caroline's stuff, after putting the box down, she looked at her daughter, "All right, give me a goodbye hug before I change my mind and drag you home with me", Caroline stepped forward and gladly pulled her emotional mom into a tight hug, "Oh, you can call as much as you want, you know?".

Caroline chuckled, "Mom, we'll be fine" she assured.

After breaking the hug with Caroline, an emotional Liz turned to Kaitlynn, "Come here".

"Me?" a shocked Kaitlynn asked, not expecting Liz to hug her.

"Yes, you" Caroline said, pushing her best friend towards her mother.

Before Kaitlynn could react, Liz pulled her into a tight hug, shocking the vampire, but once her shock was gone, she gladly hugged Liz, a sense of warmth filling her heart.

After Liz and Kaitlynn broke their hug, Liz looked between the two girls with tears in her eyes, not wanting to leave either of them here.

"Okay go, before I change my mind and make you stay" Caroline said, her mom's emotional state making her emotional as well.

"I'm going, I'm going, I love you" Liz said, before walking out the girls dorm room, closing the door behind her, "Bye, girls".

After Liz left, Kaitlynn and Caroline turned to each other, huge smiles on their faces, "So roomie, what's the first thing on the agenda?".

"Well, roomie, we need to drink to something" Caroline said, walking over to her suitcase that was full of blood bags, opening it, she took two bloodbags out and threw one towards Kaitlynn, who easily caught it.

"Alright, let's drink to us, in our new college, being semi functional vampires" Kaitlynn toasted.

"To the next chapter in our lives" Caroline toasted.

Kaitlynn and Caroline cheered with their blood bags, however before they could take a sip, a knock on the door caught their attention, using their vampire speed the two girls quickly threw their blood bags back into the suitcase and Caroline shut it up, just as the door opened and in came a girl neither of the two vampires knew.

"Hi".

"Uh, who are you?" a confused Caroline asked.

"Oh, I'm Megan, your roommate".

Both Kaitlynn and Caroline looked at each other in shock, the two girls realising Megan had taken Fae's spot in their dorm, the spot the two girls had been saving hoping somehow, someway, the Bennett heretic would come back, but now even if she came back she couldn't stay with them because of Megan.

After Kaitlynn managed to convince a very reluctant Caroline to accept Megan as there roommate and not compel her away, the three girls walked out their dorm room to explore the Whitmore campus.

"So your current boyfriend Damien--".

"Damon" Kaitlynn corrected Megan.

"Is your ex's brother, who is now Caroline's boyfriend" Megan continued.

"Brayden" Kaitlynn informed.

"And he's my ex-boyfriend now" an annoyed Caroline said, hating all this Brayden talk, she knew Kaitlynn was doing this on purpose, she was constantly talking about Brayden, trying to remind Caroline of him and hoping she will finally agree to look for him, but Caroline wasn't falling for it, she refused to go look for someone who never loved her like she loved him.

"And you and Brayden are friends, but three months ago he left Caroline without saying goodbye?" Megan asked.

"Yeap" Kaitlynn confirmed, "But I think we should go look for him".

"No way" Both Megan and Caroline said at the same time.

"We're not looking for him Kaitlynn, and stop bringing him up again and again" Caroline snapped, glaring at her best friend, who in turn just let out a defeated sigh, the Forbes vampire then turned to Megan, "Changing the subject, let's talk roommate ground rules, privacy is very important to me".

"Same here" Megan said.

"I have low blood sugar, my diet's finicky, so keep your paws off my stuff" Caroline warned.

"We'll split up the shelves" Megan suggested.

"And if I suddenly get up to leave or disappear for a while don't follow me or look for me" Caroline said, making Kaitlynn face palm, Caroline was being too obvious.

"Okay, sounds good" an amused Megan said.

"Great, that means we'll have no problems" Kaitlynn said, giving Megan a smile.

"Excuse me, ladies" a young man greeted, walking over to the three freshmen, a flyer in his hand, "Party at the Whitmore house tonight".

Caroline took the flyer from the guy and looked at it while Kaitlynn frowned seeing the look the flyer guy was giving Caroline, if Brayden was here, he would have been six feet underground, shaking her head from the thoughts of Brayden, Kaitlynn looked at the flyer guy, "We'll be there" she said.

"I hope so" the flyer guy said, giving Caroline one last glance before walking away from the trio.

Brayden gasped and once again opened his eyes, only to realise he was still drowning in the safe Silas had locked him in, immediately he started banging on the door.

"Caroline" Brayden called out, desperately trying to open the door and get to his soulmate, but he failed and once again fell into darkness, only this time, the darkness didn't last long, instead he saw himself in his room, staring out the window.

"Wish I could say it gets better" Damon said, walking over to his brother, a glass of bourbon in his hand.

Brayden took the bourbon from his twin, "I'm not going to do it" he said, before turning back to gaze out the window.

"Why?" a confused Damon asked, "So you can keep dying, and coming back to life? You felt nothing but sheer agony for three months, you hallucinate conversations with me and Stefan to have something to do, just turn off that pesky humanity switch".

"Turning off the humanity switch won't talk my pain away, Damon" Brayden whispered.

"Yeah, but it'll turn off your misery" Damon retorted, "Your fear, your hopelessness".

"And what after that, huh?" Brayden asked, turning around and glaring at his brother, "What happens when you and Caroline get me out of here? What good will it to when the world comes across the ruthless Brayden Salvatore? Someone even worse then the ripper of Monterey, how is that better then this?".

Kaitlynn stood infront of the floor length mirror in her and Caroline's shared dorm room, looking at her outfit, when she suddenly felt a weird type of pain in her chest, immediately causing her hand to go up to her chest, she didn't know how and why, but for some reason Kaitlynn knew that this pain was somehow related to Brayden, he was in trouble but no one seemed to believe her.

"Did you notice how Megan's juicer takes up all the small-appliance space?" Caroline asked, bringing Kaitlynn out of her thoughts and back into the real world, "She has an entire drawer dedicated to organic linen".

"Weren't you the one who gave Megan a lecture on privacy?" an amused Kaitlynn asked.

"Maybe if she didn't take such long showers I wouldn't have time to go through her stuff" Caroline defended, "How are you okay with a third roommate?".

"Because I thought the whole point of college was to make new friends" Kaitlynn replied.

"But we also need personal space" Caroline argued, "I mean, what if we suddenly get a craving and I want to eat her? Or our blood bags go bad because we can't store them in the mini fridge?", Caroline opened the mini fridge and took out one of Megan's bottles, "And what the hell is protein water?".

"How the hell am I supposed to know?" Kaitlynn said.

"You know what?" Caroline said, opening the bottle of water up, "Maybe if I drink it all, she'll want to move out".

"That's really petty" Kaitlynn commented, watching  her best friend drink the water.

Suddenly Caroline spat the water out and fell to the while violently coughing.

"Caroline!" a concerned Kaitlynn yelled, rushing over to the Forbes vampire and kneeling by her, "You okay?".

"Vervain" Caroline breathed out.

"What's going on?" a confused Megan asked, finally stepping out of the bathroom, her eyes then landed on Caroline who was still on the floor, "Are you okay?".

"She's okay" Kaitlynn assured, helping Caroline stand up.

"What happened?" a curious Megan asked.

"Water just went down the wrong pipe" Caroline replied, handing Megan her water, "I'm okay really, I shouldn't have touched your stuff, I'm really sorry".

"It's fine" Megan assured, "It just sounded like someone was dying out here, well, I'm glad you're okay".

Once Megan had walked back into the bathroom, a panicked Caroline turned to Kaitlynn, "She knows who we are, she drinks vervain water".

"Just because she drinks vervain water, doesn't mean she knows that we are vampires" Kaitlynn reasoned.

"Seriously?" an annoyed Caroline asked, "We share a bathroom with this girl, what if she's a hunter and she stakes us in the shower? Or she steals our daylight rings while we're asleep and then we burst into flames when the sun comes up?".

"Caroline, stop panicking" Kaitlynn said, "If this girl was a hunter and she knew about us, we would be dead by now".

"I think we should lock her up, you know let the vervain get out of her system and then we compel her to forget about us" Caroline suggested.

"Kidnapping our roommate is a horrible idea, Caroline" Kaitlynn stated, "You want to convince her that we're normal and not vampires? Then you've got to act normal, do things that normal human freshmen would do".

"Such as?" Caroline asked.

Suddenly a smile formed on Kaitlynn's face, "Such as, go to our first ever college party".

Once it was nighttime, Caroline and Kaitlynn made there way over to Whitmore house where the party was being thrown.

"Hey, I remember you".

Caroline and Kaitlynn turned around and came face to face with the guy who handed them the flyer about this party.

"You're the guy who gave us the flyer" Kaitlynn remembered.

"Jesse".

"I'm Kaitlynn and this is Caroline" Kaitlynn introduced.

"Nice to meet you" Jesse told Caroline.

"Hi" Caroline greeted, before turning around and walking away.

After giving Jesse an apologetic look, Kaitlynn quickly walked over to Caroline, "You refuse to go look for Brayden but at the same time you can't be nice to other guys?".

Caroline glared at Kaitlynn, "Did you tell Damon you were having dreams about Brayden?" she asked, .

"No, but I told you, and you didn't take it well so I'm guessing Damon isn't going to take it well either" Kaitlynn retorted.

"I didn't take it well because I hate Brayden Salvatore and want nothing to do with him or his stupid dreams" Caroline said, as the girls arrived at the Whitmore house threshold, as the two vampires tried to enter the house, they quickly realised they couldn't because of the barrier blocking them, "What the hell?".

"We have to be invited in" Kaitlynn realised.

"Hey, I was wondering if you guys were gonna make it" Megan said, walking over to the duo.

"You guys going in, or--?" Jesse asked from behind the girls.

"Uh, you should ahead first" Kaitlynn said, stepping to the side and letting Jesse through.

"Why are you guys just standing there?" a confused Megan asked.

Kaitlynn opened her mouth to say a excuse, but nothing came out, "Caroline will let you know why we're standing here" she instead said, immediately causing the Forbes girl to glare at her for putting her on the spot.

"Waiting for someone" Caroline lied.

"They're extremely late" Kaitlynn added.

"So".

"Yeah".

"Right, well, I'm gonna go hang" Megan said.

"Okay" Caroline said, watching Megan walk away, she then turned to Kaitlynn, "Like I said, she knows".

Caroline and Kaitlynn stood to the side of Whitmore house, with Kaitlynn on her phone, leaving a voicemail for Megan.

"Hey Megan, it's Kaitlynn, I just wanted to let you know that me and Caroline left the party early, it just wasn't our scene, see you at the dorm, have fun, bye".

Once Kaitlynn hanged up the phone, Caroline let out a frustrated sigh, "Okay, it's settled, when she leaves, we grab her".

"Or we just tell her that one of us got sick, like really really sick" Kaitlynn suggested.

"Kaitlynn, she saw us stuck at the threshold, we might as well have flashed her our fangs" Caroline said.

"Caroline, our luck can not be this bad that out of the thousands of freshmen that come to Whitmore college, we randomly get paired with a girl who knows about the supernatural world" Kaitlynn stated.

"Maybe it wasn't random" Caroline retorted, just as Kaitlynn's phone started ringing.

"It's Megan" Kaitlynn informed Caroline, before answering her phone, "Hey, Megan".

"Kaitlynn, you have to help me" a panicked Megan said from the other side of the phone, a worried Kaitlynn quickly put her phone speaker so Caroline can easily hear, "He's chasing me".

"Who's chasing you?" a confused and worried Kaitlynn asked.

"Help me!" Megan yelled, "Oh my god!".

Caroline and Kaitlynn looked to the side of the Whitmore building as they heard the sound of the windows rattling.

"Megan, we can't come inside right now, you need to come out, now!" Kaitlynn said.

"Kaitlynn, please help me!" Megan cried.

"Dammit Megan, where are you?" Kaitlynn asked.

Caroline quickly took the phone from Kaitlynn's hand, "Megan? Can you hear me? Just get outside and we can help you".

Suddenly the two vampires heard Megan scream and then a body was thrown from the building, right behind the two girls, the two vampires gasped and turned around and were shocked realising it was Megan's body.

"Oh my god" Kaitlynn whispered, she quickly kneeled down and removed Megan's hair from her neck, revealing the cause of her death.

"Who did this to her?" a shocked Caroline asked.

Kaitlynn looked at Caroline, "Caroline, I don't think we're the only vampires here, there's another vampire here".

"This is not how I expected our first college to turn out" Kaitlynn admitted, as her and Caroline stood to the side, watching the campus police take care of Megan's body.

"We don't know what she knew or who she told" Caroline pointed out, "We should get out of here".

Kaitlynn nodded her head in agreement, when suddenly her eyes went wide, she remembered something, "Caroline, I left Megan a voicemail".

"Don't worry, I took her phone" Caroline informed.

"You sneaky little bitch" Kaitlynn chuckled.

Before Caroline could say anything, the head of campus security walked over to the two friends, "Hey, girls, I'm Diane Freeman, head of campus security, are you okay?".

Caroline nodded her head, "We're fine" Kaitlynn said.

"I understand Megan was your roommate" Diane said, "I'm so sorry you had to find her like this".

"Do they know what happened?" a curious Caroline asked.

"We found a note, apparently, she was struggling with severe depression" Diane informed the girls.

"A note?" a confused Kaitlynn asked, "What kind of note?".

"Your roommate took her own life" Dianne informed.

"You think this was a suicide?" a shocked Caroline asked.

"We're convinced it was a suicide" Dianne replied, "But we can't seem to find her cell phone, have you seen it?".

Immediately the two vampires shook their heads, "No" Caroline said.

"Okay" Diane said, "If it turns up, let us know?".

"Of course" Kaitlynn said, Diane gave the two girls one last smile before finally walking away from them, Kaitlynn then turned to Caroline, "What the hell is up with this college?".

Back at the Boarding house, Damon had found out that Silas was back from Jeremy, whose hunter side awoke once Silas had touched him, Damon then rushed to the boarding house where Silas attempted to kill Katherine who was hiding out in the boarding house but she managed to escape and now Silas was revealing to Damon that he wasn't wearing Stefan's face, this was his actual face.

"If I hear the word doppelganger one more time, I think I'm gonna actually have to learn how to spell it" an annoyed Damon said.

"You say you don't believe me, and yet your mind is spinning at the possibility" Silas said.

"A, get out of my head" Damon snapped, "B, I think I'd know if my littlest brother had an evil twin".

"Oh, we're not twins" Silas said, "See, when I became truly immortal, natural retaliated by creating a version of me that was killable, it's called a shadow self".

"Well, whatever you are, your plan didn't work, cure's gone" Damon stated, "Now, what do you want with Katherine?".

"I could tell you, but wouldn't it be so much more fun if it were a surprise?" Silas taunted.

"You're not getting her" Damon said.

"I thought you and Brayden were inseparable" Silas suddenly said, standing up from the chair, "From what I heard was that you two brothers would die for each other, wasn't he the one relationship you feared of ruining your entire life? Yet you believed that he would leave town for three months without so much of a phone call to you or his soulmate?".

Damon looked at Silas in shock, "What the hell are you saying Silas?" he asked, "Do you know where my brother is?".

"He's suffering Damon, like I suffered" Silas informed, "So call the hunter, bring me Katherine and then I will tell you where your twin brother is".

Kaitlynn and Caroline made their way back to their dorm, on their way, Caroline was listening to the voicemail Kaitlynn sent Megan on Megan's phone.

"Hey Megan, it's Kaitlynn, I just wanted to let you know--".

"Delete" Caroline said, deleting Kaitlynn's voicemail off of Megan's phone.

As the two girls arrived back at their dorm room, they were immediately confused seeing their door open, both of them vividly remembering the fact that both Caroline and Kaitlynn had made sure the door was locked before they left for the party.

Slowly the two girls entered their room and immediately saw that some of Megan's things were missing.

"Someone came in our room while we were gone" Kaitlynn realised.

Caroline walked over to the study table and turned the light on, "Megan's tablet is gone" she informed Kaitlynn.

"Let me guess, along with her suicide note?" Kaitlynn asked, walking over to Caroline, "Here, give me her phone, maybe there's something in here that will explain all this".

"It just doesn't make any sense" a frustrated Caroline said, handing Kaitlynn, Megan's phone, "First, the roommate we're not supposed to have might know about vampires and then happen to be killed by a vampire, and now the school's covering it up? Seriously, who is this girl?".

Kaitlynn let out a frustrated groan, "There's nothing on Megan's phone that will help us out in this mystery" she stated, handing Caroline the phone back.

Caroline looked down at Megan's phone and her eyes went wide seeing the picture on the screen, "Kait, look at this photo" she said, showing her best friend a photo with Megan and an man.

Kaitlynn looked at the photo, "Yeah, I already saw that photo, it's just Megan and a man".

"This man in the photo, is Grayson Gilbert" Caroline revealed.

Kaitlynn looked at Caroline in shock, "As in Elena's dad?" she asked.

"As in Elena's dad" Caroline confirmed.

Caroline sat in her bed, her back to her headboard, looking down at her phone, at the text she looks at every night, the one text that broke her heart into a million pieces.

Caroline,

The last thing I ever wanted to do was hurt you, but I'm about to do that and I'm so sorry for this, after dropping Silas in the quarry, I stayed there for a while just thinking and I realised I can't come back to Mystic Falls.

I love you but I'm losing my sanity in that town, I'm not who I used to be there, I'm sorry, I know you're going to hate me for this but hopefully one day you will forgive me, because I do love you but you deserve someone better then me, you deserve a lot more then I can offer.

Goodbye Caroline, hopefully one day you'll find someone better then me and then maybe you will have it in your heart to forgive me.

Brayden.

After reading the text what seemed to Caroline for the millionth time, the emotional vampire laid back in her bed and sobbed, this was her nightly routine, though from the outside she acted like she hated Brayden, the actual truth was the from the inside Caroline was broken, the one person she thought would be with her for the eternity left her and that to through a text, a text that literally came out of no where, Caroline thought they were doing so good, she didn't know Brayden was struggling, it made her think that maybe the Brayden Salvatore she knew wasn't the real Brayden Salvatore after all.

Kaitlynn laid in her bed, her heart hurting hearing Caroline's cries.

"Care, you okay?" a concerned Kaitlynn asked.

"Yeah" Caroline cried, "Yeah, I'm fine".

Kaitlynn sighed, "I know this heartbreak hurts a lot right now, but I promise it won't always be like this, eventually the hurt will get better".

Caroline turned to Kaitlynn, a small smile on her face, "I'm really glad that you're here".

Kaitlynn gave Caroline a small smile, "Back at you, Forbes".

Once Caroline had turned away, Kaitlynn faced the ceiling, once again the bad feeling regarding Brayden started consuming Kaitlynn, but she didn't say anything about it to Caroline, knowing that everytime she mentioned Brayden, Caroline broke a little more, and Kaitlynn didn't want to add to her best friend's hurt, she wanted to make it better, but at the same time she refused to believe that Brayden left Caroline willingly.

Brayden, who was still stuck in the safe and drowning constantly, once again started hallucinating.

In his hallucination, he was once again by the same window as before, this time holding a glass of blood in his hand.

"You're thinking about it" Damon realised, standing behind his twin, "Flip the switch brother, put yourself out of this misery, please".

"If I turn it off this time Damon, I'm not sure I'll ever turn it back on" Brayden whispered, "Remember how long it took for me to turn it back on last time? I nearly lost everything in the process".

"You don't deserve this, Brayden" Damon said, "For everything you do for people, this is what you get in return? How is that fair? Hey", Damon put his hands on Brayden's shoulders and forced him to face him, "Just turn it off, turn it off".

An emotional Brayden closed his eyes and prepared himself to turn his humanity off, the pain starting to become too much, just as Brayden was about to switch it off, a familiar voice brought him back.

"Don't do this Brayden", Brayden opened his eyes and this time instead of his brother, he found himself face to face with his humanity, with his soulmate, with his Caroline, "You can't let go Brayden".

"Princess" Brayden whispered.

Caroline nodded her head, she then cupped Brayden's face in her hands, "I know you're hurting a lot, but you can't give up Brayden, you don't give up, the Brayden Salvatore I know, the Brayden Salvatore that I love, fights till the very end, and it's not the end yet Brayden, it's far from it, we're just beginning, if not for yourself, then for us, you have to keep fighting Brayden, fight and find your way back to me, please".

"I will" Brayden whispered, "I will fight and I will come back to you".

"And I'll be waiting right where you left me" Caroline whispered, a sad smile on her face.

Damon entered Brayden's room, a room he hasn't entered since his twin brother left, or was forced to stay away because of Silas.

Damon walked over Brayden's side table, he picked up the framed photo of him and Caroline at Miss Mystic Falls, immense guilt shown clearly on his face.

After placing the photo back on the side table, Damon pulled out his phone and pulled up his contact list, his finger hovered over Caroline's name, but for some reason he couldn't get himself to call her, Caroline has spent the whole summer hating Brayden for leaving her, when she finds out the reality, Damon knew she will be beyond broken, the guilt will be too much for her, and if Damon can delay that for some time, he will.

Next Damon's finger hovered over Kaitlynn's contact, he then shook his head, knowing Kaitlynn will automatically tell Caroline.

Next up was Fae, Damon didn't even bother contemplating about her, he had attempted many times to contact her but she never picked up, so he had no hope she would pick her phone this time either.

There was only one person who could help Damon save his brother from whatever Silas had done to him.

"Hello".

"It's time to come home little brother" Damon said.

"Damon, I'm not--".
