I gasped when I saw what it said- the amber alert, that is.
"What's that?" Jay asked, looking over my shoulder at it.
"Everyone be quiet," I hissed at them out of the corner of my mouth, quickly taking a screenshot and dismissing the alert. "Nobody move."
Cole put his head close to mine and whispered, "Anna, what was that?"
I put my finger to my lips for him to be quiet.
We sat through a whole two minutes of the movie before I started to notice people glancing at us even more, but I stayed put.
Somehow we got through about twenty minutes without too many noticeably suspicious comments from the boys (the movie was very interesting to them). Then I started to get really nervous when a man got out of his seat, took one painfully obvious look at us, and headed toward the exit. As he left, he pulled his phone out.
I knew we needed to get out of there. Something was not right; this was more than just a coincidence.
"We need to go," I whispered, tapping each of them to get their attention. "Let's go." I again put my finger to me lips. Fortunately this gesture was enough for them to trust me, and they followed me silently out of the theatre. Unfortunately, we were sitting near the middle of the theater, so I'm sure people noticed us. At least we were leaving.
The man was there, standing by the door. I tried not to look at him, even though I knew he was staring at us. I just hoped he didn't see Zane.
I glanced back one more time as I opened the door to the theater.
He was following us. I don't think the others saw him.
I found Cole's hand and gripped it, and held back a sob and had to restrain myself from running to the car.
It was now about 7 PM and at this time late fall it starts to get dark out. There was a beautiful last bit of a sunset but I barely noticed.
As soon as we reached the car I jumped in. "Let's go," I hurriedly said to Cole as soon as everyone was all inside.
He started driving, and as soon as we were on the main road, he asked, "Where are we going?"
"Anywhere," I replied, "just away."
"I wanted to see the rest of the movie," Jay whined.
"Seriously, what happened?" Kai demanded.
I inhaled. "It's just... People might have started to recognize you, and... That would not be good," I lied. "I'm sorry for putting you in this danger, it was careless of me and I shouldn't have." I really was sorry. I was stupid; I had been too excited and didn't think.
"That's ok," I think everyone said except Kai. Typical.
"Why did you make us leave once that man stepped out of the theatre?" Zane asked.
Thankfully (well perhaps that isn't the right word) I didn't have to answer because there was a siren coming from behind us.
Noticing it, my face paled, and I felt nauseous.
"They aren't after us, right?" Jay asked with a nervous chuckle.
They were quickly approaching.
"What the-" Kai gasped. It sounded like he cursed except I don't think they know curse words since they're from a kids' show. Is that how that works?
"That is not a police cars," Zane observed.
"What do you mean, they're not police cars?" Jay squeaked. "What are they then?"
"They appear to be undercover in some way."
"Sheriff," I squeaked.
"We gonna try to outrun them or pull over?" Cole asked me.
I shrugged. "I don't really feel like getting arrested."
"WHAT ARE WE EVEN GETTING ARRESTED FOR?" Jay screamed, but we all pretty much ignored him.
"Anyone else feel like a car chase?" Cole grinned, and screeched around a corner.
"Ahh!" I yelped, clutching my seat.
"Would you mind telling us what this is all about?" Kai yelled.
"Now is not the time!" I returned.
The chase went on, crazy turns and such, all the way through the downtown for several minutes, holding on for dear life. If I got smashed into the door I didn't notice because of all the adrenaline. I was surprised we didn't get cut off by the sheriff but I guess Cole was just that good of a driver. Then we got out into the open where there were much less turns to be made, and it was their speed versus ours.
"Shoot, I'm really sorry, this is probably really bad of me-" Cole started, speeding up more.
"You're fine!" I laughed. "I would be dead by now if I tried what you're doing. Besides, I'm the one that told you to."
"If we are going to elude them much longer, you must make some sort of turn to outmaneuver them!" Zane exclaimed.
"I know," Cole said, and turned sharply down a road that looked like private property to me, but what do I know?
Of course the car followed. Then it seemed like we were gaining distance, and Cole made another turn (somehow), and I thought it would be home free from there.
But as soon as that glimpse of hope passed through my mind, another car somehow showed up, right behind us, and too close for comfort.
Suddenly a bullet shattered through the top of the back window and through the windshield. I screamed.
