My Father Taught Me: ...If You Want To Know, Find Out

My Dad is always learning, and whatever he learns, he shares with us.

Growing up, he always had an Atlas nearby (for those of you under 20 : Once upon a time, before Google Map and the internet, we had to look at maps in a big book called an Atlas. It was often the size of a small Coffee table and had no Zoom function. Absolutely primitive, I know).

He used to play "Name the Capital" with us, where he would name a capital and we would have to name the country it belonged to.

When Survivor was in its prime, my Dad researched each location and put a pin in the big map we had on the wall.

He was meticulous in his research and very thorough.

He is the man, who when curious about the different properties of oils and their effects on cooking would set up a "science lab" in the kitchen, where he would try each one, and then vary the methods to see what results he gets.

For a while, when we were adolescents, we had two different compost bins because he was "trying something" (often the thing he was trying was my mother's nerves).

Today, my sister and I share the same passion for learning. When in a group of people and a question comes up, we are the first to say "Hang on, I'll Google it."

We will never, the three of us, be content to wonder about something, and then not try to learn it, and neither should you.

Knowledge is out there to be gained and in today's information overload, there's just no reason not to try.

So, give it a shot. Next time a question crosses your mind, grab Wikipedia by the balls and go for it. You might just learn something.
