Two: Men in Black
My alarm beeps and screams and makes all manner of racket to awake me from my slumber. I rose groggily from my magenta sheets and looked at the clock, it was nearly midnight, right when my shift started.
I looked out the window next to my bed, a crescent moon was rising high in the sky, I sighed and wrapped myself in a large fuzzy jacket over my shirt and slipped on my shoes.
My raven hair was a mess and I could barely keep my eyes open. You would think after two years I would be used to this, but I wasn't, my internal clock was all wrong.
I trudge to elevator and push the button to get to the ground floor.
The soothing elevator music was not helping my grogginess, thankfully, the ride didn't take too long.
As I stepped into the lobby I did notice, in my groggy stupor, two very peculiar people, both had dark black suits and black sunglasses to cover their eyes and one was talking into an earpiece.
The other followed me with his eyes and I was suddenly very, very awake, I quickly left the building and started down the road to my bus stop.
I couldn't shake the feeling I was being followed, I refused to look behind me however, and when I reached the bench that signified the stop I reluctantly stopped to look.
Nothing, not a soul, I sighed in relief and turned to face the road.
"A little late to be out isn't it?" I jump ten feet in the air and whip so quickly around that I dizzy myself.
It was the guy from the elevator, his hands stuffed in his pockets and an ambivalent expression trained on me, I gulped, this man was going to be the death of me.
"Then why are you?" I snap back at him, and for a moment I could've sworn I saw him smirk. But maybe not, as he was back to his normal, blank expression.
"I asked you first." I sighed as the bus pulled up to the stop, and I was glad to be rid of him for the night.
"I'm going to work. Good-" He follows me onto the bus, and cocks his head in what can only be described as amusement.
"So am I." I growl under my breath and find a seat, and as fate would have it, there are only two seats, right next to each other.
I sat and he stared at the seat beside me before plopping his huge figure next to me.
I looked at him for a moment, and I decided I should at least be pleasant. And try to make him feel welcome.
"Where do you work? There aren't many shifts this late." He looked down upon me like a giant looking down upon a tiny human and twiddles his thumbs.
"This kids pizza place, with freaky looking animatronics." My jaw dropped, I had heard Gene, My boss, talking about getting me a partner, but him?! Why?!
"Are you kidding me? Ugh... So do I." He looked surprised at first, and then he returned the favor by leaning down to me, wether to hear me better or freak me out I was unsure.
"Oh... Uh... Sorry, about earlier, I didn't mean to scare you..." I heard some nervousness in his voice and I sighed inwardly, if this guy was my coworker then I at least needed his name.
"It's fine, I just saw those guys in suits and got a little on edge." I reply, and if anything that made him more tense and he grumbled to himself.
"Yeah, they do that." I managed to hear before a bump in the road jostled the conversation from our minds.
"I never got your name." I said politely and he stayed silent for a moment before responding.
"Uh... Aaron." Aaron, that was a very common name but somehow it made me so much more interested in his character.
"Aphmau." I recite my own name proudly, he gives me that look when someone hears a weird name, the one where your eyebrows curl up and your mouth curves into a half confused smirk.
"Aphmau, Unique name." Aaron pronounced it with an almost growl like accent, letting the last syllable roll off his tongue like a purr.
"Yup I-" The bus screeched to a stop at the same moment, it was our stop. The bus was still crowded, but if I walked as close to Aaron as I could he parted the crowd easily.
As soon as I stepped off, and a few other passengers jumping off behind me, the bus sped off again, down the road and around the bend.
The building where the place was held was just around the curb, it was a short, red brick building that screamed 80's and the smell of bad pizza wafted in a good ten foot area around it.
"Does It always smell like that?" I heard Aaron comment behind me, and a turn to laugh at his expense.
"Yup. What did you expect? Good pizza?" He shook his head and before I could open the door he slipped in front of me, I was already tired so I opened my mouth to protest, until he opened the door for me.
"Ladies first." He said matter of factly, and for one I give him an actual smile that wasn't just a sarcastic smirk.
"Oh! Thank you." He nods and I step inside the foyer, the stench of cheap pizza even stronger here.
"My nose regrets my decisions." He holds his nose as we walk through the small hall, the inside had bathrooms where we currently were, at the entrance, and beside that was the desk to get in.
Through the hall was the main area full of tables and colorful cups laid out for tomorrow's kids.
And the fuzzy animatronics sat on stage, I do admit, they still were unsettling, and Aaron seemed to share my thoughts because the next words out of his mouth were:
"Ugh... Their so creepy..." I chuckle at this, and go down the hallway to the left, the two steel doors on either side were thick and thankfully, locked as soon as they closed.
"Are We sharing an office too? High end my-" I hand him his uniform, a blue jacket with a badge secured on the front, and a hat.
He stared at the hat for a few seconds before tossing it onto the desk, and hung his jacket on one of the chairs in the office.
I slip off my fuzzy jacket and just slide my uniform over my shirt, I fixed my hat and turned to inform my new coworker what we did.
I turned to find him half naked and pulling on his uniform.
"What in the name of Irene are you doing?" I asked calmly, but on the inside I was screaming at him. Why did he think it was a good idea to change in front of someone he'd only known for a few hours!?
"Sorry!" Even though he still had that bandana covering the top half of his face, I could tell he was also uncomfortable.
"The jacket only fits me if I put it on like this." He finished and I closed my eyes and nodded, trying very hard not to implode.
"Okay, you can open them."
I opened my eyes and the jacket was most definitely way too small for him, it hugged his figure so tightly I could see the ridges of his... Nevermind!
"Now, you know what your doing?" He sook his head, and I handed him a flashlight, and an earpiece.
"This earpiece will allow us to communicate even if we're separated, the flashlight is if the power goes out." He cocked his head and held his earpiece, which immediately screamed with feedback noise.
I winced, but he nearly fell to the floor.
"Yeah, don't use it when we're this close." I tell him through the ringing in my ears and he gives me a small thumbs up while he holds his ears.
"Wait, does the power go out often?" He asked breathless, messaging his ears after the screaming feedback.
"Yes, because Gene, our boss, botched the wiring job, as long as we don't plug anything in though, we should be fine." I glare at him as he puts his phone charger down onto the the desk.
"Noted."
I sit down and watch the cameras for I don't know how long, Aaron twiddling his thumbs and screwing around with his chair beside me.
"Why didn't you shut the door?" He suddenly asked and I looked over in surprise, because I definitely remembered shutting them.
And the one I came through did, but the other side, the one Aaron was on, was wide open.
I tapped on the button to close it, but it becomes increasingly obvious that it wasn't going to move.
"Must be jammed, watch the cameras, I'll be right back." He stared at the TVs, showing viewpoints of different cameras and then turned to me.
"What are you doing?" He asks as I stepped out to see what was jamming the door.
"Fixing the door, just make sure nothing sneaks up on me." I slipped out to the other side and immediately see what was wrong, some kid had gotten sticky cheese and all manner of sticky substances on the gears of the door.
"Great, I'm going to have to get cleaning supplies from the storage room. Stay here, follow me with the cameras." Before he had time to say a word I was off down the hall, briskly walking to the cleaning closet.
"Uh.... Aphmau, are you heading towards the cleaning closet?" He asked through my earpiece, and I push on the button to answer.
"Yes Aaron, I am." I heard him stop for a second then reply with something that made my heart sink.
"There's a giant rabbit in there."
Bonnie, Bonnie the freaking bunny was in my way, of all the places, he decided to go there.
"Crap, Uh... just keep an eye on him, tell me when he leaves." I heard a hum in affirmation and waited for the all clear.
A few moments pass that feel like hours, and finally he comes from the other end.
"He's gone, but hurry, he's headed towards the door that's open." He sounded a little nervous, and I listened, Bonnie could be unstable at times and her facial recognition probably wouldn't recognize him.
I pulled open the door and grabbed a rag and cleaning spray and sprinted back to the door, but I hear Aaron's panicked voice come from my earpiece.
"Don't move." I stop in my tracks, face to face with the massive purple rabbit with red, glowing eyes, it just stands there, staring, creepily.
I had never been in this situation, I had always been behind a door when these guys got close, now, fear had started to well up inside me like a geyser.
"I'll distract it, you fix the door." Before I could protest a loud bang came from the other hall and the massive robotic rabbit looked in that direction long enough for me to slip past it.
I spray the cleaner on the door and scrub as I hear loud metallic footsteps behind me, finally the door starts moving downwards, but something pulls me away from the door, a scream.
The door shuts and I'm in the office, Aaron's hand on the back of my shirt, his breathing was sporadic but I'm sure mine was worse.
"Too close." He muttered to himself before letting go of my jacket.
"That's never happened. Lucky you were there, thank you." He nodded and went back to looking at the cameras, almost ignoring me.
"Y-you're welcome, let's finish our shift." His voice was still nervous, and I could tell he was purposely avoiding looking directly at me.
The rest of the night was uneventful, and Aaron barely talked at all either, was it something I did? I didn't think so, but maybe he was just tired.
The bus ride back was uneventful, and he talked even less then, I was getting kind of worried. Did he feel sick?
Before we got off the elevator I turned to him.
"Are you okay? You've been quiet-" He looked at me before motioning to behind me, the two men in suits from before stood watching us.
"Oh... I see, Night." I said in a whisper and he nods turning to his door and shutting gently behind him.
I open my door and collapse on my bed.
It was a long night.
