Twelve: Apartment Hunting
My apartment wasn't even cleaned from it's vandalism when we got back from work, it just had police tape stretched over it with absolutely no one inside.
I duck under the tape while Aaron steps over it, he looks around for a moment under his bandana before sighing.
He had put it back on when we went to work, I was a little disappointed, I still didn't know why he hid his eyes, but at least, when were were alone, he took it off.
"Never got to see it before now. Let's see if we can find anything." He said, ruffling my raven hair and rummaging through the rubble.
We search around a good while, I stepped over a few broken chairs and Aaron opens the door to my bedroom.
I follow him, I had searched every inch of the rest of my place.
My room had somehow managed to be mostly untouched, my laptop was gone and the door had been busted, but it mostly stayed the same.
"Hmmm... I guess someone had to leave pretty quick, your bedroom looks okay." He went over to my closet and opened the door, rummaging around.
I open drawers in my desk, there had to be something in here, anything, we had a lead, but we needed to be completely sure before we went and accused somebody.
"Uh..." I heard Aaron mutter from my closet, I thought he had found something, so I turn to face him.
"Find something?"
He turned around and lifted up a hanger with... a very, very short and revealing black dress I had almost forgotten I had.
His face was red and his other hand rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
"Something is right. Irene, why would you wear this? It's.... so..... unlike you." He had trouble forming his thoughts into words, and my face went pink.
"Ugh... Gene. I wore it at a party once, then stashed it away. I know, it's so short." He shook his head and stuffed the dress back into my closet.
And I reach the final drawer.
I pulled it out and there's something I didn't remember putting there.
A button.
Yes, a button, it was black, and slightly shiny, and had unreadable red letters etched onto the face and initials etched onto the back.
T.V.
"Found something!" I nearly tackled Aaron to the ground, trying to show him this insignificant little button that I may have just forgotten that I had.
"A button? Really?" I pouted and turned it over, showing him the initials.
"T.V.? Sounds like a company name. Hold on." He pulled his phone out of his pocket And typed something, a large grin on his face.
"Yup, Telecom Vision, one of my father's business partners, their a computer company." He took the button and looked closely at it, holding his phone up to it and magnifying it.
"And those letters are their logo. That's definitely them." I got excited, finally we were getting somewhere. But then I realized something.
"Maybe, But were gonna need more than a button to prove it. Not to mention we can't just accuse an entire company, we need to single someone out." He nodded in agreement moving the button in his hands.
I heard noises from outside my bedroom door so I look out, and see a young man in a cop uniform speaking into the radio.
He saw us before I could warn Aaron and immediately he has his hands on his gun.
Both our hands snapped up way above our heads, Aaron dropping the button in the process.
"Who are you?! Why are you in a crime scene?! He yells and I piped up to try and explain.
"I live here, I wanted to see if any of my stuff was still here after the break in." The cop looks skeptically over at us, but then turns to Aaron.
"And you? What are you doing here?" Aaron's posture changed completely, and his tone shifted.
"Helping her, not that it matters, but I don't think my father would like to know the men he's paying to protect this city pointed a gun at his son." His voice was slick and he sounded so much like his father I had thought the man himself appeared.
The cops face went white, and he lowered his gun almost immediately.
"Oh, Mr. Lycan's son! I'm sorry, but this is a crime scene, I'm going to have to ask you to leave, you too ma'm." The cop had the fear of Irene in him and Aaron grabbed me by the hand and dragged me out, nodding to the officer.
"Of course, if you could bring her stuff to my apartment that would be great." And he dragged me into ou- his apartment shutting the door securely behind him.
"Crap." He murmured, looking out the peep-hole.
"What?" I asked, confused and slightly worried.
"He's going to report that to my father." He said, a bit of nervousness, but mostly tiredness in his voice.
"And? Doesn't he know my apartment got ransacked anyway? He owns the building." In that second Aaron smacked his forehead so hard I thought he knocked himself out.
"Duh! And that's how the gang got in!" I look at him confused and he grabs the sides of my face in excitement.
"If my father's partners hired the gang to ransack your place, of course he would let them in!" I backed up and watched him geek out like a ten year old.
"I think my father's trying to get you out of this building, and he's using every resource available to do it." I looked at him like he was crazy, mostly because I thought he was.
"Why would your dad want me out? And I thought... he... had something to do with it?" I saw him think for a moment, open his mouth, decide against it, but then start to speak again.
"I don't know. But how good are your impromptu acting skills?"
"Uh... okay.... I guess, what does that have to do with-" A knock on the door brought attention away from our conversation, and Aaron immediately cleared his throat.
"Because that's my father." I gulped and sat on the couch, and tried to act natural as the big man himself walked in.
"Hello son." He stepped in and immediately saw me pretending to tap away on my phone when actually I was recording the entire thing.
"And you." He added and I looked up at him with a blank expression.
"Why are you here?" Aaron asked gruffly, it was very obvious he knew the answer already, but Derek didn't need to know that.
"Oh I just heard that the girls apartment got broken into, just came in to remind you that only couples can live together, so tell her to pack her things."
He turns and I couldn't help but smirk, and Aaron looked over and winked at me.
"I know, we are a couple." Derek stopped in his tracks and looked over, seeing Aaron's smug face.
"Your bluffing." He said with a seething rage under his proper tone, so Aaron turned to me and turned it up a notch.
"Come here babe." I stopped myself from stiffening up and got up, leaning my phone on a vase so it was still recording.
I walk over to him, I tried my hardest to not, one, burst out laughing, or two, throw up.
He wrapped his arm around me and I leaned into him by instinct, I didn't even have to act, I just did.
Derek seemed to get madder, and finally some emotion started to show through.
"Since when?!"
"It's why I moved in, to be closer to her." Aaron dodged the question like a pro, but Derek must of had experience with this because he calmed himself, and started asking questions.
"Where did you meet?"
"Online, talked for awhile and got to know her, wanted to meet her." I felt him start to stiffen, but I grabbed his hand, he started to relax a little.
"Do you love her?" Aaron started to squirm This was it, the ultimate lie, he had to hold himself together.
He looked at me for a moment and squeezed my hand.
"Yes." Even though I knew it was a lie I felt the heat rush through my entire being and a blush start making it's way to my face.
Derek looked at his son, scanning him for any signs of untruth, until he turned to the door.
"Then I'll bring over your mother and sister, they'd love to meet..." He looked at me with a face of slight disgust "...her, good day."
He shut the door behind him and I felt Aaron nearly fall forward, beads of sweat falling down from his temples.
"Oh Irene... let that never happen again." He flopped on the couch, his fingers tangling in his own hair.
"Well, looks like I'm meeting your family!" I yell with sarcastic excitement, flopping out the couch with him, my heart still fluttering thinking about his lie.
Do you love her?
...Yes
"I'm not worried about that, it was an empty threat, he would never tell my mother what he was doing. She'd leave him." I sighed in relief, but I still couldn't get it out of my head.
"I can't believe he asked you that..." I murmured under my breath, and he turned to face me, but still holding onto him bandana.
"Asked me what?"
"If you loved me." I answered and he went red, and I gasped when he closed his eyes and looked away.
"Aaron. Do you?" He slipped off his bandana slowly, but didn't look directly at me, there was a red tint to his eyes.
"Yes...." I just stared at him, but he coughed and began again.
"I mean... I don't know... you mean a lot to me, I want to protect you. You're my best friend! I love you like a guard loves his lord." My heart calmed down a little but I still felt the heat in my face.
After about a minute, he took a glance at me and smiled, his eyes now devoid of the red that resided in them, maybe it was just a trick of the light.
"Sorry, did I panic you? I didn't mean to, Sometimes I have trouble... with my emotions.... I don't know how to feel about you..." I could tell he was struggling, knowing now, with being forced to bottle up His emotions his entire life, I didn't blame him.
"I think... your pretty... beautiful.... You make me laugh, smile. You're the only person I trust to see me... the real me."
I smiled and felt the heat fly back up to my cheeks, this stupid crush needed to go, it was just a phase, with everything happening.
"But... I haven't known you long. And my father, I don't think I even remember how to love someone." He finished, I tilted his head up with the palm of my hand so he would look directly at me.
"Aaron it's fine, you don't have to explain your feelings to me, showing them mean's so much more to me, just relax, I only asked because it seemed difficult for you to answer when he asked it." He smiled gratefully and nodded, moving his hand to hold mine to his cheek.
"Thank you, we'll talk more later. Right now, I think I'm going to rest." He rose up and went to his room without another word.
And a part of me wondered wether or not he was lying to his father, or lying to himself.
