(1) Freedom Comes At A Cost
Cory's POV
My lense shot open from my nap as I heard a blood-curling scream echo down the hallway. I sat up quickly and looked at my solid-white door. All four walls of my small, box-like room were white, and a dim, yellow-ish light lit it up. My camera lense was heavy on my face as I looked around cluelessly. I quickly jumped to my feet as the scream faded, but the atmosphere stayed tense. I looked around my small room, my metal bed with with sheets and a white pillow sat against the wall in the corner next to me. A small chest sat at the end of my bed. The chest was for any belongings that we might have. That would be useful if we were actually allowed to have belongings with us. I always found it extremely useless, wait... Why am I still talking about a chest? I turned back to my door and stared at it, listening closely. Then, another scream rang out, except closer to my door. "AHHHHH! HEEELLLPPP!" I heard a female voice yell. I almost started smiling at the sound of such pain, like the physchopath that I am, but I kept myself together.
What? How do you think I got here? I killed people. I killed my parents, then a few civilians, then I got picked up in that stupid truck. Now im here. In this living heck. I listened closely as the pained screams faltered into whimpers, which faltered into silence. I walked to my door and put my ear against it, listening closely. Screams were normal here, but not screams like that. Something serious must've happened.
I listened closely, and soon I heard footsteps passing my door, aswell as ragged breathing. I wanted to call out to them, to question them about my saftety, but I stayed silent. Every part of my body screeched at me to stay silent. Maybe it was the strange breathing, or maybe even the strange, unnatural limp that they walked with, but either way, I stayed silent. I slowly backed away from the door, fear creeping up my spine. Then, the lights above my flickered, causing me to jump slightly in suprise. I prayed silently that the lights would stay on, but my prayers went unanswered. The lights flickered once more, then they remained off. I heard some wails come from other rooms near mine, mostly people who didn't like darkness.
A power outage? That NEVER happens... I thought skeptically. My room was almost pitch black, all except for some sunlight that came through the very small window at the top of the wall, to high for me to look through. I tapped my camera lense on the side, and a slight red light from my camera face began to glow, acting as a dim flashlight, but itbwas better than nothing. I had been an experiment to these inhumane scientists, and they had tested if a human could survive with a camera as a face, and I was unlucky enough to be chosen.
I stared at the door, wishing more that ever that I could have the small, bared off window that I had once had on it. I had lost my window privileges after the nurses got fed up with me throwing things at them when they passed by, but can you blame me? If you were stuck in this stupid room all day, wouldn't you want some entertainment to? Just saying, I lost my window privileges fairly quickly. Then I realized something, without electricity, the electric locks that made our doors practically unopenable from the inside were turned off.
The door definently wouldn't open without a fight, thanks to the regular locks, but it could definently be opened. I smiled slightly as I grabbed the door handle, but I stopped myself as I heard something worrying. Someone else near me was breaking down their door, "Freedom!" An unfamiliar voice screamed as I heard the hinges on a door break. I heard others break their doors down aswell, and I smiled at the thought of freedom. I wanted to join them, but then I froze in fear. The same voice could be heard screaming in pain, "AHHH HELP! IT'S EATING ME!!! IT'S EATING MEEEE!!" He yelled, then silence filled the halls once more. Other screams if desperation and pain filled the air, and all I could do was listen. As silence once again filled the air, I slowly let go of my door handle and backed up. I slowly walked to the corner of my room and sat down. I pulled my knees to my chest silently. The only noises being my rapid heartbeat and my uneven, rapid breathing. I didn't know what was happening, but I did know one thing... There was no way in heck I was going out there.
I had been sitting silently in the corner for maybe two hours now. I had heard one scream this while time, and I never thought I'd say this, but itnwas relieving at the least. I slowly stood up and walked back to my door. I hesitantly put my ear up to it and listened closely. I heard nothing. I took in a deep, shaky breath. "Okay...here we go..." I murmured to myself. I twisted the door handle and swiftly, yet strongly, kicked the door. The door busted open from the rough kick, making a loud BANG noise. I inhaled sharply, alarm running through my body. I backed away from the door nervously, listening closely. But I heard nothing coming, and nothing in the hallway.
I shakely walked forward, a nervous atmosphere surrounding me. I stood in the doorway, still in my room. I peeked my head out if the doorway, and I froze in fear at what I saw. Blood shimmered in the dim light, splattered on the white walls and concrete floors. Some bloody arms and legs were scattered on the floor, along with stray meat and flesh. The hallway smelled rancid, and it made me want to puke, but I knew that would only make the smell worse. I didn't want to leave my room, but then something caught my eye. A bloody knife laid against the wall on the other side of the hallway, right across from my room. It shimmered with the crimson substance. I stared at it longingly. I then peeked down the halls cautiously, just in case it was a trap. I mean, you can never be to careful, there are some real crazies around here. Me included.
I carefully sneaked out of my room and speed-walked to the knife. I grabbed it's handle and quickly picked it up. I stood in the middle of the hall, starring at the blade, entranced. I felt an urge, a power, a thrill that I hadn't felt in a LONG time. I hadn't even held anything close to a knife in years. We weren't allowed to have silverware here. Three days a week we ate red soup, which wasn't that bad, but it wasn't good either. Two days a week we ate fruit soup, which was a soup of fruits and herbs, but it tasted stale most of the time. And the other two days, we didn't eat at all.
I gripped the knives handle so tightly that my knuckles turned white. I smiled slightly, excitement coursing through me. I wasn't as scared anymore. I was good with knife defense. I was better with a bow, but a knife is more satisfying. I began slowly walking down the eery hallway, brandishing the knife in front of me. Bloody footprints stained the concrete floor, making it sticky on my white shoes. I had on long, white pants, and a short-sleeved white shirt. I hated white, which is why this place is driving me more insane than I already am. I honestly like the blood on the walls and floor, it gives this place a nice paint job. I once again glanced at the knife and began to play with it in my fingers.
I walked down the hall playing with the knife, then I can to a turn in the hallway. I didn't think much of it, but I looked up from my knife anyway. I turned the corner and yelped in surprise as I came face-to-face with a bloody dude. I gasped and stumbled back as I saw the chunks that were missing from his mid-section, arms, and legs. His eyes were rolled back, and bloody tears dripped down his already bloody face. I was to scared to move, then to my surprise, the monstrous dude pounced on me. A gasped as he pushed me to the ground, and the knife slipped out of my hand as I fell.
I pushed my hands firmly on the dudes chest as I tried to keep his face a safe distance from mine. I yelped again as he snapped at me again, trying to rip at my face. Some of his bloody tears fell onto my cheek, making me flinch. His blood was cold, as if there was no heart beating to keep the blood warm. Is he a zombie or something!? I thought fearfully. I snapped out of my thoughts as the creature snapped at my nose, missing it by a centimeter. I pushed harder on his chest, but he seemed to be stronger than me. Why did I drop the knife? Why did I drop the knife? Why did I drop the knife? I questioned myself repeatedly. I glanced over to where the knife laid near me on my left side. I glanced back at the creature, then back at the creature. I could probably reach the knife...But I could also due doing so... I thought quickly to myself. Then I sighed, welp, i'd rather go out trying... I thought.
I took in a shakey breath, then I shoved the creatures chest as hard as I could, and quickly used my left arm to grab for the knife as I held the creature off me with my right arm. I could barely keep the creature from snapping my arm off, but I felt a rush of relief as my left hand felt the knife handle. I gripped the handle, then I quickly brought my left hand up, with the knife, and slashed the creatures throat. The creature screeched in pain, then blood splashed out of it's mouth, and its body fell limp, falling onto my slightly shaking body. I gasped and quickly shoved it's corpse off if me, and I stumbled to my feet. I stared at the creatures body, then I looked down at my clothes. They were move soaked with cold blood, and I sighed in annoyance at their heavy, wet feeling. Then I smiled slightly, well, bloody is better than that stupid white. I thought simply, then I looked down the hall that I had just turned into, when I had gotten attacked. "Well, I might aswell keep going..." I murmured to myself. I gave the creatures corpse one last glance, then I kept walking down the hall.
I had been walking a for about 5 minutes now, squeezing the knife fearfully. Then, I heard footsteps coming from a turn in the hallway in front of me. I stiffened and held tighter on my knife. Please not another creature... I pleaded silently.
Then, I heard something that made me calm a bit. It was a soft, yet tense, british voice. "No, Uni~Chan, I don't hear someone in that hallway." They said quietly. I stiffened, they know um here... I thought, listening for more voices, hoping to hear who the boy was talking to. "Don't you call her an idiot, Ricky!" The same voice snapped. I listened closer, but I only heard one set of footsteps, and one voice.
"She isn't insane either, Duni." I heard him say as he approached. I slowly made my way to the edge of the hallway that they were about to come out of. "Duni, shut up. I'm not insane either." I heard him say. I held my knife tightly, He must be schitzaphranic... I thought cautiously. I brought my knife up. Schitzaphranic people could be very dangerous. I took in a deep breath, preparing for a possible fight, then...He turned the corner.
