III

Denver looked at the three girls in front of him.

He was chewing on his french fries, the taste of dirty oil and salt mixing with the fried potato in his mouth.

The three girls were sitting in front of him, chatting amongst themselves. He was wondering how he got in this situation.

In fact, when the girls mentioned going out, he didn't want them to go alone. After all, three small girls alone at night… it was not reassuring to him. He wanted to make sure they would be safe, and offered to come along. He just was not expecting them to actually agree with him joining them.

He was not really involved in their conversation, but he knew they were talking about the world’s history. It was a surprise for him to find out that Pearl seemed to know about China’s history, too. He wanted to join the conversation, after all, he was from Shanghai… but he moved to America at ten years old, and he was pretty sure Pearl knew more than he did about his own country’s history. At this point, joining the conversation was useless, so he just focused on his food.

«Oh, by the way, Meili, how did the audition go?» Evelina said, completely changing the topic of the conversation.

He was a bit curious about that. An audition?

«It went well, I’m waiting for their response. Hopefully, I’ll pass.»

Denver’s curiosity was not quite satisfied by this answer, so he joined the conversation.

«Audition?» he simply asked.

Meili nodded, her brown hair moving along with her head movements.

«I auditioned to be a dancer in a music video.»

Now, that was as impressive as it was surprising. Denver had no idea that Meili danced, and he had to admit, it was actually pretty cool. He was always impressed by dancers.

«Wait, really? That’s cool. What kind of dancing do you do?» he asked, now his attention fully on the girl.

She smiled proudly.

«I do ballet and hip hop! I also did some pole for a few years, a while back.»

His eyes widened. He didn't expect her to do multiple styles, especially so different from each other. But it was nice to know that Meili actually had hobbies besides annoying her brother.

«Wait, that’s so cool! How long have you been dancing for?»

Denver found himself genuinely interested by the topic, which was surprising, considering that he didn't like Meili that much.

«She’s been dancing for twelve years, Evelina said. And she’s good at it.
Yeah, she’s really good!» Pearl added.

Denver smiled softly. He liked to see how Pearl and Evelina supported Meili.

«Stop that! I can still improve! Meili said as her cheeks reddened slightly.
There’s always room for improvement, but you’re already so good!» Pearl replied.

For some reason, Denver loved to see that. He loved to see how Pearl and Evelina supported her.

«I think that, as long as you like it, it doesn’t matter if you’re good or not. Just enjoy it. But I have to admit, I’m sure you’re really good at dancing.» Denver admitted with a soft smile.

Meili looked at him. She seemed a bit confused, but the blush on her cheeks only got deeper at the man’s comment. She looked down for a second, before nodding slowly.

«I enjoy dancing… a lot. It’s my favorite thing in the world, she admitted in a low voice.
And you’re the best dancer I know, Meili.» Pearl said.

Evelina smiled softly, looking at the two friends, and put her hair back behind her shoulder, before speaking up.

«That’s right. She’s a great dancer. And you’re a good writer, Pearl.» She said, her voice full of honesty.

Denver couldn’t help but to love this moment. It just showed how good the girls were towards each other, how supportive they always were, and he wondered if it was the case for every girl out there, if all the girls in the world were as supportive with others. He smiled softly, enjoying the moment he was witnessing, of the girls supporting each other, and reminiscing about their dreams together.

Meili wanted to be a dancer, Pearl a writer, and Evelina wanted to do something about ice skating, like speed skating or figure skating.

He liked hearing them talk about their dreams. It just made them all more… human. Right, it was in that moment that he realized that, besides annoying his brother constantly, Meili had a life, a passion and feelings. And it was the same for the other two girls. As the conversation kept going, Denver apologized about what happened earlier, with the noise at her and Stanley's place.

«It’s no big deal, she said. You have nothing to apologize about. It’s not your fault.» She said.

She looked at him, and he could see the sincerity in her eyes.

«Still, it’s pretty messed up that your brother didn't even warn you we’d be there.» He replied with a soft smile.

For some reason, he was starting to enjoy the girl’s company. She was nice, he liked to talk with her. He liked getting to know her.

«I promise, it’s fine. It’s not your fault.» She said.

She was smiling, too. Her smile was small and soft, she looked so pretty, when she smiled. Her eyes didn't betray any dishonesty, they only showed sincerity. Her words were sincere and he was glad… he was glad that she was not mad at him. And the look in her eyes, it made him feel like he was safe, like he could be himself, like he could express his thoughts, around her. He felt like he was in the right place.

«Thank you, Meili. You’re actually nice, you know?»

She smiled a bit more and blushed softly. She looked so adorable, he just wanted to protect her.

He found himself thinking a bit… the way she looked, he would compare it to an angel. Right, the biblical angels were ethereal, but if she was an angel, she would be the prettiest of them all. The way she made him feel was nice, he loved the feeling that she was not judging him one bit. She was being genuinely nice.

What a nice girl.
