Chapter 1

Astrid's P.O.V.

"The ocean is so large and mysterious," I slam my mug down on the table.

"Are you serious, Emerald?! I don't need this right now," I told my brain.

"Sorry, I'll shut up," it says and I sigh.

"No you won't."

Hi, I'm Astrid Hofferon, and I am considered a psycho. You see sometimes my imagination gets the better of me and I end up having conversations with myself. I've learned to cope with it and it's not so bad, I mean, you are your own best friend, right? Anyway, I've decided to name my mind Emerald because I always fancied the eye color green instead of blue. So, when I want to see what I'm arguing with, I mold my mind into the human that I've always wanted to look like: armor, blond hair, and emerald green eyes. So not too different from what I am now, but still. I sometimes do it in my head but most times people would give me weird looks until they realized that I was talking to myself aloud. And then they'd avoid eye contact as if it's contagious or I'd ask them to back me up, or something. Just because I talk to myself doesn't mean I think my brains character exists.

"Hey, Astrid, is Emerald bothering you again?" Hiccup, our chief Stoick's son, asks mockingly as he passed my table.

"Oh, let me at him. I'll make sure he won't be able to walk again!"

"You know that won't help," I grumbled before finishing my chicken and leaving the Meade Hall with Emerald at my side.

"Wanna go to the arena?"

"What I really wanna do...is climb to the top of the Great Hall," I said, looking at her with a smirk.

"Now you're speakin' my language!" she cheered before running to the Great Hall. I ran after her and next thing I know, I was jumping onto the rock wall and slowly making my way to the top.

"Astrid!" I froze as the voice of my father reached my ears.

"What?" I called as I kept climbing, trying to catch up with Emerald. Suddenly, a purple bomb hit the rock just above me and shook the wall, making me lose my footing.

"Astrid!" Emerald screamed as I fell to the ground. Just when I'm sure I'm about to break my back, someone catches me. I look at the person to see it was Hiccup and he was looking pretty dang annoyed.

"Would you get inside, please?!" he shouted as he set me down and shoved me toward my hut.

"Emerald! Come on!" I called before running to my hut and going to the cellar. I waited in a corner as the raid went on without me. My job was to stay out from under everyone's feet while Hiccup, Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut got to help put fires out. "Why can't you just leave me alone some times so I can do something helpful?" I asked Emerald as she flashes to the cellar.

"Because you have too much on your mind and the only way you can forget everything is me. I don't like to nag you. I know I put you in danger. But you have to admit that even if you were able to tune me out, no one would want to listen to you. Not even your parents," she tells me.

"Maybe if I could kill a dragon, they would," I growl.

"Astrid, you know that even if I put you in danger, I also keep you safe. If you don't vent anything to anyone at all, you could have a break down."

"I just wish I could be a normal viking," I murmur, leaning my head on the wall.

"Hey! There is no such thing as normal," Emerald snaps. I lightly punch her shoulder as we waited for the raid to be done. Soon, the cellar door opens and Hiccup walks down a few steps.

"Come on, your dad wants to talk to you," he says gruffly.

"Well, he knows where to find me," I reply only to have him point his sword at me

"You wanna cut the yak dung and get out here?" he asks with a glare before walking back up the stairs and leaving me to exchange a bored glance with Emerald.

"Dad! Hiccup threatened me!" I whined childishly as I climbed out of the shelter.

"Never mind that, I thought I told you and Emerald not to go climbing the Great Hall," my dad says, grabbing my shoulders. He acted like he could see my mind, and acted like she existed, like she was his second daughter. It was sweet, but also a little embarrassing.

"We were bored, and Stoick doesn't let us in the arena!" I told him and he sighs.

"I'll see what I can do about that, just go to bed," he says and I nod before doing my nightly routine.

"I don't see why Stoick won't just let me blow off steam in there," I complained as I walked through Berk.

"I know, it's so annoying!"

"Sometimes I wish I could just grab him by his tunic, and throw him, into the den of a Nightfury!" I shout, pulling my fists to my chest.

"Do Nightfuries even live in dens?"

"How should I know? They aren't recorded," I said. I walk by the arena to hear voices coming from the inside. I walked to the rim to see the whole gang, just hanging out and talking about up coming dragon training. "H-hey, guys!" I called, secretly hoping they'd invite me to join. The group looks at me before exchanging glances.

"Is she talking to us?" I hear Hiccup whisper.

"I think so," Tuffnut doesn't quite pick up his hint to keep quiet, because he yelled.

"Look, I don't care if you guys think of me as a freak-" Hiccup cuts me off.

"Psycho," he corrects and I roll my eyes.

"I just need Fishlegs to answer a question," I say.

"What?! No! What are you doing?! You're not suppose to ask!" Emerald shouts and I realize I used my voice before hanging my head.

"Forget it," I said before walking off, feeling someones gaze following me. "Just one normal conversation," I mutter, "That's all I want. Is that too much to ask?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you aren't normal. Neither are Hiccup, Fishlegs, Snotlout, or the Nuts."

"Well, thank you for stating the obvious about everyone but Hiccup. He's the most normal one in that group, except he could use more meat."

"I told you, no one is normal!"

"You can keep telling me, but I won't believe it."

"Of course you won't!"

"So go away!"

"I can't! You control what I say!"

I let out a scream of frustration before picking up a rock and smashing it against my head. The rock shatters and I dust off my hands before stepping over it's ruins.
