Chapter Thirteen

Previously:

"Oh oh oh!" Ollie said, running over to me, tugging on my hoodie. "I have to tell you something. It's really important."

"What is it?"

"It is about the young prince," Ollie said and I winced inwardly at the way he described Roman. That what father called him, and I hated it.

"W-What is it?" I repeated, only stuttering a little.

"Well, I can't really TELL you," Ollie admitted. "You have to come with me! Come on, Vee!" Ollie said taking my hand.

"Waitwaitwait," I said, pulling back. "Where are you taking me, kid? Is it safe?"

Ollie giggled at that. "We are going to see her!"

"Who is her?" Logan asked, frowning, glancing between Patton and me, seeing if we knew who Ollie was talking about. Both of us remained just as clueless.

"Well, who else?" Ollie answered cheerfully, giggling.

I gasped at it finally hit me eyes widening. "Y-You don't mean..." I let my voice trail off in disbelief. T-There was no way, he could actually mean...

"Yup - Fairy Godmother!!"

"Come on, Vee," Ollie said, reaching for my hand.  "She's been waiting."

I was so stunned I couldn't even bring myself to speak.  How - What - HOW?

Fairy G O D M O T H E R?!

"Wait for us," Patton said hurriedly.  "We're comin' too.  Come on, Lo," Patton said leaving no room for argument.

But Ollie quickly shook his head.  "She only wants to see him," Ollie said, pointing a thumb at me.

Wait, why does she only want to see me? And why doesn't she want Patton or Logan to come? How did Ollie even know her to begin with?

Gosh, I had so many questions...

Sparks barked loudly, sniffing my combat boots.  It was almost like she knew I was getting ready to leave her again.

I kneeled down, rubbing behind her ears and she excitedly wagged her tail at all the attention - basically shoving her head in my face in attempt to lick me.

Was... was I really going to go with Ollie? To meet this... Fairy Godmother? I don't know, I don't know I don't want to leave without the others...

But if she only wanted to see me...

Was this an opportunity that I could pass up?

"You can stay with Dad, Sparks," I said, glancing up at Patton who was wearing a worried expression.  "Is that alright?" I asked, trying to hide the fact that my hands were shaking with nerves.

Patton nodded slowly, forcing a smile.  He kneeled down, holding his fist out to Sparks.  Curiously, she slowly abandoned me - sniffing him and licking his hand until he opened it.  Patton settled on the floor and Sparks all but climbed on top of him, trying to lick his face.  Patton was giggling almost immediately, petting her.  He really did love dogs - normal ones or hellhounds.

"Safe travels to both of you," Logan said, adjusting his glasses and taking a step backwards, eyes flickering to Patton - who was now giggling as Sparks kept licking his cheeks and hitting his glasses - Patton barely able to keep them on his face.

"Are you ready?" Ollie asked me excitedly, pushing up his own glasses and his large purple eyes blinked at me, slightly impatiently.

"Yeah sure, kid," I said, yanking my sleeves over my hands.  "Uh... where is...?" I let my voice trail off.

Ollie held out his hand on to me, expectantly.  "She told me she gave you a key."

I blinked in confusion, glancing at Logan and Patton, who both looked just as mystified as me.  A key? When did she give me anything, much less a key?

"What does the key look like?" Logan asked for us all.

Ollie shrugged.  "Something that's periwinkle."

"...Would you provide some possible examples?" Logan asked, frowned as he adjusted his glasses.  "What type of things are keys usually made from?

"Um," Ollie frowned thoughtfully.  "A flower, stone, leaf, seed, or something like that."

... A periwinkle stone.

Before I could even stop to think, I dug my hand - slightly stunned - into my pocket, pulling out the periwinkle stone that I had appeared in my pockets after Rom- after the funeral.  "Kinda like... this?" I asked, holding it out to Ollie.

Ollie blinked at the stone before giving me a smile.  "Yup, that's it," he said, taking it from me and tossing it around in his fingers.  "Where's the nearest mirror around here?" Ollie asked.  "It has to be really big."

All our eyes flickered to each other.  No, not Roman's room -

"I have one in my room," Logan offered.  "Follow me," he said and all of us followed, Sparks curiously staying right on Logan's heels, tail wagging curiously.  Her nose kept sniffing at Logan's shoes, trying in vain to him to stop and pet her.  Logan glanced down, but he didn't cave - continuing to lead the way to his room.

We reached his dark brown door and he easily popped it open, gesturing for us to enter.  Patton was the first, followed by Ollie, then me, and finally Sparks - who was still sniffing Logan's shoes and was probably sad that his brown loafers didn't have laces for her to chew and play with.

Logan's room was really neat and it had changed since the last time I'd been in here.  A large black desk, file cabinets in the corner, large king size bed with a black stained wooden frame, black bookshelf filled with books.  One large wall covered in what I could best describe as a massive smart board - so big that it stretched across the entire wall - neatly organized computer desktop on display.  The walls were simply white as was the white carpet under our feet.

Logan shut the door behind him, gesturing to the back of the door.  A long full length mirror hung from the back of it, and he waved a hand at it.

Ollie didn't say a word, simply tossing the stone at the glass.

I gasped, hand instinctively reaching forward to try and desperately catch the stone.  But I was too late, and I winced in horror, waiting for the inevitable sound of shattering glass -

...

And it didn't come.

It was like something from Alice in Wonderland, the glass... not breaking, but it was as like Ollie had tossed the stone into water, ripples sliding across the mirror.

I blinked in confusion to see no stone, nor shattered glass.

How -

"Come on, Vee," Ollie said, grabbing my hand and dragging me to the mirror.  "Don't forget to hold your breath."

"Wait Ollie wait - "

It was too late, and somehow this seven year old kid was strong enough to drag me through the mirror.

I gasped at the surprising cold of the mirror, barely remembering Ollie's last minute suggestion of not breathing.

We... we were traveling down a small hallway of periwinkle tinted silver metal, the odd metal appearing liquid, but turning solid under my feet.  Ollie continued to pull me along, walking quickly and purposely to the end of the hallway, where a rectangle of bright light awaited us.

I didn't even have a chance to get anxious before we were on the other side of the light, gasping for air and blinking - trying to get my bearings.

When the spots came out of my vision, I could see that were in the middle of a... large field.  And in the center of this field was a little cottage like house, surrounded by colorful flowers, plants - all of which were neatly behind a little white fence.

"Come on, Vee," Ollie said, dragging me towards the little wooden cottage.  White smoke - white smoke? - puffed out of the chimney, and I blinked in confusion, trying to process this... it - it was so much -

And then Ollie and I were at the door, and Ollie was knocking, and I was just a shaking anxious mess.  Everything was happening so fast, I just needed a minute to just - just -

Ollie didn't even wait for anyone to come to the door, barging right in.

"Wait Ollie - Oliver!" I whisper yelled, hesitating momentarily before chasing after him.  "Ollie, I don't think we should just barge right..." I trailed off at the sound of laughter coming from the room on my right and I peeked inside before seeing Ollie's arms wrapped around some unidentifiable person in a periwinkle cloak.

"Off to the back, love.  If you want, you can go talk to the nymphs - they always enjoy your company - while I have a chat with your brother here," the person said and Ollie quickly disappeared without another word, leaving me alone with this stranger.

"Um," I stammered.  "Are you Fairy God...Mother?" I hesitated.

The person finally swung to face me and I couldn't help gasping.

They had bright white hair and brown eyes, currently covered in sparkly gold eye shadow.  They also had white dodie-like sparkles on the top of their cheeks along with tiny gold stars.  They were wearing sparkly gold shirt with a pink bowtie and a pair of white skinny jeans.

"Oh, yes," they said, quickly waving their hand and the cloak somehow unbuttoned itself, flying to perch on a hook on the wall.  "Why hello there, Virgil.  How lovely it is to meet you at last - Roman has said so much about you."

"Uh - "

"Oh, and she/her pronouns please lovely," Fairy Godmother added quickly.  "I am gender fluid, but I usually use she/her pronouns, love," she explained with a small, but genuine, smile.

"H-How d-do you know m-me?" I squeaked out, a bit stunned and still trying to process... everything.  The key, the whole mirror thing, meeting Fairy Godmother -

"Oh, oh that simply won't do," she said, swinging around as walking over a white glittery cabinet.

As I stood there - stunned and confused - I finally talking myself into taking a look around.

It was small and simple, for the most part.  White walls, white couch with gold embellishments.  A coffee table sat in the center of the room with a teapot and some tea cups stacked on top.  The room was very neat and organized and it actually reminded me a lot of Logan's room.  But... it was so extra, I couldn't help the place reminding me of Roman's room -

"Here ya go, love," she said, holding a small glass cup out to me, filled with a seafoam green liquid inside.  "For your nerves, dearie" she said.

I took the glass from her, but didn't drink it.  "Um, you know I'm Anxiety, right? I'm always... like this."

"Well of course, love," she said.  "But this should help you relax a bit - and give you a clearer headspace, that's all."

I glanced again at the bubbly liquid, apprehensive.

"Go on now, love," she waved a hand at me.  "The sooner you drink that, the soon we can get on to the important stuff."

"Important stuff?"

Fairy Godmother settled on the couch, leaning forward and pouring herself a cup of tea.  She waved a hand at the drink, expectantly.

What was this? Was it really what she said it was? What if it was some drug to knock me out? What if she intended on kidnapping Ollie?  What if she wanted to kidnap me?! What if Patton and Logan came searching for me and she trapped us all! What if she -

What am I thinking? This is Fairy Godmother.  Why would she even want to do any of that?

... And besides, Roman trusts her... so should I.

I winced, before downing the whole thing.

It... it didn't really taste like much of anything, surprisingly.

Fairy Godmother had her eyebrows raised at me.  "Well - you are something special, aren't you love?"

"Um, thanks," I said oddly.  Was that a compliment? I don't know, I don't know -

"Oh please, please sit, love," she said, gesturing to the other side of the couch.  "Would you like some tea?"

I settled down across from her.  I was already feeling the effects of the potion kicking in, making me less fidgety, clearing my mind.

"No, no thank you," I refused, hoping she wasn't offended.

"Right to business then, love? Alrighty," she said, waving a hand and a notepad landed on the table - pen neatly on top.  She traded her teacup for the notepad, glancing up at me.

"Fairy Godmother," I started slowly.  "Why did you bring me here?" I asked, surprised by my own forwardness.

Fairy Godmother just smiled.  "Roman talks a lot about you, love.  I've been waiting to meet you for a while now," she said simply.

"And you know about him - " I broke off, not unable to bring myself to say those horrible words out loud.

Fairy Godmother's smile faded, eyes watering as a tear landed on her cheek.  "Goodness, sorry love - yes, yes I am aware of Roman's... current state.  Such a sweet boy, he's always felt so deeply," she said quietly, sighing.  "Virgil, love, do you know why I called you here?"

"Honestly? I don't really know," I admitted, yanking my hands over my sleeves.

"Love, what do Fairy Godmother's do?" Fairy Godmother, leaned back against the arm of the sofa, eyeing me curiously.

"I'm not really sure," I admitted, not really wanting to guess wrong.

Fairy Godmother looked amused.  "They grant..." she trailed off.

"They grant wishes - oh wow," I cut myself off, realizing.  "You... brought me here... to grant a wish?"

Fairy Godmother hummed, thoughtfully.  "Yes, yes, technically you're right," she said.  "We don't grant wishes so much as gift someone with the heart's deepest desire," she explained.  "So knowing that, do you know why I brought you here?"

I sat there stunned, realizing what she was saying.

No, she - she couldn't mean that she could - that she could possibly -

"You - You can't mean that you can -"

"Yes, love," Fairy Godmother smirked.  "Your... particular wish isn't as simple as most - a little more complex than a simple 'Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo' but... yes, it's possible, love.  Not certain, not definite - but definitely possible, if you're willing to try."

Oh my gosh.

"There is a way to bring Roman back."
