Part 11- Minho
I really didn't know what to think of her possible becoming a runner. If she did, I'd see her more often, I'd probably ask to run with her a few days. But on the other hand, it's dangerous, what if she runs into a griever? Or what if she gets lost?
I'll go ask Newt, I thought. I started walking towards the homestead to find him, only to remember what happened earlier and be crushed by a wave of guilt.
Maybe I'll ask Fry. I headed towards the kitchen to find him.
"Hey Fry" I started raiding the fridge.
"Minho, I hope you aren't looking for a midnight snack" He came up behind me.
I glanced out the window to see faint stars starting to show up in the sky, "Shuck, it gets dark fast here. But I was actually here to ask you something"
"And what is that something?" He crossed his arms.
"Should I, or should I not, let Gray be a runner?"
"Well aren't you the keeper of the runners? You should know what to do"
I opened my mouth to respond, but nothing came out. "Well, I think she's cut out for it but I don't want her to get hurt"
"I think I see a connection" Fry smirked
"It's not like that" I groaned. Even though it kind of was.
"It must be something like that. You don't care if Ben goes out everyday, but you are worried about Grace"
"Well maybe it's just because she's a girl. The only girl."
"You don't sound so sure"
I gave him a glare, "well should she, or should she not be a runner?"
"I should!" I heard a yell from outside the kitchen. Fry and I turned to see Gray outside a window. She waved and smiled, then ran around to the door.
"I should be a runner. I've got the speed, don't I?" She continued as she walked through the door.
"Well I wouldn't know, I've never seen you run. I have seen you fail miserably at pull ups" I smiled and she playfully shoved me.
"Hey just because I don't have arm strength, doesn't mean I don't have leg strength"
"She's got a point. Maybe watch her run before you decide not to make her a runner" Frypan winked and left the kitchen.
"You heard the man, give me another chance" Gray showed her bright smile.
"Alright alright, tomorrow after I get back from running" I gave in.
Gray smiled even bigger, before giving me a quick hug and leaving to her hut for the night.
I watched her leave, not fully realizing just how much I was grinning like an idiot. I shook the smile away, then grabbed a quick snack before heading to the homestead.
...
It was Greenie day, but as usual I'd have to wait till dinner to meet the kid.
I ran through the passageways. Right, left, right, right, I would write down observations occasionally, and slice Ivy so I won't get lost.
I turned a corner and sliced a thing of ivy down from the wall, giving it a small glance before continuing. And before slowing down.
I backed up to the place I took the ivy from, and stared at the bare wall behind it.
It was blank.
Sure most of the walls are blank, but this was was smooth. No bumps, no cracks. It was polished perfectly.
I walked to the opposite wall of the passageway, and moved the ivy to the side.
World in Catastrophe, Killzone Experiment Department
I'd seen those everywhere, but just then Id noticed the wall around it was smooth and polished, just like the wall was on the other side.
I walked back over the the smooth wall, it looked like it should have words, but there weren't any. At least, none that I could see.
I wrote it in my notebook and kept running, occasionally checking and finding more smooth spots.
...
I got back to the glade, just to be immediately greeted by Grace.
"Hello Minho" she exclaimed enthusiastically. "You ready to make me a runner?"
I shrugged, too out of breath for words.
"Oh that's right, here I brought you water"
I smiled and gladly took the water bottle, then drank the entire thing before continuing.
"So, how do we want to go about this?" I asked.
"I don't know, you're the keeper"
"Alright alright, how about we start with-,"
"Minho!" Alby yelled as he ran over to us "we are having a small gathering"
"Why? What for?" Grace asked as I walked over to Alby.
"Gally got in a fight with one of the slicers, both got pretty beat up but we gotta decide who's fault it is" Alby shrugged and kept walking.
"Why would Gally get in a fight with anyone?" Grace asked, speed-walking to keep up with Alby's and my long strides.
"That's what we are going to find out"
