Part 1- Grace

I felt myself rushing upwards before I even opened my eyes.
I woke up inside an old, rusty, elevator looking box. There were crates holding supplies everywhere. I felt the room lifting up.

My breaths were getting heavy as I took everything in, as I realized I couldn't remember, and as I struggled to my feet. It was dark and difficult to see. I ran my hands along the walls and ceiling, looking for a way out. My breaths were quickening by the second.

How did I get in here? Why can't I remember?
Question after question ran through my head.

After I finishing scanning the walls and ceiling, I turned in a slow circle, examining all the crates. Then the small elevator I was in hit the top and the force threw me to the floor.

The ceiling started to open, letting bright sunlight into the box. I scooted backwards on my hands and feet as I shielded my eyes from the bright light. A few figures cut through the light and one jumped down. They walked toward me, then stopped and stared for a second, his eyes glanced between my hair and my eyes. After a few seconds, he held out his hand.

"The names Gally, welcome to the glade" he said, pulling me up. He lifted me out of the box and as soon as I got to my feet up there, I was pushed back to the ground. A bunch of boys were surrounding me, yelling comments and asking questions.

"Alright, give her some space, boys" a deep voice said. The boys backed away and an older boy walked up to me. He looked me up and down, then stared at my eyes.

"I'm Nick. This is your new home" he said, not breaking eye contact. He looked mesmerized.

Later that day, I got dinner from a guy named Frypan and I sat down at an empty table. I hadn't talked to anyone yet, I was still trying to comprehend everything.

"Hey Greenie" a voice came from behind me. I looked back to see a grinning Asian guy and he sat down next to me.

"Hi" I said, smiling up at him.

"I'm Minho" he held out his hand.

I nodded and took his hand, "Grace"

I started eating my food but I could feel his eyes burning on me. I looked at him.
"Why are you staring at me like that?Do I have something on my face?" I snapped.

"No, it's-," his eyes flickered down at the table, then met mine again, "it's your eyes."

I looked at him, confused. "What about my eyes?"

"Well, One is a nice green" he started.

I nodded, urging him to continue.

"And The other one is blue" he finished.

"They are different colors?" I asked.

Minho nodded, "it looks shucking neat" he turned to his food and we both continued eating.

"Mind if I join?" a British voice came from above me.
I glanced up to see a tall blonde boy, "you remember your name?" He asked as he sat down across from me.

I nodded, "I'm Grace, what's your name?"

"The names Newt, Greenie. How you liking the glade?"

I shrugged. "It's not terrible. I just wish I could remember"

Minho and Newt both nodded in agreement.
"It's hard not having a past. But you'll get used to it" Minho nudged my arm.

I sighed, "yeah I guess so. But we gotta stay positive" I smiled at the two boys, "life doesn't get better if we mope around" the boys smiled and agreed.

"You know, your eyes-," Newt started

"Are different colors, yeah I know. Minho told me" I cut him off.

Newt smiled and nodded, "They are pretty"

I felt myself blush slightly, "thanks"

The next day I got a tour and most everything was explained, including the fact that I was the only girl who's been sent up during the fourteen months they've been here.

The third day, I starting working.

"Gracy, You can go with the builders first. Follow me." Newt, offered. I smiled, I liked when he called me Gracy. It seems more casual.
We walked over to a small hut that was being built.

"Gally" Newt called, "come meet the greenie. She's gonna work with you today"
A tall, skinny, black haired boy walked up to them. His eyes were bright blue, but the center around the pupil was a deep green.

"Hey Greenie. You ready to build?" The boy Who I assumed was Gally said.

"I think so" I laughed, "not sure if I've ever built before so we'll see how this goes"

"So greenie, what's your name?" Gally asked.

"Grace" I said as I hammered boards together.

"you're getting pretty good at this, Grace" he said, "maybe I'll get you as a builder" Gally smiled, it looked slightly out of place on his stony face, but it made me smile back.

"I still have lots of jobs, you know. This is only my first one." I responded.

"First times a charm, isn't it?" He laughed.

...

Later, after lunch, I took a break. My mind was still spinning with everything I've learned. I headed to the Deadheads and climbed a tree to think and listen. Just being out in nature cleared my mind and helped me think. And being a builder was more tiring than I thought. My arms are not super strong, And building is a lot of arm work. Maybe it's not the job for me.

My thoughts were cut off when I heard a stick snap beneath someone's feet. I glanced down to see Gally.

"Grace!" He called, "Shuck, Grace, where are you? We gotta get back to work?" He was looking everywhere except for up. I decided to help him out and I let out a whistle and grinned down at him. He glanced up at me and a smile spread across his face, "I knew you were in here." He ran to the tree I was on and started climbing. He only got halfway to where I was before stopping.

"Man this is tiring. How'd you get up there?" He said, then he proceeded to climb and eventually made it to the branch right below me. "What are you doing out here? Are you okay?" He asked

I nodded, "yeah I'm fine, I guess. I just came up here to think. I'm still getting used to the no memory thing, and the fact that we are stuck in a maze, and the grievers that I saw the other night. Those are terrifying." I chuckled, "I guess I'm not entirely fine. But I'm close enough. Let's get back to work" i finished as I made my way down the tree.

Gally followed after me, "it's fine that you feel like that. First few days are always scary. You'll figure it out" he said. Then the branch he put his foot on snapped and he fell the last few feet of the tree.

"Oh shuck! Gally are you okay?" I said, half laughing as I ran over to him. The Glader slang was comfortable on my tongue.

"Yup, I'm fine" he said,  grimacing.

I shook my head as I helped him to his feet.

"You couldve chosen a lower branch to sit on" he said,

"You couldve chosen a stronger branch to step on" I replied.

"Alright Grace, enough of that attitude" he chuckled, "let's get you back to the Glade. We haven't finished building the hut"

"What's the hut for, anyway?" I asked.

"Well, your the only girl. We better give you some privacy" he answered.
I nodded and smiled as we head back to the glade.

...

At dinner, we ate with Newt and Minho. Both were really nice. And both were runners so I only ever saw them at dinner. They answered as many questions as a could.

Well, Newt answered them. Minho just gave snarky remarks, giving me something to laugh about.

"So, Grace? Can I call you Gracy? Gray? Grace Face?" Minho asked.

I shrugged, "I'm fine with whatever" I answered, then I glanced at Newt, "Newt already calls me Gracy"

"So you wouldn't mind me calling you slinthead? Or shuck face?" Minho teased.

I laughed and rolled my eyes, "you know what I mean"

After that, Newt and Minho were my best friends. And Gally was almost like my brother. Maybe the Glade wouldn't be so bad after all.
