Chapter 12: The Date
I huff nervously as I tug at the collar of my shirt. It's too casual for a date. And I told Arin that. But he said that Dan wasn't a big fan of dressing up for dates and that he'd prefer this shirt to a fancier one. But I still feel like I need to change and that Arin will suddenly recall something about Dan that will change his opinion on his previous statement.
"Arin, are you sure that this shirt—" I begin for the thousandth time.
"My God, (Y/N)!" Arin sighs, running a hand through his long, smooth hair. "For the millionth time, Dan likes casual dates! He'll probably be wearing something like this too! Besides, even though you're not wearing particularly fancy clothes, you still look beautiful! Dan will think so too, all right?"
I smile bashfully. Arin's compliments always mean a lot, since he's not one to sugarcoat.
Arin's defenses fall a little, my smile making him smile. It's awesome how someone's positive emotions are enough to brighten Arin up as well.
He walks up to me and grabs me by the shoulders, shaking me a little. "You're going to be fine. No, great. Just let your true self show. Dan won't refuse the real you. Trust me. Your personality is something that other people envy."
My bashful smile gets wider. "Thanks, Arin," I say, wrapping my arms around my brother.
Arin hugs back. "Anytime. Happy to save my sis from a panic attack. You get really gassy when that happens."
I roll my eyes, pulling away. "You're one to talk, mister," I huff, poking Arin in the stomach.
Arin whines and backs away from me. "Meanie!"
I chuckle at my adult child of a brother. I steal a glance at the clock that's on Arin's cable box.
It's exactly 7:00.
I'm about to start panicking that Dan's not gonna show up when the doorbell rings.
I go to answer the door, but Arin blocks me with his arm. "Hold your horses. Let me talk to him first."
I sigh in annoyance but hang back nonetheless.
Arin opens the door, and sure enough, Dan is standing there. He's also got very casual clothes on, just like Arin said he would. I blush a little in embarrassment, since I was being stubborn for nothing. "Hey, Arin! Is (Y/N) around?" he asks, fluffing his hair up a little with his hand. Damn. He knows that I like it when his hair is the size of Markiplier's ego. He must've heard me talk to Arin about that at some point, since I bring up how much I like his fluffy hair a lot.
Arin nods, leaning against the doorframe with a smirk. "Yeah, she's around. So, what are you two planning on doing, exactly?"
"Dinner, and maybe take a walk after? I don't know, wherever the night takes us, I guess," Dan responds, shrugging.
"Are you guys gonna kiss~? Are you gonna shower each other with compliments~? Or are you guys gonna f—" Arin begins, but Dan cuts him off.
"Whoa, easy, there, Arin!" Dan gasps, blushing a bit.
I decide that this is my time to save Dan's life. "Okaayyyy, Arin!" I say, rushing up to the door and shoving him out of the way. "That's enough."
Arin giggles. He ceases his immature behavior and says, "Okay, okay. You two have fun." He then shoves me out of his house and shuts the door right after.
Dan looks down at me and laughs a bit. "Hi."
"Hey." I laugh along with him. "I'm sorry about Arin. He's a bit immature sometimes."
"Oh, I know," Dan says as we begin to walk to his car that's parked in our driveway. "You should hear him on Game Grumps." He rolls his eyes. I feel like doing the same, since I completely forgot that Dan works with Arin almost every day. But I resist. "Stuff of that nature are his go-to jokes." We get to his car, and he opens the passenger side's door for me with a guilty chuckle. "Granted, they're mine too, but, you know..."
"You know how to restrain yourself," I say, smiling as thanks as I get into the car.
"Exactly. I was looking for an excuse, so thanks for that," Dan giggles as he shuts the passenger door.
I laugh a bit too as he makes his way around to the other side of the car. He gets into the driver's side and shuts the door behind him. He turns to me and asks, "So, where does my lovely date want to go for dinner?"
I smile shyly. "I don't really care." Suddenly, what I've been craving for the longest time pops into my head. "But Applebee's sounds nice. I could go for some burgers."
Dan smiles at me and turns his key into the ignition. "Applebee's it is, then, darling."
I smile as Dan begins to drive us to the restaurant known as Applebee's.
***
"No! You didn't!" I laugh as I take a bite out of the burger I got at Applebee's.
"I did, though! Hell, it was a stupid idea, but at least it makes a good story!" Dan giggles as he eats his salad.
"I can't believe you wrestled a freaking alligator..," I mumble. "How are you still alive? You look like you're made out of pipe cleaners!"
"I don't know!" Dan says, waving his arms around dramatically. "I really don't! But hey, I was high! Don't judge me too hard! I didn't have any idea what I was doing!"
I bite my lip softly, a question eating at me. But it may be a little too personal, so I restrain myself.
But Dan notices my expression. "Hey, what's wrong?" he asks, tilting his head to the side in a concerned manner.
"I just...I have a question, but I feel that it's too personal to ask..," I reply, averting my gaze.
"I bet it's not as bad as you're making it sound," Dan says with a soft smile. "Shoot."
"Do you still...smoke weed?" I blurt out. I hope not. Drugs are never good.
To my surprise, Dan laughs. He shakes his head after. "No, no, no. I decided that it was taking over my life and that I needed to stop, so I haven't smoked pot in years."
Aw. I'm proud of him for being able to overcome his want to smoke weed. "Wow, that's great! I'm happy for you, Dan!" I smile.
"Boy, someone sure can get corny!" Dan teases, a smirk on his face.
I huff and cross my arms. "Well I'm sorry that I wanted to congratulate you..," I pout jokingly.
Dan laughs, eating a bit more of his salad. He then pushes his plate to the side, obviously done eating.
I do the same, since my stomach can only hold so much. "Want me to flag over the waiter for the check?" I ask.
Dan nods. "Yes, please."
I do just that, and before I know it, we've paid (Dan insisted that he paid for me, and I can't refuse someone like him) and are in his car again.
Dan begins to drive, and I assume that he's taking me home.
But by the route he's taking, that doesn't seem to be the case.
So I ask, "So, Danny, where are we going now?"
A small smirk appears on Dan's face. "You'll see~" he says smoothly.
"I really don't like that look," I say with a small giggle. "What are you planning? Are you gonna hold me hostage somewhere?"
Dan laughs a bit too. "No! Not only is that completely messed up, but Arin would have my head. No, I'm gonna be doing something way better than that."
"Killing me?" I suggest teasingly.
"Jesus Christ! Your mind goes to some dark places!" Dan says with a laugh. "Get the ideas of murder and kidnapping out of your mind. Where I'm bringing you to is a place that people who date would bring each other."
My curiosity levels increase. "All right." And then I watch the passing scenery out my window.
Another beautiful sunset. Just like the one yesterday.
I'm too busy marveling at it to notice that Dan has parked the car. "We're here!" he says, snapping me out of my trance.
I look around, and we're at the local farm. Now, this one is different from most farms. This farm has ice cream, and you get to pet all the animals that they have. I guess Dan kinda inferred that I love animals when I insisted on petting a couple's dog at the beach yesterday.
What a perfect place.
"Oh my God! This is awesome, Dan!" I say with a smile as I turn to him.
Dan smiles also. "I knew you'd like this. Come on! We've got cows to pet!"
And then, in a flash, Dan takes his key out of his car's ignition and gets out of his car. He bounces impatiently, waiting for me to get out.
I laugh and get out of the car rather quickly. I shut the door behind me, and once I'm done, Dan smiles and begins to run to the entrance to the part that lets you pet the farm animals.
I sigh, rolling my eyes at his childishness with a smile on my face. But I follow anyways.
***
After petting various animals, Dan drives me back to Arin's place. The car ride doesn't last long enough, because before I know it, we're parked in front of Arin's house.
"I'll walk you in," Dan says with a smile as he takes his key out of the car's ignition.
I nod, smiling as I get out of the car, Dan doing the same.
After locking his car, Dan and I walk up to the door.
Once we get there, I raise my hand to ring the doorbell.
But Dan clears his throat awkwardly, so I return my hand to my side and turn towards him.
"I had a really great time tonight," Dan says quietly, smiling at me.
I smile back. "I did too. We should do it again."
Dan nods. "We should." He then begins to lean in.
Um, yes please. I lean in also.
Our lips are a few centimeters apart now. But before we can close the gap between us...
The door opens.
We fly away from each other, looking at who opened said door.
Of course, it's Arin. Man, he has really great timing. By the artificial smile on his face, you can tell he interrupted us on purpose, unlike at the beach, where he looked genuinely terrified. "Hey, guys," he says, trying to sound as normal as possible. "How was your date?"
Dan answers, desperately trying to collect himself. "U-um...it was really f-fun," he gets out.
"Y-yeah!" I agree. "Th-thanks for asking, Arin."
"Anytime!" Arin says stiffly. "Danny, would you wanna come in and stay a while?"
"U-uh...n-no, that's okay. I-I'll see you guys s-sometime soon," Dan responds, hurriedly walking to his car in embarrassment.
Arin exhales. "Thank God I stopped you two from kissing..," he says quietly as he watches Dan drive away.
I frown. "But Arin...I wanted to—"
"But you're not going to on my watch!" he says, guiding me inside and shutting the door behind me.
"But yesterday you said you'd butt out!" I whine.
"I tried to restrain myself!" Arin whines back. "But I don't have the strength for that!"
That's when Suzy walks in. "What's all the whining about in here?" she asks.
"Arin purposely interrupted me and Dan when we were about to kiss!" I say.
"Arin!" Suzy scolds.
"Dan shall never touch my sister!" Arin says, holding me close to him.
"Arinnn!" I whine, attempting to push him off. "Get offf!"
"Never!" Arin says, smiling a bit at how childish we are.
"Oh, how was the date, by the way?" Suzy questions. "Do you see you and Dan becoming a thing?"
"It went good!" I say. "So, yeah, I think this has the potential to go somewhere. He's so nice, funny, hot..."
"Ew! Did not need to hear that, (Y/N)!" Arin squeals, releasing me as his hands fly up to his ears.
Just to make Arin mad, I take his hands off his ears and whisper, "And his voice is the sexiest thing I've ever heard~"
"AHHH!" Arin screams, covering my mouth with his hand. "STOP!"
Suzy giggles, and I do the same through Arin's hand. Arin studies me, and when I'm quiet, he hesitantly uncovers my mouth.
I open my mouth to say another thing about Dan, but I'm cut off by Arin's phone going off from inside his sweater's pocket. He takes it out, turns it on, and reads what I'm assuming is a text. He then smirks and returns his phone back to his pocket.
"What is it?" I ask, trying to grab Arin's phone from inside his sweater's pocket.
Arin smacks my hand away. "It's nothing, sis," he says, his smirk unchanging.
"Doesn't seem like nothing," I say, trying again to grab Arin's phone.
Arin grabs both my wrists. "Stop, (Y/N). You'll find out soon enough, okay?"
I have no idea what he means by that, but I sigh and say "okay" anyway.
Arin releases me, and my mind wanders to what Arin could be hiding from me.
But I eventually let it go, because, like he said...
I'll find out soon enough.
