Chapter 1: An Invitation

"Nope, nope, nope," I mumble to myself, smacking my forehead with my palm. I sigh and backspace everything I had written for my job application (you had to write out an application for this one). There's no way I'm gonna land a job if I talk like a preschooler. I need my words to be big, that way the boss will think I'm smarter. I also need to say how good my work ethic is; bosses go crazy over that sort of stuff.

I look up at the ceiling (I do that when I think), trying to decide what to write.

I get ripped from my thoughts by my phone ringing.

I look on my coffee table, and there's my phone. Blasting my Panic! At the Disco ringtone.

I look at the contact name, and it's Arin who's calling. Yep. A-R-I-N. Arin Hanson. His name is spelt weird, I know.

My brother. My brother that I hardly ever talk to nowadays.

We used to be best buddies. But my big bro moved to California.

That was years ago. I haven't seen him since.

I smile, happy that I have someone to distract me from my application. I pick up the phone and say, "Heya, Hanson."

Even though I can't see Arin, I know he's smiling. "'Sup, other Hanson."

Aw, he remembers how we used to greet each other.

"So, what's up?" I ask. "You hardly ever call me anymore."

"Hey, don't me seem like the negligent older brother!" he whines. "You don't call me either!"

Damn. Arin has always had a way of stumping me in the comeback department.

I sigh. "Fair point. But what's up, Arin?"

Again, I can't see him, but I'm 100% sure that he's smiling. "Well, I want you to come visit me in Glendale. I was going to invite you earlier, but I either got caught up with work or forgot."

I'm about to respond, when...

"Arin, who are you talking to?" I hear a distant voice ask Arin. The voice is slightly high and smooth. All in all, it's very attractive.

"My sister," Arin replies. "Remember? I told you about her?"

"Ooooh," the voice says. "(Y/N), right?"

"Mhm," Arin says. "Now shoo, Dan. You're interrupting our conversation. And being slightly annoying."

The dude named Dan scoffs. "Well, excuse me for coming in to give you some Sour Patch Kids."

Arin goes silent. I love how he's talking to his friend like I'm not there. Then he goes, "...Dan?"

"NO," Dan says. "They're mine now. Too bad you couldn't keep your big fucking mouth shut."

"Wow, Arin," I say. "If you were nice, you would've gotten Sour Patch Kids. But now, you just get a bag of sadness. You blew your chance."

I must've been on speaker phone, because Dan says before Arin can respond, "You should never trust a man with a streak in his hair, (Y/N). They blow everything. Not just their chances to get Sour Patch Kids."

Arin sighs. "Oh, fuck off."

"Aw, I love you too," Dan says. "I'll be leaving now. Raiding your fridge and whatnot. Bye, (Y/N)."

"Bye," I say to Dan. Then I ask Arin, "So, you made a new friend?"

How come I haven't heard about him?

"Yep. Dan's also my colleague. We're the Game Grumps," Arin says.

I still haven't watched the Game Grumps. Which is weird, considering that my brother is the host of the channel. But eh. I have other stuff to do.

"Ah," I say. "Good choice on a best friend. He seems pretty chill."

"He is," Arin says. "Now, what do you think about visiting me? Maybe you can meet Dan too."

I actually really wanna meet Dan. He seems like a cool person, and I'm curious to see what he looks like. If his looks are as attractive as his voice, then he's gonna he hot as fuck. I also wanna see Arin too.

I smile. "I'd love to visit you, Arin."

"Great! Um...you can just come at your earliest convenience," Arin says.

"Cool. I'll call you when I have a flight booked," I say.

   "All right! See ya, Hanson."

   "Adios, brother of mine."

***

A few weeks have passed, and I'm on a plane. A magical structure that can transport you to places super far away from you.

I have my headphones on, listening to some music. Music gives me life. I'm not even joking. I swear I go through withdrawals when I'm not listening to some form of music.

Right as I take my headphones off, the pilot comes on the intercom thing.

"Welcome to Glendale, everybody. We'll be landing now." (I dunno if Florida airports have direct flights to Glendale but that's just pretend they do.)

I smile, knowing I'll get to see my brother soon.

So, the plane lands after a little bit, I get a rental car, and I drive to the address Arin sent me. It takes kind of a long time, but thanks to Hamilton, the car ride goes by a lot faster.

I pull up to what I think is Arin's house, according to his text and my GPS, and get all excited inside.

I get to see my big bro!

I get out of the car, shutting the door behind me. I skip up to the front door of Arin's house with my luggage and knock on it.

Somebody answers, but it's not Arin that does.

I go red.

This dude is so attractive.

He's tall as hell, has curly hair that falls slightly above his shoulders, has a teeny tiny beard, and looks pretty built, from where I'm standing.

"H-hi," I say. "I'm looking for Arin Hanson. This is his house, r-right?"

The man smiles, nearly making me melt. "Yeah, this is his house. Did he invite you or something? I just wanna make sure you're not some creepy fan that got his address."

His voice sounds familiar...

I shake my head. "No. I'm (Y/N) Hanson. His sister."

The man looks like a lightbulb went off in his head. "Oh! (Y/N)! I talked to you, remember? On the phone with Arin?"

A lightbulb goes off in my head too. "So, you're Dan?" I ask, amazed at how beautiful he is.

Dan nods. "Indeed." He holds out his hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you, (Y/N)."

I smile and take it. "Likewise, Dan."

Dan then motions me inside. "Come in, please. Arin and I are playing Mega Man, so try not to let his rage explode your eardrums."

I giggle and walk inside, seeing Arin sitting at a TV set with his head in his hands.

I set my luggage down and clear my throat. A declaration that I exist.

Arin looks up at me, and his face lights up immediately. "(Y/N)!" he yells, getting up and racing over to me. He hugs me tight.

I hug him back. "Hey. I missed you, big bro."

"I missed you too! I've been talking about you so much that Dan's head is probably gonna explode!"

Arin and I pull apart as Dan nods. "Definitely. He just never runs out of compliments about you." He looks me up and down for a second. "And I can see why."

I go red. I just got complimented by a hardcore hottie—!

I pull Arin aside, quickly telling Dan that I need to talk to my brother privately.

"What is it, (Y/N)?" Arin whispers.

"So, you know Dan?" I ask quietly.

Arin rolls his eyes. "Yeah."

"He's hot as fuck."

Arin gasps. "Has my little sis got a crush?"

Thankfully, Arin still said that quietly.

"...Maybe..."
