Chapter 28 - Dreamland
I can't think about anything but Seth.
I open my eyes to find Seth gone, but for some reason I'm still smiling. The only thing I hear is my intense heartbeat slowly calming down. I walk back to the house with the wind blowing through my hair, across my face and around my body. I fling my arms out and let the frosty morning air hit me as if I'm absolutely untouchable. It's like nothing can hurt me anymore.
As I reach the door, I see Nikki and Alicia waiting in the front yard, still in their elaborate evening gowns. I think they've noticed me because they immediately stop talking as I walk past. Their icy gaze feels hot on the back of my neck but I don't even turn to look back at them, hoping this makes them as angry as possible.
After I find Bayley, Xavier and the rest of the gang, we say goodbye to Renee and hop into the minivan. It turns out Dean hasn't woken up, and when he does, he'll probably be hungover.
"Boy, that was one hell of a night," comments Xavier, as he starts the engine and drives us away. I glance towards Bayley, who's sitting beside me, and instantly shudder at the thought of Aaron being able to tempt her back and get his way again. As I turn back to my window though, my mind is overtaken with sweet memories of this morning and I can't help but smile.
"You can say that again," cries Big E. "I can't remember a darn thing that happened." Xavier nods in agreement.
"Don't worry. You didn't miss much. Oh, wait..." Kofi's voice trails off, as if he's thinking about something. "Yeah, there were a few things."
My heart stops in my throat. I'm pretending to be half asleep so I can't even tell if Kofi is looking at me. I cross my toes and pray that he isn't talking about-
"The kiss!" yells Xavier, and we all turn to face him, even me. "Yeah, I saw that too."
My heart rate speeds up tenfold.
"Oh yeah, that was cute," says Kofi. "Can't believe it took Jonathan this long to propose to Eva. But that was a sweet moment."
And I'm back to normal.
I breathe a sigh of relief. Also, Jonathan and Eva Marie? Who even gives a shit?
The conversation finally dies down and I can finally get some real sleep. After a while, we reach a service station.
"Okay, breakfast stop!" calls Xavier, and everyone drags themselves sleepily out of the bus. As I try to leave though, Kofi grabs my hand and pulls me back inside.
"Nuh-uh," he says, closing the van when everyone else has gone. "We gotta talk."
I know exactly what this is, and I can only be glad that he didn't bring this up in front of anyone else. "You saw, didn't you?"
"Yep," he said. "I mean, most people were too off-their-face to notice, but some of the people who did see...well..."
I raise an eyebrow. "Are you talking about...Nikki?"
"Sister, that's exactly who I'm talking about!" Kofi grimances. "You know what she's like about Seth."
"I don't understand," I cry. "She's got a boyfriend."
"Technically, you've got a husband," he says, to which I shoot him a look. "Sorry. I know it's different with you guys now."
"Kofi, I don't even know anymore," I reply honestly. "Mikaze is basically through with me. And as for Nikki..."
"You should have seen her. As soon as you guys....err, you know, her face went red, and she just instantly phoned someone and left the room. Also, this morning as you were getting in the van, she gave you the weirdest smirk. Something's not right."
I shake my head and try to breathe. As much as I wanna cuss and scream and rip Nikki's dumb face off, I restrain myself and thank Kofi for telling me all this. I also make him promise not to tell anyone what he saw.
As everyone else starts coming back into the van and I look out of the window once more, all I can hear are the three words someone said to me this morning: I love you. At that point, I realise that nothing else matters, nothing else can get at me or ruin my day. I'm where I want to be.
