Chapter 16 - The Mud Course
"Ready...go!" Cass is the first one to start, and we all have to enter at 30 second intervals. The first job is to crawl under a low net whilst trying not to sink into the mud, and I'm sure Cass would be racing through it, if it wasn't for his body weight. I'm not sure that hunky guys like him were built for these kind of courses.
"Oh my god!" squeals Carmella from the side of the course. "You're sinking into the mud, babe!" The rest of us laugh as she says this.
Next is Enzo. Before he gets into the mud, he does one of those stupid dances he does on RAW until Liv and Bayley have had enough and pretty much push him in. He's pretty skinny and agile, so he does alright, squirming his way through the net and somehow managing to get up and run through the tyres. He's almost catching up with Cass.
"That doesn't mean you're winning!" cries Liv, and next she enters. She screams as her body hits the mud, and the rest of us start cheering her on as she manages to go move quickly through the first net.
"Damn, she's good," comments Kofi, to which Sheamus replies, "Yeah, but that's cheating. She said she's done this like, a million times before."
Next it's my turn. I hold my breath as my body touches the wet, warm mud. It feels so icky and I instantly regret coming to do this, but hey, it's all in the challenge. I get on all fours to try to crawl my way under the net, but I can't help the fact that my knees are slowly sinking into the mud.
"Ohhhh God!" I cry, as the boys behind me and Carmella scream encouragement.
I finally manage to make it through the net, my pink hair muddy and sticking to my body. I can feel the mud sinking into my old trainers, and it feels horrible, yet great to know that everyone around me is in the same boat.
I can see Liv catching up to Enzo in front of me, and Bayley not too far off, but I'm absolutely nowhere near any of them. I finally drag my body to standing and try and make my way through the tyres, both feet in and out of each one, but I almost lose balance.
"Careful," I hear a voice in my head say to me as I pick up the pace again and head for the monkey bars.
Oh shit. I realise that if you fall off these, there's no way to pick up from where you left off, so you'd have to go back to the beginning. There are only 7 though, and I reckon I'm fairly competent with monkey bars, so I climb onto the podium and grab the first monkey bar.
"Hang in there, Sasha!" cries Carmella. I suspect that everyone has now entered the course.. I manage to move through two more, but I feel my muddy, sweaty hands about to slide off the metal of the bar I'm holding onto.
As I move onto the next one, my long hair swishes in front of me and I'm wishing I tied it up. My hair is unrecognisable now; it's barely pink and mostly brown, since it's covered in mud. In fact, it's reminding me of my natural hair colour.
Oh shit. Now it's reminding me of that night in the airport with Seth, where I 'told' him that my hair wasn't naturally pink. I guess my true colours are really showing now. God, why did I have to start thinking about Seth when I was having so much fun?
"AAHH, Sasha!" screams Carmella from the side as one of my hands slip from the monkey bar in front of me. Thankfully my other hand doesn't fully let go of the monkey bar behind me, so I've still got some means of staying in the game.
"Aarrgghh," I groan as I try and hold on with all the power left in me. I clutch my fingers around the metal of the bar tighter and tighter until I can feel my own nails digging into my hand. I can hear people behind me catching up.
I need to move.
Somehow, I find enough power to swing myself onto the next bar, and I block out all the thoughts and memories of Seth that are flooding into my mind as I power through the next 3 monkey bars in under 10 seconds.
"Whooo!" cheers Carmella from the side as she sees me do this. Xavier Woods behind me has just fallen down from the second monkey bar and has to start again.
I don't even have the energy to stand, and everything is slowly turning into a bit of a blur. Thankfully I don't need to see anything for the next part, because it's a tunnel. I get down on my hands and knees and feel myself slowly sink into the mud again before I enter the darkness.
I'm holding my breath because it stinks. I exhale sharply and I feel it echo back to me.
"I'm a Boss. I can do this," I say, feeling determined but disgusted at the same time as the watery mud that has filled up in the tunnel wraps around my fingers. I can't see the light so clearly yet, and I feel like as I'm crawling on, the tunnel is getting tighter and tighter, wrapping itself around me. I can feel my hair sticking to the top of the tunnel, but for some reason all my hair seems to do is remind me of Seth, and I wish I had a stupid hairband so I could stop thinking about that arrogant idiot. I can feel the tunnel getting tighter and tighter, with less and less air to breathe which means that I'm slowly suffocating and I'm going to to get stuck in here before I ever reach the end...
"Hey!" calls Xavier Woods from the entrance of the tunnel. "You came in here ages ago, man."
I'm so embarrassed. There's nothing wrong with this tunnel. "Oh crap," I call back to him. "I guess I got distracted."
"It's cool," he replies, and I feel him getting in the tunnel too. "Now, I'll give you ten seconds to get ahead of me, and you'd better goddamn use it!"
That's all I need to hear for me to crawl my way through the tunnel at top speed.
There's a few more challenges such as rope climbing and Jacobs ladder, and by the time I get to the part where I have to just run to the end of the course, I absolutely want to drop dead. I can see Bayley just finishing in front of me, and waiting by the finish line are Cass, Enzo and Liv, who are as drenched in mud as I am and cheering the rest of us on.
I'm running so fast that as one trainer touches the mud, the other is already ahead of it.
As I run past the finish line, my hair and clothes clinging to my body with mud, the pretty blonde instructor reads out my time of 9 minutes and 51 seconds.
"That's a pretty good time," says Cass. "You would have done better if you didn't slow down in that tunnel."
What can I say to that?
The rest of the guys finish the course one by one. Sheamus especially looks weird with mud all over him, just cause he's naturally so pale. As we're drying off in the hot sun before we use the showers, I find Bayley sitting on a bench, so I go over to her.
"That was more fun than I expected it to be," I say, taking a seat next to her. I hear a squelch as I sit down. "Oh, boy. I think some mud got into my pants."
Bayley laughs, but I can tell she's a bit nervous. She's holding a phone in her hands.
"What's wrong?" I ask her.
"Aaron wants to meet now," she says. "I was gonna tell him where I am but I don't know if I can talk to him now. Everyone's here and...I don't want to make it awkward."
"I'm sure no one will have a problem," I say. "I'll explain the situation. But for God's sake girl, just talk to him and find out why he's being so distant."
The instructor is calling us over. I walk to the rest of the group, leaving Bayley at the bench, and I can't help but feel like if Bayley's gonna talk to Aaron, then I somehow need to make it up to Mikaze.
