Chapter 6 Jailbreak

Jack thought it was a good idea to solve Romeo's mystery. The key word here is thought. He thinks it is a good idea until Davey tells him all that it entails. Maybe, it isn't such a good idea after all.

"Jack, do you have any idea of what you are getting into? This is crazy. Tampering with an investigation of the law is serious business. You need someone with real legal experience on your side, my friend," Davey tries to convince Jack for the third time at school that day. Jack tilts his head thinking about it for a second.

"Youse right. We'se shouldn't," Jack says after a moment and Davey's eyes go wide.

"What do you mean? You have been dead set on solving the case for Romeo all day and now you just give up. In the short time that I have known you, I know that you don't just give up," Davey states and Jack shrugs his shoulders. "Do you have another idea?" Davey asks and Jack tilts his head.

"Ain't tellin youse," He says before walking down the hallway, dodging frantic highschoolers right and left. Davey tries to chase after him and nearly runs into Kid Blink and Race on his way to his next class. Flavi is not far behind the two boys.

"Whoa, Davey! What's da rush?" Race asks as Davey brushes by. Davey gestures to Jack and Race shrugs. "Don't know what's wrong wid him. Seemed fine dis morning." Race, Blink, and Flavi start to move on, but Davey grabs his shoulder.

"Something's up with him, Race. He has a new idea about Romeo and his case, but he won't tell me," Davey explains and Race and Blink exchange looks.

"Probably means he doesn't think you'll like it an he doesn't want to get you involved," Blink says, looking at Davey. "Which means its something that we will have fun wid," Blink finishes and he quickly high fives with Race. Davey rolls his eyes and looks at Flavi.

"Beats me. I'm Flavi DiAngelo, by da way," Flavi introduces herself, extending her hand to Davey.

"David Jacobs, but the boys call me Davey. Nice to meet you," says Davey and the two shake hands.

"Dots! Ya comin? We ain't got all day ta get ta class," Race shouts from halfway down the hallway.

"See ya around!" Flavi says as she hurries off after the boys. Davey turns and starts heading into class. He sits down and remembers that he has this class with Jack when he notices Jack, across the room, flirting with some girl. Not just any girl, it was the girl from Medda's show awhile back. Davey makes his way across the room and nudges Jack.

"Ey, Davey. Ya met dis gem before?" Jack asks and the girl glares at Jack.

"I'm glad you refer to me as a piece of rock. Normal people don't talk to rocks," The girl says sarcastically and Jack smirks at Davey. He's not going to give up that easily.

"I'se don't talk ta fancy rocks just girls dat are as a pretty as them," Jack responds and Davey puts his head in his hand. The girl turns to Davey and smiles at him.

"You have fun with him. And tell him that if he is going to flirt with people, he needs to figure out what flirting actually is," The girl says to Davey before taking off across the classroom in the direction of the pencil sharpener. Davey turns to see Jack, smirking and watching her retreating form walk away.

"Ain't she something else?" Jack exclaims aloud and Davey shakes his head in disbelief. He pulls Jack towards their seats and practically shoves the lovestruck teenager into a chair. Sitting down next to him, Davey notices Jack staring off at Katherine. He pulls his composition notebook out from his pile of things and drops in onto the table with a loud SLAP right in front of Jack.  Jack jumps and glares at Davey. "What was dat for?"

"Stop staring. She already knows you like her. That poor girl doesn't need you to wave it on a banner more than you already do," Davey answers and Jack looks at Davey with a challenging look in his eye.

"She's got a name, ya know. It's Katherine. One of the most beautiful names in da woirld," Jack informs Davey, practically drooling as he stares at Katherine across the room. Her clothes are all neatly pressed and her bangs dangle in front of her forehead while her curls roll down her shirt. Davey rolls his eyes and arranges the rest of his piles with his largest books on the bottom and his smallest books on the top.

"Pay attention, Kelly. Class is going to start and then you are going to be hosed if you keep drooling over her like a bulldog," Davey admonishes while straightening his pile perfectly with his fingers. Jack shakes his head as Mrs. Bromsby starts talking about some newspaper tycoon by the name of Joseph Pulitzer that Jack could care less about. The class drags on and Jack remembers Romeo and that whole dilemma. Maybe focusing on his real problems would help him forget about his failed attempts at romance. Katherine had plenty of other boys who would be dying to fall in love with her. That Jack was sure of. Grabbing a piece of paper from his blue one inch three ring binder, Jack pretends to be taking notes when he is really drawing Romeo sitting in a prison cell. Jack is unsure of how to approach this case, but if they do it right, there may be no case to solve at all. He has never solved any kind of a mystery. Well, except for the one with the missing car keys. The culprits had turned out to be Race and Albert, who were mad that Jack had said no to buying McDonald's again for dinner for the third night in a row back when the boys were younger. Jack chuckles under his breath as he brainstorms about how to even get into the police station where Romeo was being held prisoner. Davey looks over at him as he continues sketching in miniscule details that are not important to anyone else but him. Before Jack even knows what is happening, the bell for class to dismiss rings and students shuffle out of the classroom. Jack tucks away his drawing and Mrs. Bromsby walks up to him.

"Mr. Kelly? I need to talk to you," She demands and Jack inwardly groans. He is sooo going to be in trouble. What he is planning and drawing is not exactly legal and the fact that he has drawings of what he is planning to do in his binder is another nail in his coffin. The coffin that seems to have more nails in it everyday that Jack wakes up in the morning. In any last hope to save himself from whatever is coming, Jack looks her in the eye just to pay her the respect that she requires. A smile lights up her face and Jack is suddenly very confused. "I love that you are thinking outside of the box when it comes to your notes! Visual notes are absolutely wonderful! I commend you for doing that!! Thank you for working hard!! Extra credit points for you this week!" Jack smiles at the woman as he moves towards the door.

"Thanks, Mrs. Bromsby. I'se gotta get ta class. Tanks for da compliment," Jack responds before walking out of the classroom and back into the busy high school hallway.

Time Skip- provided to you by Jeremy Jordan belting out Santa Fe. (That's what I'm listening to while I write this chapter.)

"Visual notes, huh?" Flavi chuckles as she and Jack get ready to open the coffee shop. Jack chuckles softly as he works furiously on his Pre-Calculus homework. Flavi had thought the visual notes story was pretty hilarious. "So, what were you really drawing? A girl?" Flavi presses and Jack chuckles as he finishes another problem.

"Wouldn't youse like ta know?" Jack responds and continues working. Claire enters the coffee shop and leans up against the counter next to where Jack is doing his homework.

"Hey, Jack!! Wow!! Already going on the homework? I admire a hard working boy who tries to work on his homework! You got a hot date tonight that you don't want homework standing in your way for? Would you want to go out? I haven't gone out with anyone in a solid three weeks. Especially since this last jerk I dated started dating some other chick who claims is the hottest girl he has ever met and..." Claire babbles on and Flavi finally slams a bag of coffee on the table.

"Claire? Would you do us all a wonderful favor?" Flavi asks as Jack ignores the situation.

"Oh anything to make my wonderful coworkers happy!" Claire chirps back and Jack groans.

"Please shut up," Flavi says and Claire pouts.  She crosses her arms and turns around to face Jack.

"Jack, you never answered my question," She responds and Flavi shoots her a look that could kill.

"I'se busy tonight, Claire," Jack responds and Claire's facial expression snaps from hopeful to mopey. Flavi scoots up next to Jack on the counter.

"So based on that previous conversation, you're not going on a date. What's going on?" Flavi asks and Jack keeps working. "Jack, you never work on homework this earlier. Whatevah it is must be important to ya."

"We'se got ta make some headway on dat case of Romeo's," Jack responds as he picks up his History binder. The picture he drew earlier slips out and falls onto the floor. Flavi picks it up and gasps at what she sees.

"Jack Kelly! Please tell me the boys know about this," Flavi gasps as she sees what Jack has drawn on the page.

"They'se knows he is at da station, but they don't know what's coming tonight," Jack says nonchalantly. Flavi cocks her head and crosses her arms. Jack does absolutely nothing to let her in on what is happening later on. Work drags on for hours as hardly anyone comes to the coffee shop. Jack manages to finish his homework and when closing time finishes, he bolts out into the dark streets of Manhattan. Without even saying goodbye to his coworkers, Jack jumps in his car and drives off. His boss is never there, so Jack is sure that the owner of the coffee shop would not mind that he was in a hurry. He drives back to the apartment in a record time. Jack jumps out of his car and runs up to the apartment.

"Ey! Jacky's home!! Youse looks like youse in a hurry," Race says and Jack shoots Race a goofy look.

"Okay, Higgins! Since ya so happy, how do ya feel about a jailbreak?" Jack asks and Race laughs loudly.

"Youse kidding? Skits, Blink, listen ta dis gag Jacky just tried to pull on us," Race laughs and Jack crosses his arms, remaining serious. Race's laugh disappears as well as the smirk on his face. "Youse wasn't kidding? Oh. Well. Uh, shoah. Whatevah ya want ta do, Cowboy." Skittery and Blink both look at Jack like he has lost his mind.

"What are you thinkin, Jack? Ya want everybody ta wind up in jail? Cuz dat's what gonna happen. We'se can't break Romeo out of a police station," Blink states and Skittery nods.

"Yea, we'se all bound for real jail if dat happens. Da Newsies ain't done nothing dat grand scale successfully," says Skittery and Jack looks at his boys.

"Look I know it sounds bad an it looks pretty crazy, but I'se tinks we can do it if we play our cards right," Jack says and Crutchy lumbers over to him. He gently socks Jack in the arm to alert him of his presence. Jack looks to his right and Crutchy smiles up at him.

"I'se can't do much, but I'se might be able ta be da distraction," Crutchy says and Jack rubs his chin in thought.

"Dat's not a bad idea. Ask about ya family or make up some story dat ya need help wid," Jack suggests and Crutchy sighs.

"I'se ain't da best liar sometimes, Jack. An youse knows dat. What if da cop picks up on it?" Crutchy worries and Jack thinks for a moment.

"Do it for Romeo, Crutch. I'se knows dis ain't right, but think of Romeo, sitting all alone in the jail cell all by himself while the cops try ta figure out if he's just an innocent kid or a murderer," Jack advises and Crutchy shrugs.

"So, when are we'se doing dis?" Albert asks and Race slaps the back of his head.

"Ya nitwit! We'se already said we'se doing this tonight!" Race reprimands and Albert elbows him back while rubbing his now sore head. Mush pushes his way in between the two boys before anything serious starts to happen. Jack sends a nod of thanks in his direction.

"So, once Crutchy wid Mush an Henry, some of us will hide out ta make sure dat da officers are actually distracted. Da rest of us will stand guard around da station while two people look for da keys. Den those two people will unlock the door holding Romeo prisoner an we will replace the keys. Five boys will go wid Romeo an we'se will sneak him back here or ta Medda's if we'se bein followed," Jack instructs and the boys nod. The boys quickly jump into the various vehicles and they drive off to the police station. Parking on different streets so the police do not see the large number of cars and question what is going on, the boys all walk down the streets together towards the police station. Crutchy, Mush and Henry all walk up to the police station together. Mush gathers the three boys up in a huddle.

"Ey! I knows we'se all really nervous. Distracting da police ain't something dat a person does for fun, but we'se got ta do it if we'se evah gonna hear da truth. We'se got ta do it for Romeo," Mush encourages and Crutchy nods.

"Seize the day!" He calls out softly putting his hand in the middle and the other two boys follow. The three of them high five and walk into the police station prepared to put their dramatic tales into motion.  Once they walk in, the other boys split up to do their various tasks. Jack stands behind the door to the police station and notices Henry using dramatic arm movements to tell some story about something that would occupy the police's attention for quite some time. He watches as the police officer presses a button on his desk and starts talking into it. Jack moves away from the door just as most of the officers in the station come bustling out with the three boys. Mush and Henry in tears and Crutchy is trying to reassure them that the resolution to whatever tall tale they had made up is going to be just fine. The officers allow the three boys to sit in the back of a vehicle and Jack checks to make sure no one is watching before slipping into the police station. It is late at night so all of the office people that stayed at the station to do their jobs are not present. Jack sneaks into the office with Race and Specs right behind him. Fingering the thin metal bobby pins in his pocket, Jack gently inserts them into a lock on the front desk.

"If we'se gets busted, I'se blaming youse," says Racetrack softly and Jack rolls his eyes as he starts to rotate the various bobby pins inside the key hole. A couple turns later and the drawer opens with a satisfying click. Specs points out a lone key and Race runs over to Romeo's cell. Race knocks softly on the door and calls out softly, "Romeo?'

"Shh," hisses Jack, "if anyone finds us in here."

"Specs, toss me the key!" Race calls out a little too loudly which rewarded him with shushing from both of the other boys. Specs tosses Race the key and Race quickly fiddles with the lock until the door swings open.  A terrified looking Romeo stands on the other side. Race and Romeo quickly embrace and Jack notices a skylight in the roof. Pulling up a chair underneath, Jack stands on top of it and reaches for Romeo.

"Oh thank youse, Jacky Boy. Ain't nobody evah treated me like da true Romeo," Romeo exclaims and suddenly, an office door bangs open. Jack shoves Romeo out to the roof top. "Hey!" Romeo protests and Jack jumps out after him.

"What is goin on here?" The police chief Wiesel snarls when he sees the Race and Specs.

"Uh, we'se was just leavin," Specs says, but Race interrupts him.

"No, we'se was actually comin ta share a tip dat we'se saw last night," Race says, nudging Specs.

"Maybe you'se can tell me da tip about why my skylight is open!" Wiesel snarls angrily and Jack gently pushes Romeo away from the skylight.

"Ey! Don't try ta weasel ya way outta da job, Weasel. Heard ya busted some real good murderer last week. Killed five people for ya caught im," Race says, walking up closer to Wiesel.

"Oh yea. One of da biggest busts the department has seen in a real long time," says Wiesel.

"So, since's you'se bein such a weasel about dis tip. Why don't ya check it out?" Race asks and Wiesel rolls his eyes.

"Da name is Wiesel. How many times do I'se gotta tell you kids dat? Thought I told you that last time I had to save my nephews," Weasel groans and Race becomes shocked.

"I'se believes it was da other way around, Weasel. Your nephews were trying ta kill us," Race shouts and Jack cringes. At least, Race is being a distraction, but he does not have to bring up the latest gambling incident. Race, being the brilliant person that he is, thought that he could beat the Delancey's in poker. Jack had been fully confident in his abilities to win, which Racetrack managed to do, but he was not confident in Race's abilities to keep the gloating to a minimum.

"They said that you cheated them at poker!" Weasel roars and Romeo groans.

"Da day Race chooses to stop gambling is gonna be da best day of my life," Romeo says and Jack shushes him. Unfortunately, Weasel hears it all the way inside the station.

"Someone is on my roof!" Weasel yells and Jack moves even further away from the skylight. How hard can it be to shake a chief of police? Weasel stands on the chair and pokes his head up through the now open skylight. "Is that a Kelly I see? With my prisoner?' He yells and Jack groans. Apparently it is very hard to shake a chief of police when he is hot on the trail of a case. Blink and Jojo hear some kind of a commotion on the roof.

"Albert!" Blink shouts and Jojo punches him gently in the stomach.

"Keep it down! Do ya want half o New York to know what we'se up to?" Jojo hisses and Blink smirks.

"Maybe I'se do. So all of da girls will finally see what a great person I am. I'se will have more dates than I know what to do wid," Blink responds and Albert comes over with the rope.

"What's all da fuss about?" He asks as he hands it over to Blink. Jack's head peeks over the side of the roof and Blink tosses him the rope. The three boys go back to arguing.

"Ya coulda been faster wid da rope, Al! Den Blink ovah here wouldn't a bragged about all dose girls in his dreams," Jojo scolds and Albert rolls his eyes.

"Why was I'se da one holding the rope when I'se ain't standin near da building? I was watching da street!" Albert protests, but Blink points out a pretty dark haired girl with gorgeous dark skin across the way.

"Oh really. Ya sure ya weren't watching da pretty goil across da street," Blink adds and Albert turns bright red.

"Well, youse would a done da same ting, ya know!" yells Albert and the three boys are too busy arguing over who would have been staring at the girl to hear Romeo.

"Incoming!" Romeo shouts, but the three boys do not know that Romeo is coming down until he falls on top of all three of them.

"ROMEO!!!" Shout Blink, Albert, and Jojo.

"Dat's my handsome name. Don't wear it out!" Romeo replies and continues to sit on top of the three boy pile. Blink throws a large punch at Albert's jaw and Albert jerks causing Romeo to fall off of the pile. However, the four boys have no idea what is about to happen on top of the roof. Weasel climbs on top of the roof and starts to move towards Jack.

"Don't make me call my nephews, Kelly," Weasel threatens and Jack starts to move towards the edge of the roof. Weasel reaches for his cell phone and Race yells from inside the station,

"Oh my word!! Dat poor lady just got mugged!" Weasel turns his head and Jack snatches hold of the rope and repels down to the ground. He lands on his feet and yanks the rope away from the roof. Jack almost has the whole rope in his hands when suddenly, something stops it. Or rather someone.

"Ain't ya gonna help dat lady across da street? She's gettin mugged real good. Oh no! He just knocked her out!" Jack plays along with Race's game just to confuse Weasel. Blink stands in front of Romeo until Jack catches his gaze and nods in the direction that they parked the cars. Jack tosses Blink his keys and Blink, Albert, Jojo, and Romeo take off towards the cars. "Go! Get outta here!" He whisper yells to the other boys and they start scrambling towards the cars.

"Youse gonna be okay, Jack?" Bumlets asks and Jack nods. He tugs on the rope again only to see Weasel's large meaty hands clasping to the other end.

"Weasel, ya ain't gonna let criminals run ya city, are ya now?" Jack asks trying anything and everything to distract the chief of police. Usually, he wasn't this relentless which could mean that he knew that the boys had an agenda. Jack tugs harder at the rope and Weasel starts pulling it up, bringing Jack closer to him.

"Once I catch you and throw you behind bars, Kelly, there will be no escaping for you," Weasel growls and Jack simply lets go of the rope. When Weasel realizes what Jack has done, he lets out an angry roar of frustration. Race pipes up again,

"Oh! So, dat's what da chief of police gets trained ta do...turn into an angry T-Rex in his spare time!" Jack hears the laughter of Specs and Race float out from the open skylight. Leave it to Race to make any terrifying situation turn out well. Suddenly, a scream comes from inside the station. Weasel's eyes go wide and Jack cocks his head in curiosity.

"Dere something in dere dat we'se don't know about, Weasel?" Jack asks and Weasel's jaw tightens.

"Higgins! Stop playin the track from the murder that your little friend is accused of committing!" Weasel shouts and the screams stop.

"What do ya have in dere from da murder?" Jack asks and Specs, who hears Jack's question, says,

"Compelling evidence for the murder case, Jack! Dese recordings are the statements of da people dat were at da scene of da crime!" Weasel laughs nastily and says,

"Compelling evidence dat you can't have. You are not solving this case, Kelly! I won't let ya with an inch of the evidence board!" Jack tugs at the zipper on his blue zipper hoodie.

"He didn't do it!" Jack protests and Weasel chuckles darkly.

"Not what the evidence says," He replies and Jack thinks quickly. Race and Specs peek out the station window when they hear silence, just to make sure that Weasel is not hurting Jack. The two boys exchange a look and Specs slips the tape with the statements into his pocket. Once he does, Race pulls his car keys from his pockets and the two boys run out of the station, grabbing Jack as they run towards the cars. Jack follows them and they hear Weasel shout at them as they run. Once they jump into Race's car, Specs pulls the tape out of his pocket.

"I got da tape. Now we'se can hear what is really going on," Specs says and Jack grins. The boys' joy is cut short when they hear the sound of a police siren and a police cruiser comes into view.

"Race! Start da car and get us outta here!" Jack yells. Race turns on the car, throws it into drive and pulls a hard right hand brake turn. The police cruiser comes up to the tail of Race's car and Race presses on the gas.

"Watch ya speed, Race!  Youse goin 100!" Specs yelps and Race ignores him, yanking on the hand brake again. The car spins around a hairpin corner and Weasel is still on their tale.

"We'se gotta lose im, Racer. Or else, we'se dead meat," Jack warns. Race peels out of the turn and swerves wildly in and out of traffic. Pulling a couple more wild turns, Race spins the car out and into an open road.

"I'se did it!" Race cheers and starts to turn the car around. Once he does, Weasel's police car with its flashing lights and sirens comes into view. Race floors the gas pedal and the car spins wildly. Weasel swings his police cruiser so it blocks the only way out. Race continues down the road and pulls the hand brake, desperately hoping that some fancy trick will shake the chief of police from their tracks. Jack and Specs watch nervously as Weasel rides up on the little red car's bumper. Suddenly, a loud bang sounds as Weasel rams the bumper. Jack and Specs jolt forward, bumping into the black leather seats in front of them. Glass shatters everywhere around them as the windows break into a million pieces.

"RACE!!" Jack yells as he watches his brother's head smack against the black dashboard. Something whacks Jack over the head from behind and his world goes black.

AN:/ Hello! Welcome back to this story that I have neglected to update for the last two and a half months. Goodness that was way too long. I apologize for the cliffhanger, but I'm not really that sorry. I love cliffhangers. I hope you guys liked this chapter better than chapter 5. I honestly was not a huge fan of that chapter. This one seemed better with more things happening and the boys actually accomplished something. Please tell me what you guys think and what you think would make this story better. Comments are really nice, but votes will tell me just as much if you don't feel like leaving a comment! I feel like this story has sort of gone downhill, but maybe it hasn't and that's just me. Please tell me whether you agree or disagree. I feel like I started out really well and it just has not been going well. This chapter was better, so we will see what happens. Seriously, I will take any kinds of thoughts. If you want to criticize, please keep it constructive if you can. I enjoyed writing this chapter and I hope all of you had enjoyed it so far. Please realize that even though I do not update my books super regularly, they are not being neglected. I am very aware of what has been updated recently and what hasn't. I will try my best to update some things that have not been updated in awhile. Anyways, thank you so much for reading, commenting or voting! I really love the support. Enjoy this chapter and thanks for taking the time to stick with this story!! See you around, friends!!
