Chapter 3 Saturday Night Live!

The rest of the week passes by at a rapid pace for the boys. David and Sarah seem to be maneuvering the halls of the school well, and the Delanceys seem to be leaving everyone alone for now. Saturday night comes and Jack could not be more excited. He had told the boys at breakfast the next morning what they were going to be doing on Saturday night. Jack had just finished work and was heading out to the car that Race usually drives, when he hears Flavi.

"So you've got big plans tonight, right?" She asks as she walks over. Jack smiles and replies with,

"Ya bet I do, we'se gonna have so much fun down dere." Jack sighs contentedly, but is broken out of his revelry when Flavi shoves him towards toward the car.

"Ya better get going if yer gonna make it on time," She says and Jack climbs into the car. He starts it and is reminded of the wonderful fact that he is not driving a fifteen passenger van.  Jack loves his van, but most of the time, it is the smaller things in life that make Jack happy. He waves at Flavi as he drives away and she waves back as she runs in the direction of Brooklyn. Jack drives back to the apartment and pulls open the apartment door. A marble flies at his face and Jack catches it before it can do any damage.

"Snipeshooter!" Jack scolds, already knowing who the culprit is. Snipeshooter walks out of the other room with a guilty look on his face. Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne is blaring in the background and Race is doing some serious air guitar on the back of the couch that the boys for some reason moved to the center of the living room. Crutchy sits in a kitchen chair and watches the whole scene. The boys are dancing and shouting to the song. "How long has dis been goin on?" Jack asks his younger brother and Crutchy shrugs.

"I'se dunno. Forevah it seems like," Crutchy answers. Jack looks at the clock on the wall above the kitchen table.

"We'se needs ta get goin!" Jack exclaims and turns to the boys. He shouts over the music to tell the boys to get ready.

"Try someting else, dey's ain't gonna hear ya," Crutchy says. Jack looks around for a second and then spots Race's phone plugged into the speaker. He picks up and quickly shuts the music off.

"KELLY! YA KILLJOY!!!!" Race shouts as though the music is still playing.

"YA DEAF, HIGGINS!!!" Jack shouts back in an equally loud voice.

"WHAT?"

"I SAID YA DEAF!!"

"WHAT?"

"Nevah mind," Jack groans, gently slapping his face into his palm. He starts pushing boys towards the door and handing out car keys. The boys all jump into a vehicle of some kind. Jack starts his van and the boys pile in. Crutchy hops into the passenger seat next to Jack.

"So, Jack, is Davey comin tonight?" Crutchy asks and Jack shoots him a smile.

"Yea, but I'se knows what you'se really askin," Jack states and he changes his voice to sound like Crutchy, "Is Sarah comin ta night, Cowboy?" Crutchy's eyes widen and he gently smacks Jack in the arm. Jack laughs as he turns onto the road and Crutchy mutters something. "What was dat, Crutchy? I'se didn't quite catch it." Crutchy groans and repeats himself,

"I hate dat ya knows me so well, Kelly!" Jack laughs again as he turns onto a busy street heading toward the Bowery. He pulls around and parks in the back of the theatre. The boys jump and Jack stands in front of the back door, keeping the boys from going inside.

"Hey, fellas! We'se sittin in da balcony, so's behave. No throwin tings on anybody," Jack yells to the boys, desperately trying to get them pay attention to them. Most of them are and Jack knows who that those who were not paying attention will get help from those who did. He opens the back door and the boys move up to the balcony. Medda tackles Jack into a hug and Jack smiles a huge smile.

"Glad to see you could come, kid!" Miss Medda says excitedly as she hugs Jack.

"I'se glad we could make it!" Jack replies as he spots Davey and his siblings walk in. "Some new kids from school are here, so I'se will check ya afta da show?"

"Of course, I have someone for you to meet then. Don't forget!" Medda calls as Jack hurries over to the Jacobs siblings. Davey looks nervous at the amount of people in the theatre. Les breaks away from his older siblings and runs to Jack.

"Hi, Jack! I'm so excited to see you!" He exclaims excitedly as he bounces on his heels.

"Heya, kid," Jack greets and Les talks his ear off as the pair walks over to the older two. "Heya, Davey. Ya like da joint?" He asks and Davey looks around nervously.

"I'm not exactly sure yet, they're performing My Fair Lady ?" Davey asks while looking around.

"Yea, it'll be good. Da shows here are always da best. We'se sittin in da balcony if youse wants ta join us," Jack says, noticing how both Sarah and Davey are looking a little overwhelmed. He takes the Jacobs kids up to the balcony with him. Crutchy smiles at Sarah and pats the seat next to him the moment he sees her. Sarah sits down and the two begin to talk quickly. Davey sits down next to Jack and asks him,

"Is this going to be appropriate for Les to watch?"

"Yea," Jack says, "I'se nevah had any problems here." Davey gives Jack a wary look. Suddenly, the lights go dim and the show begins. Miss Medda steps out to introduce the show and Jack looks over at Davey. He is staring straight at Medda with a huge look of awe on his face. Jack holds back a grin at Davey's disappointed look when Medda walks off the stage.

"She's gorgeous!" Davey says happily and Jack chuckles. "What?" Davey asks, but the music begins before Jack can answer. A young actress appears on stage with several people around her. Jack cannot help but stare at her. Something looks so familiar about her and she looks so beautiful. She plays her part as Eliza very well. Jack watches her carefully as she dances with the Cockneys, she plays the part so well. Her British street accent sounds amazing and her voice is absolutely beautiful. Then, the man named Higgins appears and Race pales considerably. He and the character, Higgins who is on the stage, have absolutely nothing in common. Race frowns as he insults the young girl and Jack loves her acting job. No one in one of Medda's  shows has captured his attention like this young actress has. Medda plays one of the fine rich ladies who is the mother to Freddie. The intermission comes all to soon and Davey had noticed that his friend had not taken his eyes off of the lead role on the stage.

"You like her, Jack?" Davey asks before he can really process what he is asking.

"What? What are ya talkin bout?" Jack replies and Davey lets out a chuckle.

"You haven't taken you eyes off of her the whole time," He answers and Jack raises an eyebrow. "You know perfectly well who I'm talking about Jack. I am awful at spotting this sort of thing, and it is blatantly obvious that you are smitten with her." Jack rolls his eyes and keeps searching for the beautiful young lady that is portraying Eliza. He needs something to hold onto of her. Jack pulls out the program and finds a blank sheet on the back cover. He sticks his pencil in it to hold his place so he can draw her once the show starts again. The boys are all dancing in their seats singing the various songs from the musical. Sarah and Crutchy are talking about Eliza and how interesting it is that Mr. Higgins thinks she can learn just to bolster his ego and social standing.

"He's very smart, but I'm not sure that it was very kind of him to do it to poor Eliza," Sarah says. "Besides, there's nothing wrong with a woman having a job even if she is self employed. " Crutchy nods his head in agreement. Race pouts as Romeo teases him about his last name.

"Mistah Higgins, sir, may's I'se have an English lesson? Apparently, I'se don't speak da way I'se should," Romeo teases him. Race starts to gently sock his younger brother and Romeo starts to squirm and try to get away.

"Oh look, Rome! He's forcin ya into it!" Jojo shouts excitedly. "Just like Higgins!" Race starts to sock every boy who is hassling him.  Elmer says,

"He's got Higgins's temper too, maybe dey's related!" Race prepares to actually soak Elmer, but fortunately for Elmer, the lights go down and the show starts. Jack pulls out his paper and the moment the young actress reappears, he begins to draw her. He captures every element of her and hums along with the music as he does. Davey's eyes flicker in between Jack's drawing and the young woman on the stage. He cannot help but notice how accurately Jack's drawing seems to capture the young woman. She has her petite arms spread wide as she stares out into the crowd, a large smile on her face and her hair piled up on her head. Jack begins to detail the young actress even more. Davey turns back to the stage and gets pulled back into the story. Jack continues to admire the actress and he signs the picture in one of the corners of the page. Davey beams at the drawing and shakes his head. He hasn't even know Jack for very long, but it is extremely obvious that he really likes Eliza or whoever the girl is in real life. The scene comes where Freddie is standing outside of Eliza's home singing to her and Jack fidgets in his seat. Davey hears him mutter under his breath,

"You'se ain't touchin er, ya nitwit. Not unless, I'se can ta tawk ta her foirst." Davey stifles a laugh at Jack's behavior. He seems to be taking this pretty seriously. When Eliza challenges him to show her of his love and they kiss, Jack sits up straight in his chair. "No!" He mutters under his breath again, "Dat ain't a stage kiss. Dat was for real." Jack fidgets in his chair again as he watches them on the stage.

"Jack, calm down! It's not like you wouldn't hold back from a real kiss versus a stage one. You would kiss your counterpart if you thought she was cute enough," Davey whispers and Jack silently slams his hands down on the arms of his chair. Davey tries to stifle a laugh before he asks, "And how would you know that it wasn't a stage kiss?" Jack begins to blush and turns away to the watch the show.

"Ya bettah just watch da show, Jacobs. Unless ya want a shinah," Jack hisses and Davey chuckles quietly. Jack never fails to be an entertaining person. Deep down, Davey is hoping that whatever kiss happened on stage wasn't a real one for Jack's sake. The older boy looks like he is about to lose his mind over the whole deal already. The show ends after awhile with no more commentary from Jack much to Davey's disappointment.

"Where are ya slippahs, Higgins?" Kid Blink asks Race loudly and Race rolls his eyes. Jack grins at Davey and says,

"I'se gonna go backstage. Medda had somebody she wanted me ta meet." Jack rushes through the crowd of people to find Medda backstage. He hopes that who Medda wants to introduce him to is the gorgeous actress that plays Eliza. Jack cannot get her out of his mind and he has to know who she is. She was important enough to him that he drew her. He has to meet her at some point. She captured his attention as an actress and Jack cannot even fathom about who she is as a person. He runs down to the backstage and one of the stage hands begin to protest. Miss Medda comes to his rescue before things can get too violent.

"Jack Kelly! You are just the man I have wanted to see," She exclaims excitedly.

"Good job! I really enjoyed dat show. Dat was probably one o da best ones yet," Jack says excitedly and Medda smiles at him.

"Oh Jack! That was nothing, kid," Medda says and Jack shakes his head in disbelief.

"Looked hard," He says and Medda looks at him.

"Says the boy who painted the backdrops that look amazingly difficult to draw," Medda replies and Jack sighs.

"Ya didn't tell me what deys was for!" Jack protests and Medda laughs.

"Stick around for awhile and I will introduce you to somebody," She says happily. Jack turns around to watch the boys and nearly runs into Davey, Sarah, Crutchy, and Les.

"Oh hey, fellas an' Sarah!" Jack says quickly and the others nod their heads. Crutchy stands next to Sarah and Jack watches as Crutchy intertwines his fingers with hers. Jack smiles as Davey gushes a little bit about how beautiful Medda is. Suddenly at the mention of her name, Medda reappears. She smiles at the small group and greets Crutchy.

"I see that Crutchy has found himself a special friend?" Medda asks, "Who's the girl?"

"Uh, dis is Sarah Jacobs," Crutchy responds and Jack snickers quietly at his little brother's nervousness. Medda shoots him a pointed glance and Jack stops snickering. Davey has not taken his eyes off of Medda.

"Miss?" Davey begins and she smiles at him.

"Medda, if you please, what's your name?" Medda asks kindly.

"I'm David Jacobs, but Jack has taken to calling me Davey over this past week."

"You've only know Jack for a week? It looks as though you two have known each other for months."

"He's fit right in Medda," Jack says with a beam on his face as he claps a hand on Davey's shoulder.  Davey chuckles softly at his friend.

"So, Jack, would you like to meet this young lady?" Medda says and Jack nods.

"Shoah, you'se can come too if ya want, Davey," Jack answers and Davey nods. Medda leads them backstage to the dressing room. Davey stares openmouthed at all of the activity going on behind the scenes. People bustle around holding wigs and costumes, scrubbing at the pound of makeup they have to wear on their faces. Jack is not phased at all by the amount of activity. He has helped out backstage before and after shows making him used to hectic activity that goes on there. Medda comes to a room at the end of the hall. She knocks on the door and a voice that sounds vaguely familiar to Jack, calls out,

"Who is it?" Medda leans close to the door and answers,

"It's Miss Medda. Katherine, I have someone that you might like to meet out here. I'm surprised I haven't introduced the two of you sooner."

"Medda, can it wait?" The voice, who Medda called Katherine, replies, "I have an article that really needs to be finished tonight and it can't wait until I get home."

"Tell you what," Medda proposes, "if you need a break, the person I want you to meet will stand right here and they will be here once you finish. Is that okay?"

"Yes, that's fine," Katherine calls from the other side of the door. Medda smiles at Jack and rolls her eyes at her actress's behavior.

"She is a wonderful girl, but she works too hard. Doing two jobs to make it on her own makes me worry about her sometimes. So, please, help her to focus on something besides writing and acting," Medda advises Jack. Jack nods his head in agreement as he leans against the wall next to the doorframe.

"I should probably get going, Jack. My family is going to be excepting us before long. See you Monday?" Davey asks and Jack nods.

"See ya Monday, Davey." He says to his new friend. Davey and Medda walk away leaving Jack alone with a closed door and a complete stranger of a girl who is working away at something on the other side. He hears the click of keyboard keys as she types away on them at a rapid fire pace. Jack is beginning to wonder who she played on the stage. Could she have been the captivatingly beautiful Eliza? Jack waits for a few more moments before he knocks on the door.

"I already said I'm busy, so you need to leave," Katherine calls from her side of the door. Jack cannot help, but roll his eyes.

"What are you busy wid?" He asks and he hears her give a groan of frustration after he asks this.

"An article, now please go. I don't really like to be bothered while I'm working," She replies, but Jack does not want to leave her alone.

"What article?" He asks and he hears her groan again.

"A blog article for the New York Sun if you must know," She says, trying to get him to leave. "Now can you leave me alone?"

"Nope, ain't dat easy. Besides I'se been standin here ten minutes an yous hasn't come out yet," He answers and she hears her mutter something under her breath. "What was dat?" He asks.

"You are impossible, why can't you just leave me alone?" She cries out and Jack chuckles.

"Meybe if yous would come out, I'se would leave, but I'se gets da feelin dat I won't want ta. Even aftah ya come out," He replies. A few moments of silence, with the exception of the sound of keyboard keys, follows. Jack gets tired of waiting and throws the door open to see the very girl who portrayed Eliza.  His eyes widen and he immediately becomes tongue tied. He recognizes the girl and she swirls around in her black swivel desk chair.

"You! You wouldn't leave me alone at the coffee shop. You're that flirtatious little coffee boy!" She exclaims out loud and Jack inwardly groans. So, that's where he had seen her before. This young woman was still in her Eliza costume, and she had not even bothered to take off her makeup before getting to work on her article.

"You'se are da most beautiful woman I'se evah seen," Jack declares and she looks at him with a pointed glare.

"Do I look like I'm in the mood to be flirted with?" She asks and shakes her head. "No, I'm not. So scoot." Jack, who was not at all oblivious to her mood, says,

"I'se tink ya needs a liddle floirtin ta happen, so's youse can get ya mind off a woirk for a while, yeah?"

"No!" She answers and turns back to her laptop. "I don't even know your name and even if I did, I don't care for flirting."

"Da name's Jack Kelly. An Medda called ya Katherine, so's I'se assumin dats your name," Jack replies. Katherine rolls her eyes at Jack.

"You are the most impossible boy I've ever met," She declares mostly to herself, but Jack cocks his head.

"Katherine's a pretty name,a real pretty name," He says and begins to reach for her wig.

"No!" Katherine shouts again, plastering her hands to her hair. Jack pouts and she groans. "I will get out of the costume as soon as I finish the article. Now, the door is open and you can walk right through it and leave." She turns back to her laptop and continues to type at a rapid pace.

"I just wanna peek so's I'se can say hi ta ya latah," Jack begs quietly. Katherine shakes her head again.

"You cannot have a peek, Mr, Kelly. The door is that way. Now have a nice evening," Katherine directs. Jack peers over her shoulder at her laptop screen and sees her name.

"Katherine Plumber, huh?"

"It's my byline."

"Oh nice," Jack says quietly as he slips the drawing of her underneath her arm. "I uh really enjoyed dat performance tonight. Stop by da coffee shop some time if ya evah need a chat."

"Well, thank you, Mr. Kelly. I will keep that in mind," She says absentmindedly as she continues working.

"Ya shoah ya don't want me ta stick around? It ain't dat late, ya know," Jack offers and Katherine turns to him, oblivious of the drawing under her elbow.

"Nope. I'm fine. You can go now, Mr. Kelly," She replies hastily.

"But, we'se hardly gotten ta know each oddah," Jack whines and Katherine points to the door.

"I will see you again, Mister Kelly. I'm sure of it," She says, pointing him to the door. Once he gets to where she can close it, she says quickly, "Good night, Mister Kelly." She slams the door and Jack can hear the sound of a lock clicking.

"Ey! Dat ain't fair, can't ya just open up for a second, please?" Jack begins to protest, but to no avail. Suddenly, his phone buzzes with texts from Race,

Racetrack: Ya comin? Da boys an I have been waitin for da last hour or so. Medda's trying to close up.

Jack: Yea, sorry got caught up in something.

Racetrack: Or a someone?

Jack: None o your beeswax, Higgins.

Racetrack: Is to my business. Besides, Crutchy's practically got himself a goil.

Jack: Don't even go dere.

Jack's texting session is rudely interrupted by someone quickly slamming him into the side of the wall.

"Ey!" Jack yelps in a hurry and then he notices who is holding him. The boy who played Freddie on the stage has Jack's collar in a death grip.

"Don't you dare touch Katherine, you understand?" The smaller boys growls at Jack and Jack shoves the smaller boy off of him. The boy stumbles a bit and his glasses slide down his nose as he does.

"I'se got a name, ya know. An you'se coulda introduced yaself before you shoved me up against da wall. I'se ain't kind o a boy," Jack protests as he readjusts the collar of his blue t-shirt.

"Oh and I'm just going to let you waltz in there and do whatever you want! Yeah, right," The shorter boy retorts and Jack is slightly offended by the shorter boy.

"Listen, I'se Jack Kelly. I'se painted backdrops here before, escaped jail once, an oddah stuff. You'se can trust me," Jack says, trying to prove himself to the shorter boy.

"You can call me Darcy," The shorter boy says sticking his hand out to Jack. Jack spits into his hand and startles a little bit when the shorter boy recoils his hand.

"What's a mattah?" Jack asks quickly and Darcy scowls at his spit infested hand.

"We don't do that where I come from," says Darcy very matter-of-factly. Jack comes up with a comeback in his mind.

"Yea, well kissin Katherine for real instead o just a stage kiss wasn't dat much cleaner, now was it?" Jack asks and Darcy lets out a groan at his comeback. Jack holds back a laugh at the other boy's frustration. "Meybe ya shouldn't force yaself on her." Jack advises and Darcy holds up a fist toward Jack's face.

"How did you know about that?" Darcy asks and Jack laughs a little bit. "It's not funny, how did you know?"

"Oh, just from da way dat you'se kissed er, you'se in love wid her. She just seems like da kind o a woman dat wants nobody ta worry bout her like ya do. She don't seem ta do romantic feelings," Jack says plainly. Darcy rolls his eyes at Jack. Who was this boy to quote his relationship status with Katherine? Suddenly, both boys are interrupted with a new voice.

"Now gentlemen, I hope this little fight you are having isn't over a girl." Both boys turn to see none other than Medda Larkson standing behind them. She exchanges a look with both boys. "I think you two could be great friends if you just look beyond your differences. Even the greatest of friends can be the complete opposite of the other person." Jack and Darcy look at each other.

"Maybe we got off on the wrong foot," Darcy says and Jack nods his head in agreement. "I'm Darcy and I play Freddie in the show you just saw."

"I'm Jack Kelly, an I play da big brother o a huge group o Manhattan boys an da artist o da backdrops," Jack says and the two shake. Maybe, he could make some new friends at the theatre.  Medda smiles and Darcy rubs his hands together.

"Well, I should probably head home," He says quickly and heads for the backdoor. "Nice to meet you, Jack! It was good to see you, Medda!"

"Bye!" Both Medda and Jack call at the exact same time.   Medda turns into Jack and asks him,

"How was she?"

"Da most fascinating goil I'se evah met. Didn't wanna see me dough." Medda laughs a bighearted laugh.

"Sounds like Katherine alright. She doesn't really enjoy having anything to do with boys. Katherine is the perfect Eliza. Say! Maybe if you helped out a little bit backstage some night, she would let you get to know her better." Jack shrugs.

"Maybe. I left someting for her dough, and she might stop by the coffee shop again."

"Just remember, Jack. Love blooms in the oddest of places and ways." Shortly after that, Jack hugs Medda and bids her goodbye. As he leaves the theatre, Medda's words in their conversation echo in his mind. He knew one thing for sure, he was beginning to fall for Katherine Plumber.

AN:/ Whew. Another chapter is done. First things first, I do not own My Fair Lady or any of the characters that are used within. If you have not seen the musical, it is amazing and you should at least read a synopsis and listen to the soundtrack. It is really good. Picture Julie Andrews as a street girl who learns the proper ways of being a lady from a stingy man and a kindhearted one and you have the musical right there. Jack is such a hopeless romantic sometimes. And what did you think of the way he and Darcy met? I figured it was kind of unique. What did you think of Katherine playing Eliza? Did it seem to fit her? I hope so. This one was very fun to write. I enjoy this story a lot. The story will begin to pick up in the next chapter, I promise. Please tell me what you think. I love feedback. This story is so fun to write and I love just the boys in general. What did you think of Sarah and Crutchy? Are they any good for each other? Something about them sounded appealing to me and I didn't want to have Sarah in love with anyone else. I'm feeling pretty sad today, so the fact that I am putting something out is extremely satisfying. Also, expect a fairly random and inexplainable oneshot in the near future. 166 reads is amazing and they haven't been out that long. 43 reads on here is amazing too! Thank you sooo much! I hope you enjoy this chapter. I had a blast writing it. Enjoy the story and see you soon, friends!
