Summary:
A young woman, seemingly ordinary, is deserted on an island that is void of life but is then confronted by a man who completely baffles her with his words and actions. He couldn't really be a demigod now, could he? There was no such thing as real gods. Or was she the one mistaken? Could she trust in his friendship after all the heartbreak and disappointment in her life?
...
The sight of the bedroom with its pulled back, ruffled sheets, the marks in the middle of the bed and the knickers left on the bed's headboard told a chilling truth.
The knickers dangling haphazardly on the bed's headboard didn't belong to her!
They belonged to another woman who had no business coming to this house. Whoever had been here had not just come to see her man.
She'd had sex with the man who Maija had trusted and believed she could love for the rest of her life!
But now those thoughts that she could trust him had been brought crashing down.
She had been betrayed in the most heinous way possible.
The young woman felt it hard to breathe as she stumbled against the footboard of the bed and gripped the wooden surface between her hands as tears slipped down her cheeks and onto her feet.
How could he have done this her? Why would he have done this to her?
A choked sob escaped Maija's throat as she stared at the knickers on the bed's headboard with a crushed heart.
What had she done to deserve this sort of heinous act when she'd, for once, wanted to make something special for Lachlan and her to eat that evening. She had come home early that evening, with her arms full of bags filled with groceries so that she could prepare a delicious meal.
What had she done to deserve the long drawn-out wait that followed once she'd finished preparing the meal? When she had expected him to have come home from work way before she had finished cooking?!
What had she done to deserve the frustration of her boyfriend not coming home from work at all, so that they could have enjoyed their meal together? Or the crushed heart when she'd eventually stomped up the stairs to the bedroom with the mind to change out of her sailor clothing (which she hadn't done upon returning home from work and had instead put an apron over them)?
What had she done to deserve the upside-down state of the bedroom, the clothing she owned searched and then thrown haphazardly around the floor of the room and even inside the bathroom (that was as upside-down as the bedroom)?
Many of the jewellery that her former boyfriend had gifted her were missing from the jewellery box.
Lachlan had either taken them to be sold in a store or he'd given them to his lover; the one he'd had sex within the bedroom shared between Maija and him!
It was another heavy blow to Maija's consciousness as she stood leaning against the legboard, feeling numb all over.
A shine near her feet made her glance at the floor filled with haphazardly thrown clothing her eyes caught sight of a shine near her feet.
It was a part of the broken mirror she had destroyed with one of her high-heeled shoes in a moment of rage at finding the evidence of her boyfriend's discursion.
The floor was glistening with the shards strewn in every direction and seemed to beckon to the woman who was as broken inside as the mirror she was staring down at.
She felt suddenly curious over what it would feel like to cut one's skin mindfully, and not by accident. Maija bent her knees, back scraping against the bed's headboard as she reached out for one of the sharp glass pieces.

The glass felt smooth and cold against her fingers as Maija eyed it for a moment, before pressing the sharp edge of it lightly against her arm, just a few centimetres above her wrist.
She dragged the sharp edge somewhat lightly against her skin and winced slightly as it stung.
Warm blood oozed out and ran a red path along her skin as it slowly cooled into a slithery red line against her tanned skin.
It was the first of many cuts that night.
Though none were deep enough to cause anything other than skin deep scars, they were deep enough to still leave a scar that would heal and fade into barely noticeable white lines.
...
When Maija finally stopped her actions and shakily pushed herself to her feet, her wrist was red with oozed blood; but she didn't care as she made her way to her bathroom where she spent the next hour cleaning the entire room to rid it of the 'filth of the man' who had betrayed her.
Afterwards, she got in the shower and spent the next hour in there, vigorously scrubbing herself from any contamination of her former boyfriend. Her own made cuts stung bitterly in tune with her aching heart, but she barely paid mind to the discomfort of the sponge cleansing over the open wounds.
When she finally got out of the shower and put on her bathrobe, she was pristine clean on the outside but inside she still felt like she was anything but; because no matter how much she tried, she couldn't rid herself of the painful memories bubbling to the surface of her mind.
No matter how many hours she spent vigorously cleaning every room of the house, riding every nook and corner of the house to rid it of the contamination of her miscreant boyfriend, she couldn't find peace of mind that night.
And when at last she fell into her bed (that she had spent the longest time ridding it of the filth of what she knew it had been subjected to earlier that day when she had been out of the house), exhausted beyond measure physically and emotionally, it still took hours for her to calm down enough to close her eyes and drift off into deep sleep.
