42: This Chapter Calls for a Big "OoF"

J. Dun

"Crazy about Kellin, Vic, Sarah, and Andy, huh?" I ask Tyler. He nods and hands me a coke. "So, we should really finish this project. My mom is only giving me an hour-"

"Right! Uhm yeah. Let's start with the decorations," He clears his throat. The schools decided to throw a Christmas- sorry, holiday party. Our entire squad signed up to do decorations. Tyler and I decided to make snowflakes.

I take a piece of paper and start folding it.

"Josh- are we friends?" Tyler asks out of nowhere.

"Y-yeah. Of course!" I say, starting to cut the paper. He nods and starts with his snowflake.

"How many do we have to make?" I ask, trying to start up a conversation. He shrugs and continues to make snowflakes.

"Why are your parents so strict? I mean, not to sound rude or anything, but they seem kinda... Uptight.

"They're fine- they just-" I sigh and put the scissors down. "A while ago, my brother was just walking to the park with his friends, when suddenly all of them were kidnapped. He was gone for three weeks. So when he was found, my parents became paranoid. We moved here because it has a lower crime rate, and they set strict rules. They don't want to go through that again and granted, I don't blame them!" I throw my arms up.

"I'm sorry- I didn't know-"

"No, you didn't-" I bury my face in my hands. "I'm sorry, it's kind of a sensitive topic, and I don't know why I even told you but- I just- I had to."

"I know," he rubs gently circles on my back. "You have to get that off your chest. I get it," he says softly. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine," I sigh.

He wraps his arms around me. "No, you're not, I know you're not," he whispers.

"Ever since that day- the day we got the call about my brother, I couldn't stop imagining it. What he must have felt. I can't stop thinking about it."

"Shh, it's okay," he pats my back softly.

Silently, we go back to making snowflakes. I start cutting a piece when our elbows touch.

"Sorry," he mumbles. I laugh and throw a glue stick at him. "Okay, point taken," he tosses the glue stick back at me.

After a finish making about fifty snowflakes, we decide to take a short break. We sit on the couch, watching a Friends rerun while drinking coke and eating Skittles. I decide to lay my head on his shoulder.

"Josh?"

"Yeah?"

"I-" he sighs and I lift my head. "I don't want this to ruin our friendship, and I know we've only known each other for four months but- I have to be honest with myself, and I understand if you don't feel the same but- I- I like you," he watches my face, worriedly.

"Tyler- I-" I find myself desperate to find words. "I'm not gay, Tyler."
