26: Ice-Cream Drama and Purple Hair

T. Joseph

"Josh?" I call when I walk into the ice-cream shop. I hear soft footsteps and Josh pokes his head out of the door.

"I'm just cleaning the fruit. You good?" He asks. I nod and walk over. He smiles and turns me around, holding a strawberry in his hand. "Open," he grins. I roll my eyes and let him feed me the strawberry. I bite down and feel the sweet taste of strawberries. Then I realize that the fruit is a bit too sweet. Juice starts spilling from my lips and I turn to the sink. I finish the strawberry and clean off.

I turn back to Josh who's gone completely crazy. He laughs until he can't even stand. I roll my eyes and throw a wet towel at him. He tosses it back into the sink and continues to wash and cut fruit.

"Hey, Josh- Do you want to- I don't know... Go to a movie later on?"

"Oh- Uhm, I can't- my parents have a strict uhm-"

"No, it's okay- maybe another time?"

"Yeah- maybe..." He clears his throat. Just when he does that the door opens and the little bell chimes. Stupid bell.

"I should- I should get that," he clears his throat and dashes out. Then I hear a soft yelp. I poke my head out the door and my eyes widen. I close the door and run to the storage area. He can't know I'm here

"Uhm, hello?" I hear Josh say, a hint of annoyance in his voice.

"I'm looking for Tyler," he grunts.

"What- Uhm..." Please don't out me, Josh. Please. "I don't think he's in yet... I don't have his phone number and the boss is out for a minute so... You can maybe... Come back later? Or- Wait, which Tyler?"

"Tyler Joseph."

"Uhm- We don't have a Tyler Joseph here. He quit a few months ago. He was a really cool kid though-"

"Forget this!" He shouts and I hear him walk away. After the door slams shut I hear Josh run into the kitchen.

"Ty? Ty, you there?" He asks. "That guy seemed fishy. And you didn't come out so I-"

"Thank you," I whisper. Josh sighs and puts his arms around me. "He- Well... Let's just say he's someone from my past, that I hoped to escape," I sigh.

"How about you stay in the back for today? I'll stay out to greet customers," Josh suggests. He helps me up. I nod hesitantly. "It's okay, you're fine," he says before walking out to greet another customer.

"Hi! I'm Awsten. Friend of TJ, I just wanted to give him this for later. Yeah, thanks!" I poke my head out and see Awsten's signature purple hair.

"Awsten?" I call. He turns around and grins. I walk out and eye Josh before walking to Awsten. "What's up?"

"It's the Grumpy Cat memorial. Just read the goddamn invite. I have like five other people to bring these to. But Josh can come too if you want," he looks at Josh. "You two should date," he whispers into my ear before bouncing out of the store.

Josh raises an eyebrow and hands me the envelope. I skim it and laugh. He wasn't kidding about this... "Hey, do you want to come? It's tomorrow at lunch, so you don't have to worry about your parents." I hand him the letter.

"A Grumpy Cat memorial, huh? Sure," he shrugs. I grin. Thank god for Awsten.

Before I can say anything else, Awsten dashes back into the store. "UH YEAH, I SURE HOPE IT DOES!" He screams before slamming the door shut and dashing down the street.

Josh and I make eye contact before bursting out into laughter.
