16: Young Love

V. Fuentes

"Are we ever going to tell them?" I ask, staring up at the ceiling, laying on my back on the bed. Kellin looks up from his book and eyes me. "I mean, about our powers."

"Why? I think we're fine the way we are," he replies thoughtfully. He puts the book down and scoots to me. "If there a reason we'd need to tell them?"

"I hate lying to them about everything. About why we can run so fast. About why we wear these gloves. About why we have to excuse ourselves to relieve electricity. I think everything would be easier if we just told them," I blurt out.

"Or, we could put them danger. Remember the story from thirty years ago? That can't happen to us- or them. Especially them. They're innocent in all of this. Even Sarah," he sighs and rests his hand on my knee. "Vic, I know why you want to tell everyone. I've felt that way too. But- I just can't bear the fact that- that could put them in danger."

I sit up, scooting even closer to him. I tuck his hair behind his ear and stare into his hazel eyes. "I know how you feel. I guess I just wished everything was easier," I purse my lips and press mine against his. I pull away slowly and place my hands on his hips. "I love you, you know that?"

He holds his hand again the nape of my neck and presses out foreheads together. "We're in this fight together, never forget that, Vic. No matter what happens, I'll always love you too," he pulls away and sighs, "I just wish that Sarah wasn't stuck in the middle of this mess. It's one thing to be born with it, but to have your life suddenly just change? It's mortifying," he shakes his head and swings his legs over the bed, standing up.

"I have to go to work, I'll see you later?" He asks. I nod and he gives me a quick peck on the lips. He leaves the room and I stand up, walking to my desk. Three pictures. One with my family. One with the whole squad, it was the day we went to the park. Right after Sarah calmed down. And the last one, Kellin and I on our first date. All of my best memories are with these people. I pick up the one with me and Kellin. It was a casual first date, not some high-end dinner. We went for a movie, then went over to the ice-cream shop, then a stroll in the park. In other words, cliche. But he didn't care. I didn't care. All that mattered is that we were with each other.

"That movie was pretty good... Huh?" He asks, trying to make small talk. I nod. "Vic, I really like you, and well, I'll be honest, I've never... Done this before," he mumbles the last part.

I pause in my tracks. "You mean you've never dated anyone before?"

"I hope you're okay with that- If not-"

"No, it's fine. We can go slow. Here, about..." I move my hand and slowly grab his. Not too tightly, he can easily slip away. He smiles softly and grips my hand.

I won't lose him. No matter what happens.

I can't.
