Hobi is the kind of person who brightens any room he walks into, even though he is the product of an affair his mother had with a student of hers. Because of the fact he lives in a small town, rumors spread fast to where both his family and him were shamed for it. In the story, he lives with his mom and his mother's husband, who is not his biological father. Both his parents resent him, so he usually spends his time outside, riding his bike all over town or at Yoongi's house. He met Yoongi during elementary school, and they got closer after finding out they lived near each other. He is deeply loyal and protective of his friend and the people he loves, which is why when Yoongi came out to him, he was supportive and made sure to stand by his friend's side if anyone tried to harm him. Both of them dreamed of leaving this small town and moving to a utopia, like New York City. When Jimin came along, he grew fond of him rather quickly, especially when he noticed how Yoongi looked at him. Sure, he had never seen two guys in love but give him a break, he's not stupid. When Yoongi is murdered out of the blue and the police do nothing, he is the first to put himself at risk to find out what happened to his friend and grant him justice.

Yoongi:

Date of birth: March 9, 1955
Age: 21 (as of 1976)
Star sign: Pisces
Nationality: American
Ethnicity: Korean-American
Social class: Working-class
Religion: Agnostic
Sexuality: Gay (closeted until his relationship with Jimin)

Yoongi always tended to have trust issues ever since his dad left. Because of that, he was raised by his mom, a loving person who taught him how to cook, clean, and raise his younger sister, leading to him eventually wanting a daughter. Which is why it hurt so much when he found out he was gay. His gay awakening happened in middle school, when one day a man in his 30s took interest in him. And the two got involved with each other in secret until Yoongi ended it due to him not wanting to give his virginity to him. Hobi never knew anything about this. However, it was around this time when he decided to come out to his best friend. In junior year of high school, a new kid moved in, Park Jimin, who he swears he instantly fell for upon first sight, yet he could never make a move on him. Thankfully, as faith would have it, in the one class they had together, they sat next to each other and clicked. Yoongi invited Jimin to sit with him and Hobi during lunch, and afterward when Hobi and Yoongi were walking to their classroom, Hobi kept teasing him, about how his red cheeks whenever their new friend was around made it so obvious that he liked him. Eventually, Yoongi decided to open up to Jimin and the possibility of being in a relationship with him. Jimin understood and told him that he would wait until he was ready for them to get together. Eventually, just as they do, Yoongi finally begins to feel like there is more to this world than just his past, he is murdered.

Jimin:

Nickname: Dove (by Yoongi)
Date of birth: October 13, 1956
Age: 20 (as of 1976)
Star sign: Libra
Nationality: American
Ethnicity: Korean-American
Social class: Working-class
Religion: Agnostic
Sexuality: Gay (closeted until his relationship with Yoongi)

Jimin came into Yoongi's life like a beacon of hope. Being the new kid is never easy, especially in a small town where you feel like everyone already knows each other and you're the odd one out. His parents had moved here due to financial issues and the fact his dad got a job there. When he befriends Yoongi and Hobi, he feels like he had found a family built on love and the shared dream of one day leaving this place together. Upon meeting Yoongi, he thought he was cool yet distant. When they were partner up in the only class they had together, that was when they first started talking. Over time, Jimin noticed how Yoongi would look at him, as well as other subtle things like how he would listen when he yapped about his dreams. Jimin is the one who took the risk first and confessed his feelings. From then on, they dated and Jimin found himself already in love even before officially dating. So when Yoongi is taken away from him, Jimin is paralyzed by grief and without thinking, he decides to help Hobi solve the case. But when Hobi is murdered too, Jimin is forced to stand on his own and with no help, try to fight for justice for his two best friends.

Once upon a time... Hobi and Yoongi had been best friends for years, supporting each other in a town that didn't accept people like them. Since it is the 1970s, being gay was taboo so when Yoongi came out to Hobi, Hobi accepted him, but like any straight guy he's like "Bro I love you but not in that way" and Yoongi chuckles and is like "I know, man." Yoongi at some point starts dating the new kid, Jimin, and the trio becomes inseparable.

Every day... They spent their days listening to records, dreaming of leaving town, you know, typical boy teenage stuff. Yoongi was like the glue that held them all together.

Until one day... Yoongi was found murdered, and his death was dismissed as a hate crime and quickly forgotten by the authorities and the papers. Somehow, he is outed, which makes the town sympathize less with his death, as they call him slurs, and basically say he deserves it for serving the devil, something like that. However, devastated and furious, Hobi refuses to let his best friend's death go unanswered, so he decides to investigate what happened to his best friend. Jimin tags along.

Because of that... Their investigation led them to unsettling secrets. Yoongi had a past he never fully shared, and one name kept surfacing: Hyunwoo, a man Yoongi once knew well. The more they uncovered, the more dangerous their search became.

Because of that... Someone started watching them. Threatening them. The closer they got to exposing the truth, the more they realized they weren't just chasing a murderer, they were being hunted by him.

Because of that... Hobi becomes the next target. One night, he was ambushed and killed by Hyunwoo, his final narration moments being: "My name is Jung Hoseok. I died on October 23, 1976."

But then finally... Jimin, now alone, was consumed by grief—but he refused to give up. With the help of unlikely allies, he continued the investigation, using everything Hobi had uncovered to track down Hyunwoo and expose the truth.

And ever since then... Jimin ensured Yoongi and Hobi didn't die in vain. The murderer was brought to justice, and though the pain never left, he found peace in knowing he fulfilled Hobi's last wish—to make sure Yoongi's story was heard, and his death wasn't forgotten.

Notes:

• The story is told in two parts: the first in Hobi's first-person perspective, and after his death, it shifts to Jimin's third-person perspective.
• Hobi's death is not known to the reader until it happens, therefore, should not be used as a plot beat
• The story ends on a bittersweet but hopeful note—Jimin survives, justice is served, and the memories of Hobi and Yoongi live on.
