Green Isn't Your Color
A/N: Mmmm yes season 4-5 jaya.
Okay, so maybe flirting with the librarian for intel was a bad idea, but how was he supposed to know she was a huge Blue Ninja fan? He could have easily evaded when she grabbed the collar of his gi and pulled him down for a kiss, but he was so gobsmacked from the action that he didn't even budge. As far as first kisses went, he was sure he left a bad impression with his mouth gaping like a fish out of water, but the fangirl didn't seem to care.
His cheeks were still flushed as he and Nya poked around the bookcases, looking for the ancient tome.
"Was it nice?" Nya asked tersely as she flipped through the books.
"Huh?" Jay asked, half hearing her from the other side of the room they were combing through.
"Never mind," she huffed, snapping a book shut and shoving it back on the shelf. Her searching continued, more aggressive than necessary.
Jay frowned, wondering what had triggered her.
"O . . . K. If searching for books is bothering you, you can meet up with the others and I will find it."
He watched as her shoulders tensed and her back went stiff. Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say.
She whipped around, anger flashing through her eyes. "Sounds good, maybe you can flirt with the librarian more and she will find the book for you!"
Jay's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
Hold up.
Time out.
Was Nya . . . jealous?
He couldn't help the sly grin that tugged at the corners of his lips and watched with increasing delight as panic flooded in Nya's eyes.
"You're jealous," he stated flatly.
"No! I-," she spluttered, crossing and uncrossing her arms nervously.
Jay wasn't one for unsolicited affection, but it seemed like the librarian did him a solid.
"You are totally jealous," he echoed, unaware that he had crossed the room until his pauldron collided into the shelves next to her. She looked furious, but the light dusting of blush on her cheeks betrayed her.
"I don't know what you are talking about. Obviously the librarian likes you and would totally help you find the book."
"Uh huh."
Nya bit her lip. It was insanely cute.
"You asked if it was nice," Jay reminded her and watched as her cheeks went from pink to red.
"Excuse me for trying to make conversation," she hissed, crossing her arms once more and mirroring his cocky stance of leaning against the bookcase.
Jay's grin flashed brightly. "You are totally jealous."
"For the last time I am not jealous!" Her voice rose in volume. They both flinched at the shushes from across the room. Library patrons studying at the tables from down the long hallway shot them a dirty look. "I'm not!" She whisper-shouted. Jay wasn't sure if she was trying to convince him or herself.
"Hmmm, was it nice?" Jay tilted his head to the side, feigning consideration, as if recalling the incident. He didn't miss the way Nya pursed her lips and clenched her fists.
"It caught me off guard, but as far as first kisses go, it was nice."
"Oh. You are able to compare first kisses?" There was a slight disappointment in her voice that Jay almost didn't pick up on, but his ego completely ignored.
"When it comes to first kisses, a lady never asks and a gentleman never tells," Jay replied matter-of-factly.
An array of emotions paraded across Nya's face. Her lips parted, as if to speak, then snapped shut into a thin line as she turned sharply on her heel and refocused on the books, haphazardly tracing her fingers over the spines.
"Did you meet a lot of fangirls at your gameshow?" she asked the books, voice low and laced with annoyance.
His breath hitched. "You watched my gameshow?" he blurted, before clenching his jaw shut, mentally kicking himself for sounding enthusiastic that she watched his show.
Either she didn't notice or didn't care. "76 episodes? That was quite a run. You must have had a lot of fangirls throw themselves at you."
"Well—"
She kept her eyes on the books as she cut him off. "Nice blazer, by the way. Did they let you keep it?"
Now it was Jay's turn to flush with embarrassment. He was simply playing a part, masking his pain, not really caring about the ostentatious outfit the producers made him wear. "No, it was company property," he uttered lamely.
"It looked good on you," she murmured before catching herself. "I mean, it worked well for the show." She crouched down, busying herself with another row of books.
Jay kept his arms crossed as he watched her scrounge through the shelves. He chewed the inside of his mouth, debating his next play. "As far as kisses go, it didn't make my top three."
Nya tensed, her eyes darting towards him for a split second before returning to the task of searching for the book that seemed impossible to find. She briefly wondered if the librarian had sent them on a wild goose chase, cackling in the back room with co-works at her and Jay's feeble attempts to find said book. All part of her master plan to hook up with the Blue Ninja and have a grand ol' laugh at Samurai X.
"I'm sure librarian-fangirl would love to have another chance at getting into your top three," she spat, finding interest in a mahogany colored book with delicate gold trim.
"Probably," he agreed and Nya shot her head up, locking eyes with him. He neglected the hurt warring over her face. His arm reached up and rubbed the back of his neck as he blatantly yawned. "It's hard to get into the top three."
"Who is in your top three?" rushed out of her mouth before she could bite her tongue. Nya cringed at her own desperation, thankful she didn't say out loud is it me?
It seemed as though Jay could read her mind. "Like I said before, a lady never asks and a gentleman never tells."
Instead of snapping at him again, Nya's arms went limp at her sides and she slowly turned back towards the bookshelf, staring absently at another cluster of books.
"Forget I asked," she mumbled, sounding uncharacteristically defeated.
Warning klaxons blared in Jay's head as panic spider-walked up stomach. Either this was a trap or he totally effed-up. In an instant he went from victory just within his grasp to clawing his way back from the jaws of defeat.
He was now walking on thin ice. Or maybe that started the moment fangirl-librarian pulled him down for a kiss.
Why did women have to be so complicated?
Resolving not to show weakness, he kept his arms crossed as he reclined against the bookshelves and gently said, "Of course you were in my top three."
Nya's body went completely stiff, as if someone hit the pause button on a video game. This was either going to go really well for him or end poorly.
"That's nice," she said weakly, keeping her eyes glued to the bookshelf.
Jay kept his gaze fixed on her, looking for any signs of sarcasm. But her normal feistiness had vanished. Her being a short fuse spitfire had been one of the many reasons he was attracted to her, but it was like a sober wave of reality from his words extinguished her flame. She looked tired, defeated, empty. Exactly like he felt when she sought comfort from Cole over him.
His stomach churned bitterly, half in pettiness and half in guilt.
He opened his mouth, ready to apologize when she turned back towards him. Her eyes dropped to his lips.
"Honestly though, that looked like a really terrible kiss," she informed him, sparks of fury returning to her eyes.
Jay huffed, mostly annoyed at himself for thinking he needed to apologize to this firecracker-heartbreaker. "Well, it caught me off guard."
"You are a ninja, nothing is supposed to catch you off guard," she mocked, throwing her voice into his articulation.
"You did."
"Oh?"
"Excuse me for wearing my heart on my sleeve and falling head over heels for a fiery little samurai!" The words exploded out of his mouth before his brain had a chance to stop them. Cole was right, Jay was the Master of Blabber, letting his mouth get him into all the trouble.
They both paused, staring awkwardly at each other. Whatever advantage Jay had was gone in an instant.
A sly smile bloomed across her face. "So I am number one," she cooed, then returned her attention to the shelves, humming happily to herself.
Jay stared at her, speechless. Outsmarted and outclassed. Again. He blew out a stuttered breath.
There was no way he was ever getting over this girl.
