30. Our Deal.
***Veer's POV.***
"Piya, you sit with me?" Subu says when we board the bus to Shimla.
She looks at me and I shake my head, but Subu takes her hand and they end up sitting together. I look at Rihaan in frustration as he gets in after putting our luggage in the boot and he gives me a clueless look. Then he looks behind me and cringes in understanding.
"Do something." I whisper.
"I rather not die today." He says.
"Which looks inevitable. Either you die by my hands or hers. You only decide and that too in just two seconds." I say.
"What?!" He asks, "Fine, I'd rather die by her hands because at least she can kiss it better."
"Ew!" I say.
"I could have said the same when I saw you feeding pani puri to Piya yesterday." He says, and I look away.
"Whatever." I say.
He shakes his head with a smile, then asks Subu, "Let's sit together."
"No." Subu says then turns back to Piya.
"But I want to talk with you." Rihaan says.
"Like we don't always." She says.
"But I want to discuss our wedding." He says.
"Which will not happen for the next three years, dear." Subu says with a deadly but calm smile.
Rihaan starts to pull back but I push him forward and say, "Last try."
"Pray it won't be the last word, too." He says, then turns back to Subu, "Please, I wanna spend some time with you."
"Rihaan and Veer. Both of you are leaving for your seats right now." She says and I glare.
"That is not fair. Piya and I have to discuss a few things." I say.
"Not caring. Just go before you are thrown out." She says, and I go to say something when I see Piya pleading with hands joined.
"Fine. But you will pay for this." I say.
"Oh, Veer. You are not good with threats, and we all know that." She says.
"Not when it comes to Piya." I mumble.
"What?" She asks.
"Nothing." I say and walk away.
I take the window seat two seats behind them with Rihaan, and Dev and Kanika are sitting together behind Piya and Subu. The bus starts and I receive a text from Mom telling me that they will be back from New York next week.
I texted back to ask when Piya's parents were coming and she said they would be coming with them only. She also told me that Ekta Dadi is doing well and that the operation was successful. I sigh in relief and decide to visit her soon.
She is a pure soul and very sweet to everyone she meets. Even though she is my Nani, she asked me to call her Dadi as Subu already calls her that and wanted one of her grandchildren to call her Dadi too. There is no difference between Subu and me in her eyes. She loves us the most and has been a pillar of support for her daughter a lot in all these years after getting separated from her husband.
The bus came to a stop at a restaurant on the outskirts of Sunder Nagar for ten minutes. And I decided to stretch my legs when Piya and Subu got up. Girls ordered what they wanted and left to freshen up. Piya specifically asked me to get a pizza for us. And by us, she meant me and her.
Confused, I do as she says and buy one along with two burgers and one coke and one mango juice. We wait for them, but they have yet to arrive. Rihaan asked me to go ahead as he wanted to make a call to his office, so I got on the bus and took my seat. When Piya entered the bus, I thought to give her lunch, but she walked straight to me and sat beside me.
"Piya!" Subu exclaims, "We were supposed to talk some more."
"Later, when we go home, we can talk as much as you like. But right now I am hungry, so..." She says with a sly smile.
I try to hold back my laugh when I see the look on Subu's face. On the other hand, Rihaan looked relieved that he doesn't have to fight to sit with her girlfriend and can console her to his heart's content. Piya pokes a finger in my arm and gestures to me to give her the bag.
"Hmm... Yummy." She says.
"It is cheesy." I say when I see some of the cheese get on the tip of her nose.
"Why aren't you eating?" She asks when I don't eat the burger I got.
"I had my fill with pizza." I say and wipe the cheese away with a tissue.
"So can I take yours? I skipped breakfast after the dinner we had last night." She says.
"All yours." I say and she smiles, "Just like me."
She stops mid-bite and I chuckle at the cute blushing face she makes, then comes the awkward slap on the arm along with my name, "Veer! Stop it."
"I wanted to ask you something." I say.
"What?" She asks as she opens the second burger.
"Do you want our parents to know?" I ask, and she stops.
She thinks for a long minute, then says, "Let's wait. We just started dating and we are trying to open up a little about what we want. Not that I am saying I don't want to tell them. It just doesn't seem like the right time to tell them. I need more time with you before they know. Do you understand what I am trying to say?"
"I am. Even I want to wait for sometime before telling them about us. We need to build our relationship stronger, strong enough that they could trust us. But also it should be us from whom they should know about this other than someone else. And both of our parents are very mature and supportive, and they will give us time and space to strengthen this relationship." I say.
"You are right. Maa would definitely agree with your logic and would support me." She says.
"And Dhruv Uncle?" I ask.
"He loves me and also he once said Veer is just like his father except for his brute strength which he got from his mother." She says with a chuckle.
"What?!" I ask in surprise.
"Come on, Mayra Aunty has beaten more people than Shaurya Uncle." She says.
"That I agree with you. Mom is a hell of a fighter herself." I say with a smile.
"Papa likes you and I know somewhere he knows you are the best for me, but in the end he will give you a tough time." She says.
"Why wouldn't he? He is a girl's father and his girl is the most talented and exceptional daughter in the world." I say and she smiles, "Don't you worry about my parents."
"No chance. Your whole family loves me. Are you forgetting I was declared your wife the day I first entered your house?" She says.
"Who told you this story?" I ask.
"The infamous Anu Masi." She says and I laugh.
"She is truly something. Even I got to know about this story from her. She used to tease me constantly that I lost the chance of becoming her son-in-law, but Shravan would be the lucky one now." I say.
"Poor Shravan." She says, and laughs along with me.
"We will tell them after they come back." I say.
"So after ten days?" She asks with a pout.
"Yes. Are you okay with that?" I ask.
"Hmm... At first I wasn't, because I would have my parents watching me every time I would go with you. But I know they trust me and you. And also it would be a relief not to hide things from them." She says.
"So it is final, huh?" I ask.
"Yes, it is. But you will talk to my parents and I will talk to yours." She says.
"Ho! You are so sly." I say in shock and she giggles.
"I am not changing my mind." She says.
"It was a very long but a very satisfying trip, wasn't it?" Kanika asks as soon as we come to stand inside the bus station.
"It was." Piya says and tightens her hold around my arm.
"Let's make sure we do this every year, guys." Dev says.
"We will." Rihaan says, "What do you say, Veer?"
"I can't wait." I say.
"Then this is the deal whoever breaks will pay for the trip." Rihaan says and we look at him in question, "Agree already. I need a break from all the weddings I arrange."
"Fine. Deal." I say, putting my hand on his.
"Deal." Kanika says.
"Deal." Dev says.
"What are you guys waiting for? Agree already." Rihaan says.
"Sure. Who will click your poor people's picture if not me?" Subu says and puts her hand, "Deal."
I look at Piya to find her deep in thought. I shake her a little and she blinks up at me and I ask, "Deal?"
She blinks again, then smiles and puts her hand on the top and says, "Deal."
I smile down at her in excitement. Next time I will decide where we will go for our trip and Piya and I will celebrate our first year together in a place that she will remember for years to come.
That's a promise.
