Whirl

I nervously play with my hands. It's been about two days since we left the underground. We had to travel far away from the settlement to be able to fly the spaceship without harming it or alerting others to its location. We've been moving through space for a little more than 26 hours. In two more, we'll reach our location. I look towards the front of the ship hoping to spot Jack. I can hear him chatting and laughing with someone. Probably Namazzi I think with angry realisation. She and David are also here to help their father. Vander was left to take care of the Van Dijk section during Harlem's absence.

I go over my part of the plan, which is very small. Infiltrate the storage area, follow group 3 to the food supply and hide somewhere to keep a lookout for them. It's a rushed plan with little intel, but the founders seemed desperate to calm the conflict in the underground before it led to a greater problem. At least I'm in the same group as Jack. A little part of me is also thankful that Namazzi is with him. Even though I dislike her, she's good with her hands and even better with a gun.

It seems like those 2 hours last forever before Harlem walks down the aisle of the ship reminding us of our part. I take a deep breath, taking my glass orb out of my little waist pouch and holding it tightly. I brought that and the money Jack gave me in 915 just in case the plan doesn't work, and I somehow get stranded here. I register that it's glowing which means that Jack also has his. This warms my heart and calms my mind a bit. I don't have time to dwell on that, however, as we stop moving and Harlem orders us to stand.

There's a thick nervous tension in the air as the first group leaves the ship. They are only ten people with the job of clearing the area of any guards. I don't hear any gunshots and assume the best. Namazzi stands beside me, whispering frantically to herself. I realise that she must be praying or something. We were taught about religions in 915 but since I don't remember anything from my youth, I'm not sure if my parents believed in God.

A solid minute goes by as the silence fills the ship. Finally, they come back, one of them whispers something to Harlem. He must have told him that everything is clear because group 1 breaks into two teams, 5 people in group 2 and 5 in group 3. Harlem guides group 2 out of the pod and into the mothership we're raiding. It seems as if everyone is holding their breath, waiting to hear gunshots or shouts, any sign that the plan is askew. I'm not sure how much time goes by before I hear two gunshots. I can hear a lot of gasps, including my own and I close my eyes, hoping against hope that nothing is wrong.

They finally come back with bags full of food, which they stack at the back of the ship. It's now the third group's turn. I nervously run along with 19 other people into the food storage. It's eerily quiet and dark but for the slight glow coming from my waist. I quickly move to one end of the huge metal room. There's a door, similar to the one between boxes 915 and 916. I slightly open it and peer outside. A hallway just like the one between 915 and 916. And finally, a window, I'm sure if I looked through it, I'll see space just like in the hallway between 915 and 916.

I stop my thoughts from wandering as I watch the hallway, watching and waiting for any movement from the door at the opposite end. I fully expect someone to burst in guns ready to fire at the intruders, but no one comes. I can hear soft rustling and clanking as the rest of the group loads the bags. Finally, people start whispering that the food is collected and that we can head back. I smile widely as I realise that we somehow made it, and no one got hurt. I rush to the ship along with everyone else. I can't see Jacklinso, but I know he's ok. We'll go back with plenty of food and laugh about this mission while eating said food.

Then I hear a creak and before I understand what it is, a gun fires. Then people scream. Everything is a chaotic blur. Some of the group starts to push back into the storage while others run towards the space pod. I spot a few people coming out of it with guns, firing at the guards. I spot David and Harlem among them. I wildly search for Jack. Please be ok. Please be alive.

"DAVID!" I hear a blood-curdling scream from Namazzi. Horror grips me as I spot her brother on the ground, a pool of blood surrounds him. Namazzi starts heading towards him and I finally spot Jack, running behind her, straight into the storm of bullets.

"Jack! Jack, no!"

Everyone is shouting. Everyone is scrambling to save themselves. Harlem warned us that if we were found, we shouldn't panic. Shouldn't scream. Shouldn't push to reach the pod. Shouldn't do exactly what we're doing right now. I head towards Jacklinso who's dragging Namazzi away from the gunfight. I pull her with him. She's thrashing around, calling to her brother. We drag her out of the hallway and into the dark storage room. He finally lets her go when we're hidden from the guards, she makes a dull thud as she slides to the ground, trembling.

"Namazzi, look at me," Jack crouches and holds her tear-stained face, whisper-shouting at her, "We need to get out of here. Get up and move with me."

She doesn't answer him, but she nods after a few seconds. We slowly tiptoe through the room, Namazzi is still shaking and sobbing. We move around using the glow of our globes, but it somehow seems darker now. I realise Namazzi's still carrying the food bag, which is making her slower than she already is due to the shock, so I take it from her. I don't even know if we can reach the ship but if we get lost here, we'll need the food.

Suddenly, there's a metal clank and Jack yelps in pain as he tumbles. I spot two red dots.

"Jack," I whisper cautiously, "There's something here."

He rises slowly, turning towards us. Namazzi finally stops crying and I can hear, among the guns and screaming outside, metal creaking. The red dots rise and with a jolt, I can make out the shine of metal. The metal of a robot's body.

"Oh no, oh no. Jack, that's a robot." I'm not sure whether it can see us, whether it can hear us. I'm just sure that we're about to die. Either by a robot or humans. I feel foolish now for thinking we'd make it out alive.

"Jacklinso? Ellie?" The voice is soft... and familiar.

"Carla?" I ask surprised, "What're you doing here?"

"I was found and captured by some humans. I don't know when that happened, but my system started again approximately 27 hours ago, and I found myself here."

"Don't worry, she won't hurt us," Jack states, I'm about to say I know but realise he's probably talking to Namazzi. "Carla, can you help us out?"

"I don't have enough energy to power my blaster, I can't protect you."

"Ok, ok, we can figure this out, just let's find the other do-"

He's cut short as guards rush in here shouting and opening the lights. I shield my eyes against the sudden brightness as I curse, "Crap! 'Sarn it!"

"Move!" Jack yells, "Now!"

We rush away from the guards, the light helping us locate the second door. We're almost there but it opens and more guards barge in. I hesitate before stopping, what now?

"There!" Carla, who I didn't even know was running with us, shouts, pointing to a large weird-looking square in the room.

We dash to it, Jack throwing the door open as he pushes us all in. It's a tight fit with the two huge bags of food, but we all make it and Jack slams the door shut.

"What is this?" Namazzi asks.

"I don't know, maybe another pod," Jack answers as he looks around frantically.

"Jack they're coming!" I shout spotting guards from the little window in the pod.

"I'm looking!"

"Hurry up!" Namazzi shouts.

"Stop shouting!"

We start yelling and searching for any buttons, searching for anything to start this pod!

"Here!" Carla calls before I hear a click. The pod shakes violently before white light encases us. I cover my eyes, screaming as everything goes berserk. I don't know where we're headed but I know we're moving. Fast. The world seems to stop before whirling round and round.

And we whirl with it.
