Chapter 2

Calvin heaved another suitcase onto the plane's loading belt. His music was pounding heavily in his ears as he worked. To his dismay, his arm still ached from his needle earlier that day. He let out a small sigh as he recalled his doctor's appointment. They had sat him down and taken his blood for testing. Calvin's brother believed that it was unnecessary but Calvin was convinced otherwise. All the symptoms he had matched those of a cancer patient.

Looking at his watch, Calvin headed to a nearby cargo transport, sitting down swiftly. He stared silently at some of the planes as they landed and searched for inspiration. Then he saw them. Birds flying overhead. After they flew away Calvin kept the image of them in his mind as he began to draw.

After he was finished, Calvin slowly walked back towards his co-workers. They were expecting him since they were his ride home. As he approached he heard their muffled voices.

"What's wrong with Calvin?"

"He gets his treat results back today."

"Ugh. It's not even necessary dad. We both know he's not sick."

Calvin hated that his brother didn't believe him. He also hated how his brother always made a fuss. As much as Calvin wishes he didn't have to hear it every day, this job was the only one he could get. Courtesy of his father.

"Hey, dad. Sorry, I'm late." Calvin attempted to smile.

"Hop on son," his dad said with a smile. Calvin did just that. They began to drive towards the airport's main building. Calvin closed his eyes and focused on breathing. All of the sudden, they began to slow down.

"Hey, you wanna ride?" He heard his brother say.

"No thanks." Said another voice. This voice was soft, pretty, and mature. Calvin resisted the urge to open his eyes to see who this voice belonged to.

"Don't mind him." His father said. Amusement was very clear in his voice. "His wife's still breaking up with him." A small groan was heard from his brother. "Now the other boy, he's a sweetheart." Calvin's eyes shot open with that comment. Curiosity overtook him at last. He just had to know who they were talking to.

Looking at him was a young woman. Her hair was straight, short, and was dark like his. She was wearing a flight attendant uniform and a smile. The girl definitely matched her voice. Calvin smiled back and gave a weak wave as she disappeared out of sight.

After changing out of his work attire and leaving the airport, Calvin opened the car door and hopped in. His father and brother did the same. Reaching into his backpack, Calvin got his notebook and pencil. Gripping the pencil slightly, he began to draw with his newfound inspiration, the pretty girl with the pretty voice.
