XXXIV
"Can we talk about this later, Sasha?" there was a tender sincerity in his eyes which calmed Sasha down almost immediately.
"Yeah... okay"
He turned to the head officer and produced an envelope from his jacket's inner pocket and gently put it on his desk, quite in contrast to his demeanor just a few minutes ago. It was almost as if something changed in him the moment he admitted, perhaps most to himself, who he really was. Something had reminded him of tenderness. Whatever it was, it was serious, and it demanded complete presence from everyone in the room. They all complied to it.
The officer picked the envelope up and examined it for a good five minutes in the span of which he gestured toward these 'detectives' to sit down.
"I remember this one, actually this correspondence, so to say, rather vaguely. But the thing is that I usually don't remember most of the letters that come in and out of this office at all. i remember this at all is because this girlish woman would come and leave these here and ask me to deliver it to this man. See, they are not actually from Finland. Of course, I was strictly against it. But she was very persistent. Finally, she managed to convince me. She told me that his only daughter had died and unable to bear the pain, he had convinced himself that she had gone onto Finland and that these letters were the only thing that gave him any hope in life. Eventually i had to give in. I knew that it was wrong and dangerous. I tried to warn her. But officer i must plead innocent. i know i am in trouble and you are here to arrest me but i honestly thought that i was helping someone. You see I am the father of two children and so I understood the pain of the old lad and I somehow saw my own daughter in that girl. I am really sorry"
You would think this would rattle Karthik's bones and he would have to excuse himself. Hell I almost wrote him in the corner of a panic attack, but to my surprise he was unfazed.
"No, I am not here to arrest you. Can you describe the girl for me?" he said curtly; not giving the man a chance to regain his stature.
"Uh... umm... I barely remember."
"Tell me anything and everything you remember."
"She... she was very well spoken. Her eyes... yes, her eyes. They were so sad and old. Older than the rest of her face. Her hair was quite short she always wore these ill-fitting clothes. I couldn't help but think that she must not belong to a comfortable family."
His description betrayed every memory of Reva that Karthik had archived in his heart so meticulously. Just in case he would have to find her blindfolded in a crowd. Somewhere he must have known that he would have to one day. All but one thing rumbled his hope and that was her perceived eloquence. The Reva he knew was in fact quite eloquent. It was one of things that he found particularly attractive. He sat there in complete silence, contemplating, for quite some time. He was exuding a gravitas that was conjuring silence and pursing it on the lips of everyone in the room. Then, suddenly something struck him.
"Would you recognize her if I showed you a picture?"
"I can try."
He took his wallet out and found a picture that he has managed to hide within its folds and showed it to the officer. He asked to hold the picture in his hand and Karthik promptly handed it to him. He looked at it for a while and said.
"Yes. That is her"
