Chapter 3
*Kimberly Martin's POV:
Half of the cafeteria, including Gaia and her friend Katie grew silent as they looked at us. Meanwhile, the silence between me, Celosia and Danny only lasted a few moments.
"Is it really over?" Celosia asked, breaking the silence with a small hint of happiness.
Danny looked around to see who was watching. Almost everyone went back to minding their business and going about their meal. All except Gaia and Katie. They were still watching us.
"Let's discuss this in a quieter place outside of the cafeteria" he suggested as he wrapped his arm around our shoulders. Danny then turned back towards Isabella. "Bella, I will be right back, I need to speak with them about my vision."
"Okay, I'm going to go find Thomas and chat with him. Take as much time as you need" she replied before making her way.
Danny began guiding us towards the cafeteria's door. As we were leaving, many things were going through my mind: Did the virus really died out? If so, how? And more importantly, if the virus has died out, how many people has it already killed? Millions? Billions?
Danny closed the cafeteria's door behind him. He inhaled and exhaled, ready to explain to us everything he knew.
"You see, Isabella gave me a composition book to write down all of my visions and inner thoughts in. I've even told Noah about this," He spoke up.
"Yeah?" I said, seeing where he was going with this.
"A couple of days ago, I had a vision that people all over the world were rioting against their government, mainly because of a vaccine that the World Health Organization had let out. Keep in mind, the U.N. told them to release it. The U.N. told the public it was going to protect them by not letting the powers make it through their nervous system, god forbid, if they were ever kidnapped by those who worked for W.E.A. The U.N even told the public that teens and adults were getting kidnapped now, and it wasn't just little kids and infants anymore. What people didn't know was that the vaccine included the virus, and that's how this whole thing started. Because the extermination of Experi-babies came to an end so quickly thanks to Shimizu, they released the virus two years before they previously planned. Remember, these events were to lower the world's population."
As Danny was going on and on about population control, my mind began to think back to the time where I made small talk with the store owner we got our items from up top, several months ago.
"It's getting bad out here. Most people are in quarantine, but others are angry" I remember him saying. That was it. I just didn't make much of it.
"Okay, but you said that the pandemic was done and over with. How did they manage to do it? Is the UF-37 (the name of the virus) outbreak really over?" Celosia asked impatiently, cutting him off because she wanted to know how it ended and not how it began.
"Okay" Danny replied, trying to catch his breath from blabbing on. "A former doctor, now a politician, came to the public and revealed that he has created a vaccine to fight against the virus. People were hesitant to take it or even listen to him. But once people started getting the UF-37 vaccine, it started making wonders. Those who got it became immune to it and those who were sick with it were cured."
"What is this guy's name?" I asked, crossing my arms.
"John Victran."
Celosia and I looked at each other. I began to wonder if this is the guy that would become the leader of the New World Order. It seemed as though Danny's prophecy was really coming true, despite what I thought about him and his prophecies when I first met him years prior.
"People see him as a hero now. It was only two months ago when he unleashed the vaccine to the public" Danny added.
"If it was two months ago, why are you telling us now?" I asked.
"I had the vision last night, right before I went to bed. I ended up writing everything down so that way I don't forget any details" Danny claimed. "This man might be the one I was talking about years ago. The one who might not only bring world peace, but also bring us to the brink of war."
"Celosia! Kimberly! It's time for us to head out!" Max, whom was one of the hunters shouted over to us as he and twelve other hunters left their bedroom section and walked over towards the pharmacy.
"We're coming!" Celosia shouted back before replying to Danny. "I think so too. This should be every more reason to go and stock up on more food. The more food, water, clothing and medicine we have, the greater chance we have of surviving this war and the aftermath of it all" She explained to him before we both started to follow the group of hunters.
"And another thing..." Danny said, almost forgetting to mention something. We stopped in our tracks and looked back at him. "I don't know why, but I feel like we may have to leave this place pretty soon. I have a feeling somebody in this shelter may reveal something that will cause some of us to leave. I tried to use my powers to figure out where these feelings are coming from or what they mean, but it may take a while to reveal it. This is typically normal, since it takes some time for visions to expose themselves. It could take a few minutes to a few months."
I was confused by what Danny had told me. Who was the person in the shelter? What would they reveal? How bad or good enough would be it that we would have to leave this place? How many of us would leave? And wouldn't it be a good thing that less people would be in the shelter? That would mean more food for the few that's left here.
"Um, alright then, well, while you figure that out, me and Celosia are going on our next hunting mission" I replied as I grabbed her arm and yanked it as we continued our way.
I looked back at Danny. He stood there, looking at the ground while biting his nails. He looked a little unsettled, like he was hiding something and was trying to decide on whether or not he should tell us.
As I entered the pharmacy section, I could see that the hunters were starting to put on their hazmat suits. Celosia took her blue contacts from out of her pocket, and carefully placed them on.
"Guys, there's no need to put on our suits anymore" she announced, her eyes watering from the contacts. The hunters all looked at us like we were crazy.
"Why?" one of them, a female asked.
"Because apparently, according to the shelter's psychic Danny, the virus is over now. We can go up there without any suits" I said with a great amount of fake optimism. The hunters looked at each other with not only surprise, but a great amount of confusion.
"Excuse us for a moment, please" I pleaded to them as I pulled Celosia aside. "Celo, I don't know about this. Are you sure we should go without our suits?"
"If Danny says it's safe then I don't see what's the problem?" she replied.
"He never said it was safe, he just said we didn't have to worry about a virus anymore. There's a difference."
"Well, we can't stay here and starve to death. We have a mission to complete" she responded, before looking straight at my fellow hunters. "We are leaving this place without our hazmat suits and that's final. If our fellow psychic Danny says the virus is over, then we have no reason to wear them. Just make sure you bring your weapons and stay together."
Afterwards, me, Celosia and the group of hunters left the pharmacy section and headed towards the door of the shelter. I pressed the red button that opened the door and the pulled the latch that opened up the ground above us.
I took a sigh as we went up the stairs and back out into the outside world. The cool breeze of mid October morning hit us almost immediately.
I looked around me. Nature bloomed and blossomed. Bunnies bounced from point A to point B and a few deer were in a distance drinking from a nearby lake. Birds were heard chirping as flew high over us into the orange and red trees.
Me and my crew headed to the five vans that were parked in the distance. Each one for three people. The vans were just ordinary vans and none of them matched in color. We couldn't risk anyone getting suspicious.
Me, Celosia and our teammate Max hopped into one of the vans and waited for everyone else to hope into theirs.
"Alright team, let's drive off" Celosia announced into a walkie talkie.
"Roger that" the other hunters responded from the other vans.
She began driving out as the other hunters followed. I was in the passenger seat and Max was sitting in between us.
We were a couple miles into the forest, but it wasn't going to take long until we reach the nearby urban city of Eureka.
I decided to turn on the radio, to break the silence and ease the worry between me, Celosia and Max. The worry of not being given enough resources, just like last time.
We began listening to a podcast between a man and a woman. They were talking about the destruction and fatality of the pandemic that occurred for about five years. They talked about how life is finally going back to normal and how it was all thanks to John Victran.
"Who is John Victran?" Max asked.
Me, nor Celosia responded. We were too busy listening to the podcast.
Throughout the couple of years we've spent worrying about resources, I haven't had the time to think about the things that Danny said would happen, from the World Peace/New World Order era, to World War 3 and the probable extinction of humanity. When we met Danny, we were living in the beginning of the extermination of Experi-babies. Now, five years later, we are at the beginning of the World Peace/New World Order era.
It made me sick just thinking about.
It wasn't long before we made it to the city of Eureka. Once we reached the city, each van took a different route so no one in the city would get suspicious of why five vans were following each other to a specific place.
As we drove through the city, my jaw dropped wide at how Eureka was not how I expected it to be.
People were out and about instead of being at home in quarantine. Everyone was outside, as happy as can be, hugging their loved ones and greeting their friends. Nobody was wearing masks anymore and no one had a look of uncertainty and fear like I was used to seeing.
"What in the world?!" Max mumbled as he brushed aside his brown, curly hair to see right in front of him.
It was as if we were driving through a Utopia.
"If the pandemic is over, doesn't this mean we can leave the shelter for good?" Max asked me with optimism in his young voice.
I just looked at him, but didn't respond. I wasn't sure of what to say. Me and the others have been debating about it for a few years: should we tell the people living at the shelter about the events that will occur in the near future? Or do we let those people leave the shelter to return to the outside world? It's selfish either way.
After ten minutes of driving around the city, we finally made it to the supermarket, whom is run by a man and his family, who is secretly on the side of us Experi-babies. We parked into the back alley of the Supermarket to prevent suspicion. Once we left the car, we speedily walked around the market and approached the front door of the international supermarket called "Matthews".
A cool breeze from the wind overwhelmed us as I looked at a man and his family closing the supermarket doors and locking it.
"What?" Celosia mumbled to herself as she looked at me and the others behind us. They were just as confused as I was.
"Mr. Matthew!" she yelled to get his attention. He, along with his family turned to their right to look at us. The man smiled genuinely.
"Hello Celosia, hello everyone. Sorry you had to see this. I was hoping we wouldn't close before you all were able to come back," Mr. Matthew sighed sadly with a thick Nigerian accent. His apron was dusty and covered in flour which got on some of his pants. By the looks of sadness on his face, I could tell something was terribly wrong.
"What's going on?" I asked with concern, wondering why they were closing the supermarket so early. "You always close at ten at night."
"You see, my market is closing for good" He said with a bit of hesitation.
"Why?!" I asked him loudly. The tone of my voice kind of scared him.
"Because I am losing sales, which is causing me to be in debt. More and more people aren't coming to my store anymore. I guess people are finding better and more improved markets to go to. That's not all, once I shut this place down, Governor Carlton has plans to turn this area into a mall!" Mr. Matthew explained, taking his glasses off and rubbing his eyes as he cried. "The only good thing about this is that, I have enough money saved from investing to support my family for years to come. But even still, I have some debt to pay off from bank loans. I've even had to lay off my workers because not much money was coming in. I was thinking about moving my family and I back to Lagos, but my wife and kids wanted to stay. I have some items and goods stored for you in the back, but after they run out, I wont have anything left. It should be enough to last three months, four at best, I am so sorry."
I couldn't believe what he was telling me. I couldn't believe that was really it. We met this man by chance the first time we went out to hunt for food during the pandemic. Come to find out, he was against the extermination of Experi-babies, which was what gained our trust in him.
For the last two years out of the five years we've spent in the shelter, we've gotten supplies, foods, water bottles and other items from him that no other supermarket would have. Sometimes, they were scarce. Other times, we had plenty to last for a few months. We've even started to think of him as a a close friend to us, but now, all of that was going to change. There would be no more trips to the market from the shelter. No more of Mr. Matthew secretly guiding us back to the storage place of the market to retrieve the items that he had packed for us. There wasn't even going to be a point in hunting anymore unless we caught wild animals, but lord knows what diseases they would carry.
"Are there any other places that we can get food, water and supplies from?" I asked sternly, trying not to shout at him.
"Not that we know of, but I wouldn't trust anyone else if I were you, you'll never know how they would feel about Experi-babies, they might discriminate against you, which would make it even harder to get the things you need. That branding mark on your arm is evidence you are one of them." Mr. Matthew's wife Ms. Andrea answered for him in deep sympathy as she clenched the shoulders of her twelve year old daughter and son.
I looked at the branding mark on my right arm. The number that was branded on to my flesh was the number was thirty seven and Celosia's was thirty six. Our cabins were next to each other.
I didn't know what else to say. I was so devastated by the news, yet I was so angry at Mr. Matthew for giving up on his store like that.
Before I could snap, I gulped and took a deep breath.
"Where is the items located?" I asked slowly, trying to keep calm.
"They are all in the storage room near the back door. Come, I will guide you to them. We will have to walk around to the back of the store because I've already locked the main doors" Mr. Matthew sadly explained as he guided us to follow him.
Mr. Matthew opened the back door of the store to reveal the five large piles. One of canned foods, breads, eggs, meats, and two of household items, clothes, shoes and dish and laundry detergent.
My eyes wondered around. Nothing else was in the storage area of the market, it was as empty, and eerily quiet.
Without a word, for the next couple of hours, we've placed the piles of items into each of our five vans that was parked a several meters away from the backdoor. As I was carrying some of the items into my van, I couldn't even look Mr. Matthew in his eye. I was so angry, yet so afraid. What were we going to do? How were we going to survive? I wanted to scream thinking about it.
Once we were finished, it was around three in the afternoon. Most of the hunters, including me, exhausted from grabbing and lifting the items into the vehicles, sighed in relief as they got into their vans. Celosia stayed behind and talked to Mr. Matthew and his family. By her body language, I could tell she was furious, but she didn't want to take her anger out in front of us. I rolled the window down to hear their conversation.
"I think this would be a great time to come up out of hiding. As long as you try your best to hide your powers and stay out of trouble, you should be fine. You shouldn't have to hide anymore. People still feel a certain way about Experi-babies, but W.L. Victran even said, "as long as you do not use your powers for evil and mischief, there shouldn't be a problem," Mr. Matthew suggested.
"Sir, Ma'am, John Victran is only going to take us to the brink of war" Celosia said bluntly.
"What? That doesn't make any type of sense. He is a good man and such be respected. He is trying to change a corrupt system, not only in America, but in other parts of the world!" Mrs. Andrea argued back, standing up for John Victran as if he was her family member or something.
I decided to chime in and beep the horn before Celosia would respond. They weren't going to get it. They were brainwashed to basically worship the man, everyone was. There was no getting through to them.
"Come on Celosia!" I shouted after beeping the horn.
She turned to me and turned back to Mr. Matthew and his family.
"Please stay safe and try to live out of the shelter for once. You may not regret it" Mr. Matthew replied to Celosia as he placed his hand on her shoulder. They gave their goodbyes before Celosia stepped into the car.
"Are you okay?" Max asked Celosia from the backseat of the van, leaning over towards us. She didn't respond, but slammed the door and immediately drove off.
"What are we going to do when the food ruins out?" I asked out loud to myself, staring out the window.
"Shit!" I heard Celosia yelled. Me and Max both turned to look at her.
"Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit!" she screamed with tears in her eyes as she slammed her fist on to the steering wheel, swerving the car a little as we entered the streets of the city. "What are we going to do? How would we ever explain this to the people in the shelter?!"
"How will we explain this to Mr. Hada?" Max responded, correcting her, stressing just as much as she was, and rightfully so.
Celosia looked at me for a second, wondering what we should do. Her eyes were pink from crying.
I didn't know what to tell her. I didn't want to give her the wrong answer, nor did I want her to go with my judgment on what I thought was right.
Even though I was silent, I had so many what-if questions going through my mind as we drove back into the forest we've came from.
