Chapter 28

*Katie Scott's POV:*

I paced the room, my mind begin racing as tears rolled down my face.

"Oh my god, what are we going to do? How are we going to get out of here?!", I panicked, gripped onto my silky straight hair before putting my back against the wall.

I sucked in my screams and cries for our friends. I had to keep it together, for Isabella's sake. If anyone should be crying right now, it's her. It wasn't the time for me to give up and go crazy. I needed to be strong for her.

She laid in bed, the bottom bunk, rubbing her belly as she fought through her contractions. It seemed like they were coming more and more often. And the more they came, the more helpless I felt.

I wetted a rag and placed it on her forehead. Gaia has taught me many things, especially what to do while a person is about to give birth/is giving birth. But I never thought it would be me. I never thought I would be the one to do it, unless she gets transported to a hospital.

I noticed two male officers passing by, I quickly ran over to the cell doors, my body slamming against it with a sudden clash.

"HEY! Hey you!", I called out to them. They stopped in their tracks and turned their heads back at me. Their face grew stern, like they wanted absolutely nothing to do with us.

"Please, my friend, Isabella Hernandez, she's suffering from contractions. She's pregnant and will be going into labor soon. I am not experienced in giving birth, I was only the shelter's nursing assistant. Is it possible she can be transported to a hospital? If not, can you assist with giving birth? "

The two officers looked at each other, then began to burst out in laughter, walking away from us.

"Like we would help you walking experiments", I heard one of them say.

"She's not a fucking experi-baby!", I shouted at them, banging onto the bars, hurting my hand in the process. My anger overpowered the pain as I rubbed my forehead in distress.

"They could literally see someone who so happens to be related to an experi-baby, in pain and needing assistance with birthing a child soon and still won't give them the proper respect? "Regular humans" are fucking gross", I thought to myself.

"Katie", Isabella grunted out.

I stopped by pacing and jogged over to her, sitting by her on the bed.

"Can I have some water?", she said, sitting upward, water from the rag that was on her forehead dripped down her face. Her hair was messy and everywhere.

"Yeah, I gotchu girl".

I ran to the sink to grab a bottle of water. The guards were nice enough to at least give us that. Bastards.

I gave it to her and watched her drink a good half of it. She sighed.

"I wish I could cry but I can't. Usually I would be screaming and banging on the cell doors, but I am in too much pain to shed a tear for my baby brother and his friends. And now he will never meet my child. I just-"

She stopped as she began to tear up, despite saying she couldn't cry. But by the tone of her voice I could tell she had given up hope.

"Bella, I-"

I couldn't say a word. Celosia, Gaia, Beval and Kimberly were all taken to their deaths. I just hope it was quick and painless. No more pain should be afflicted on them. It was already enough pain living as an experi-baby.

"It's okay". She said to me, looking into my eyes as she managed to get out a smile. A couple tears strolled down her face. "I just know he is at peace, in heaven waiting for us."

I wasn't a Catholic like Isabella and her family was, so I had no input. I was aligned with the beliefs of my heritage: Native American spiritualities.

We sat there for a while in silence before she yelled out, leaning forward as contractions arose again.

"Isabella!", I cried out. I grabbed my pillow from the top bunk to the bottom. I placed one pillow on top of the other to help support the back so she could sit up comfortably.

"No! It's fine", she got out between heavy breaths. "I have faith Danny will save us. God I can't wait to see him, I'll give him a huge kiss. He deserves it, after everything."

She giggled. She actually managed to get out a giggle while in this predicament. But knowing Isabella, she really wanted to trash the entire cell, beat the guards with a baseball bat, burn the prison to the ground like she did with Mina's house, and hunt down the executioner like the badass she was. But just like Celosia, over the years she mellowed down and became softer. Her crazy days were over. Pregnancy and our shelter did that.

I had to think, Danny was given psychic powers. Eventually he will use them to check on us to see how we are and then realize we are in lord knows where in a cold prison with barely any heating. We can't leave our cells so food is brought to us. We are basically caged animals and no one is fighting for us. If they are, they end up either being canceled, ostracized, or like Shimizu and Hikari's mom, dead by bullet.

"Danny is a psychic, so I'm sure he has an idea of what's going on, or he will at some point. We just have to show patience", I smiled, sniffing in tears. "Lower your head for me."

I took off the black hair tie around my wrist and used my fingers to comb her hair back into a ponytail. Her hair was wavy, shiny and thick. But it was also greasy to the touch and had some split ends that needed to be trimmed. Unfortunately we didn't have a hairdresser in the shelter so either we did it ourselves or we end up looking as crazy as the doll "Cynthia" from the show "Rugrats".

"You're the one to talk. You were cussing and fussing not even ten minutes ago", Isabella chuckled at my audacity.

"That's because I'm losing hope, yet you aren't. It's strange really. You have a child that will be born soon yet you aren't screaming for your brother and friends, and aren't crying out to go to the hospital?"

Isabella laid down onto the pillows, placing her right arm over her belly. She stared at me with hopeful eyes and a small smile.

"Because I trust you to deliver my baby. I don't trust anyone else with them. Gaia has taught you a lot, and I trust that you will put it into practice." She grabbed my hand. "I know I am asking for a lot but you have to keep in mind, I am delivering a baby that has a 50% chance of inheriting Danny's powers. The remaining experi-babies that survived the pandemic with everyone else are still very much feared and hated. It's best if they aren't delivered by nurses who may or may not hate experi-babies too."

The fear I had inside of me settled and it was replace by flattery for a brief moment. I was still a rookie and yet she trusted me more than the nurses at the hospital with two to four years of schooling, plus experience. But my question was: how would they know Danny is an experi-baby? You can't tell by looking at him like you can with Celosia, Shimizu, Beval and Gaia. Hell, not even with our friend Kimberly who has regular grey eyes.

"How would they know the baby would be an experi-baby? Danny isn't an obvious experi-baby unless he tells a nurse something about them only they kno-"

Isabella clenches and groans in pain as her contractions comes back. I leaned her back against the pillow, putting the wet rag over her head again so she doesn't overheat.

"We are in a prison girl. The officers would let the hospital know what's up. All of our information and everything would be sent to them", she continued, breathing heavily.

Before I could respond with an "oh, yea of course"...sounds of commotion and yelling hit my eardrums. I turned my head towards the cell doors.

"Wait here", I told Isabella as I got up to check it out. If I had my powers I would've just stretched my neck over to see while still sitting in the bed. But no, the guards had to take them away.

I grabbed onto the far left of the bars and leaned to the left to see what was going on. Those in the upstairs jail cells and even surrounding cells were happily shouting at something...or someone.

"They're back! They're back!" , I heard a kid yell as he hugged his mother, staring down the hall from their cell.

"What's going on Katie?", Isabella groaned out.

Eventually, I saw them as they passed by our cell.

"They're alive?! THEY'RE ALIVE! OH MY GOSH!", I screamed as I proceed to jump up and down in happiness.

I turned my head towards Isabella, tears beginning to stream down like rain on a window.

"Isabella, they're back! They aren't dead!"
