Chapter 19

*Kimberly Martin's POV:

That night, I sat near a desk. A LED desk light shined over the wooden desk, I could feel the heat on my hand as I colored a piece of paper out of boredom. I couldn't sleep, plus, I was a little drunk.

A glass of wine was to the right of my desk.

I sighed, turning my head to look at my best friend. She was asleep in her bed, and Hikari and Gaia were asleep as well. The room was dark, except for my light and Celosia's nightlight beside her bed, shining enough for me to see her face, hidden within her messy thick hair.

That entire day was a disaster. I had to continuously check those who dared to talk shit about her around me. I wasn't having any of it. Think what you want about her, but that was still my best friend. I'm not excusing what she did but if you knew the whole story between her and Shimizu you will understand why she did it. Ever since she met him she was infatuated with him, even if she didn't show it. And until now, he didn't know it.

Slight snores filled the room.

I shook my head as a chuckled to myself.

"We have been here not even two weeks and she was already kissing Shimizu", I thought. I figured it would've taken her reaching her breaking point before telling him, but I guess not.

Drawing a line, my elbow made contact with the glass of wine. It tilted over, creating a brief waterfall, splashing on the floor beneath me.

"Shit", I quietly cursed. Getting a couple napkins out of my pocket to clean the wine off the floor. I mumbled under my breath as I scrubbed the wine off the door.

"Hey, are you okay?" I heard Gaia ask in a groggy voice.

I turn to look at her. She was sitting up in her bed, fixing the scarf on her head.

"Yeah, I just spilled some wine on the floor, nothing major", I chuckled, giving her a fake smile.

"Oh, alright", she replied, laying back down.

I decided it was time for me to go for a walk, just to get my nerves down. Lord knows what else I would've been spilling. All I knew was that I was angry as hell. First, the gossiping and now the wine. We didn't have a mop in the room so it would make the floor sticky. On my way back to my room, I would've had to fetch a mop from the shelter's kitchen.

Taking my room key with me, I slowly opened the suite's door, then quietly closed it.

As I walked, I tried my best to calm myself down, taking in deep breaths as I stumbled over my own feet a couple of times. There were very little people around, so thank god that they didn't have to see me like this. I had a few not-so-nice words for quite a few people today, and this would've been the perfect time for them to jump me.

I crossed the gym room, the garden room, and even the laundry room. The satisfying smell of Snuggle detergent hit my nose in such an pleasant way, I smiled walking pass it.

In the corner of my eye to the left, I spotted a figure. I turned my head and widen my eyes as I saw Ashley walking. She looked like she was in a hurry. She frantically looked around her. To avoid being seen, I hid behind a wall as I watched her use a key to open the shelter's kitchen.

"Why was she going to the kitchen at this time? It's three in the morning, and snack time is in between meals", I thought to myself, trying to rationalize it.

I'm not the nosy type but something inside of me told me to follow her, so instead of saying "fuck it" and going back to my room, I decided to say "fuck it" and follow her.

I jogged over to the kitchen door and tried to open it, but it was locked.

I rarely use my powers but because I was so curious, I decided to not give up. I turned into an ant and crawled under the door. I hunched and crawled over the pieces of wood that were from the bottom of the door itself, and all the debris on the floor. Once I was fully on the other side, I turned back into a human, dusting myself off.

I jogged over towards the hallway on the side of the cafeteria, hunching as I tried to make myself unnoticed. At the end of the hallway, there was a door with a blurry square window on it. It said "canned storage". I placed my body against the wall, trying my best to remain unseen as I slowly peeked to see what was she doing in there.

"Kimberly?" I heard a deep voice say.

I jumped in fear. But I quickly calmed down when I realized it was just Sargent Thompson.

"What are you doing here, late at night?" he asked, coming closer.

"Oh-", I replied, my mouth still in an "o" shape.

I had to think of a lie or he would've thought I was some stalker. I mean, not that I would care.

"Oh, I was looking for a mop. Funny story really, I was drawing because I was bored and I'm kind of drunk so I ended up spilling the wine all on the floor, so I figured it was here in the kitchen", I rambled, giving him a wide smile.

"Um, you passed by the mop on your way in here". He pointed. "It's left there, right next to the entrance".

I looked behind me and saw a mop inside of a bucket far off, near the cafeteria's door.

"Oh- haha, I can't believe I missed it", I chuckled in embarrassment. "Well, now that I found it, I'll use it quickly then bring it back. Gotta go, bye!"

"Wait!", he ordered.

I stopped in my tracks. My heartbeat trashed profusely. It felt as if it was trying to escape my chest.

I turned to look at him. My throat tighten as I responded. "Yeah?"

He looked down at my feet, furrowing his eyebrows.

"Where are your shoes?"

I looked down at my feet. I had black socks on. I was so tipsy that I didn't realize I walked out of my room without shoes on.

"Oh, I left them in my room. I figured I'd be quick" I smiled.

"Kimberly, lay off the wine and go to bed. Tomorrow morning, we meet at the office", Sargent Thompson replied, cutting his eyes with a dominant voice.

"Yes sir", I joked, giving him a salute before walking away, towards the cafeteria's door. It wasn't long before I looked back.

He was still standing there, staring at me. I could tell he was making sure I was leaving.

I was going to turn into an animal again, but I didn't want him to know how I got in. I decided to try to open the door. Come to find out, it was locked from the outside only.

"Why was Ashley back there? And how did Sargant Thompson know where I was?", I thought as I made my way back towards my suite. A quick change of mind happened as I sat down on a bench, exhaling as my butt hit the seat. I spent the next few minutes thinking about what just happened.

"Why did Ashley look so nervous as she made her way to the storage room? And how did Thompson know where I-... wait a minute. What if he was following Ashley to the storage room and they were gonna-"

I cringed at the thought of them doing it in an area where we stored our non-refrigerated food.

One thing was certain though, I may have a hangover tomorrow, but I was still going to tell Celosia and Shimi-

"Kimberly?"

I jumped to the shock of a male voice suddenly calling my name, but to my relief it was only Alex.

"Why are you up so late?", he asked as he leaned over from behind the bench to look at me.

"No reason, I just wanted to go for a walk. I'm heading to bed now", I responded, abruptly getting up from the bench. I wobbled a little as I began to walk.

"Can I walk you there? You look a little disoriented."

"Uh-", I said, wondering if I should be alone or if I should let him join me. His room was near ours anyway.

Alex smiled at me, waiting for my response. I tried to fight it but his smile made me melt inside. I just met the dude couple weeks ago and since then he has kept trying to get with me, and yet I loved the chase. He was a dork yes, but a polite and charming one.

Eventually, I gave in.

"Sure".

During the walk back I told Alex what I've seen: Ashley looking nervous and over her shoulders going into the cafeteria, along with Thompson somehow knowing where I was when I swore I made sure I wasn't being followed.

Alex was just as dumbfounded as I was.

"How long do you think this has been going on?" I asked him, looking at him with great concern.

He stared off into space for a few moments.

"Well come to think of it, there were times when I saw Ashley and Thompson together at night. I never thought much of it though. I just figured they were talking like normal friends, but I guess not."

We stopped in our tracks outside of my door.

"It's crazy how Ashley may be cheating on Shimizu. I've heard about what happened; Celosia kissing him. Surprisingly, Ashley never commented on it. It was as if she didn't care", Alex explained, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Seriously?", I asked. "I'm surprised that Shimizu's girlfriend of twelve or so months wouldn't give a shit about him kissing another girl. "Was it an open relationship?"

"I'm not so sure. Just like you, I have more questions than answers. I was never that close to them."

"Got'cha. You know we will have pretend like we saw nothing tomorrow right?"

"I figured. I want them to think we didn't think much of it."

"Exactly", I smiled.

An awkward silence fell between us for moments before I broke it.

"Well, I'm off to bed. As drunk as I am, I'm going to need this sleep", I smiled before hugging Alex. He was put off my me hugging him but eventually returned the favor. "Thanks for the info by the way, good thing we know this is nothing new. Hopefully I will remember it all."

"You can hold your liquor surprisingly well, so I think so. Goodnight Kim", Alex smiled before walking off to his suite.

"Goodnight," I replied as I watched him walk further and further away.

I went inside my suite, quietly closing the door behind me. I could still hear the slight snores from Hikari and Celosia. When I turned to face my room I gasped at the silhouette of Gaia standing near the door.

"You heard everything didn't you?", I asked with a nervous smile.

"Oh yeah", she replied, crossing her arms.
