Chapter 11
*Beval Hernandez's POV:
A slight whoosh sound could be heard from my ears. My vision blurred then blackened then blurred again. The pain from my black eye was still fresh and stung like hell. I squinted and groaned as I lifted my head. It began pounding in the process. I was still in the van, but we were on the highway. I looked out the window. My vision only saw the black outline of the trees that we were cruising in between along with the occasional car that passed by us. I was the only one whom was asleep besides Gaia laying her head on my shoulder and Hikari and Tyler, whom were in the back, slouched over.
"You were stupid for hitting that guy", I heard someone say. I turned to look at Kimberly. Her gray eyes were piercing my soul. "This could've been prevented."
"No one told you to turn into a fucking tiger", I responded, nonchalantly, waking up Gaia in the process.
"Can we please just stop the arguing?", Celosia chimed in as she was driving, looking at us sternly in the rearview mirror. "We are in Humboldt County. We'll arrive to Redwood Park soon."
Kimberly looked away, shaking her head as she rolled her eyes.
There was nothing else be said. I was pretty much over the situation and didn't want to be reminded of how I fucked up and let my anger get the best of me. It led to me getting jumped, Danny having to fight, Gaia getting hit upside the head, and Celosia and Kimberly basically having to reveal that we are experi-babies by turning into a wild animal.
It wasn't even an half an hour later before someone began speaking.
"You okay?", a soft voice whispered in my ear. I turned towards it, only to be meant with the prettiest green eyes.
"I'm good Gaia. I just want to forget about it. The entire situation was so stupid to begin with. He was a drunkard that needed someone to pick on. We were just at the wrong place at the wrong time."
"And that's all it was", Gaia chimed in, comforting me as she caressed my hair that was tied in a messy man-bun. "Don't beat yourself up for trying to protect us."
"We're here," I heard Danny announce, leaning forward in the front passenger seat. He suddenly pointed to the right. "Enter that way!"
From about sixty-five meters away, we spotted a sign that said "Redwood National Park". The van steadily drove slower as it approached the sign. The sign was painted in a red and cream color. Celosia proceeded to turn right as we entered into a pathway. It was a straight, yet bumpy roadway. I had to pop my head outside of the window just to be able to see the top of the trees. It was as if they reached the stars themselves, and the trunks were the width of two vans. It was pretty dark, so the trees and the ground where the van's headlights were facing were the only things I could make out.
We suddenly jerked forward as Celosia hit the breaks.
"Wait! The guy said to meet him at the entrance, correct?" she asked Danny. He looked at her with realization on his face.
"Actually, yes he did".
Following Celosia and Danny, we all hopped out of van. I grabbed Gaia's hands and helped her out.
"I have some flashlights in the back. We will stay here and wait for him", Celosia announced, opening the trunk of her van. She handed one flashlight to each person.
I shined the flashlight down to where the entrance was. It was easily a couple hundred feet away. Every five seconds I could hear a car passing by at maybe sixty miles per hour. It was so dark that I couldn't even see my friends unless I shined the light towards them.
"How long do you think it will be until this guy comes?" Hikari asked Danny, tensing up and she looked around her frantically.
"He will be here before we know it", Danny replied, shining his flashlight around.
"Can't you use your powers to see when he will come?" Tyler asked, trying to keep himself warm in his thin jacket.
"My powers don't work like the others. I can't just make them happen. It comes to me when it needs to or when something is about to happen that I need to kno-"
Danny abruptly paused as he intensely stared off at the entrance, shining his light there.
"What's up?" I asked with furrowed eyebrows, shining my light from him towards the entrance.
"They're coming..."
"Who?!", Kimberly asked urgently, shining her light at him, blinding him out of his trance.
"The rangers. They are coming! We have to leave, now!" He yelled before leaving the path and swiftly sprinting into the trees. Quickly me and the others followed.
Running through the forest, I forced myself through branches, bushes and even tripped once. My face grew hotter as my breathing grew heavy. I felt like my heart was about to burst out of my chest as it began to burn. The sound of leaves crunching under our feet filled my ears.
I started to wonder if I could keep up, but after seeing Hikari collapse in fatigue, I stopped running all together.
"Come on Hikari, we have to go!", I grunted, pulling her back on her feet.
"I-I can't", she said between breaths.
"Then get on my back," I said, squatting down. She grabbed onto my shoulders before I stood up, grabbing ahold of her legs.
I began sprinting again. Turning back around, I could see the yellow flashing lights of a ranger truck approaching our van.
It wasn't long before we stopped running and hid behind a tree trunk.
"Oh shit, where are we?", Danny muttered as he looked around frantically. The panic threw us off the pathway real quick.
"Excuse me? We better not be lost Danny!" Kimberly scowled as she glared at him.
"I had a vision that the rangers were coming for the night shift and I didn't want them to see us, so we had to get out of dodge".
"Wait a second, wait a second. You had us running for our lives because of night rangers coming in for work? You had me thinking it was the damn police or something!", I said in frustration, letting Hikari down. "God, why do you have to overexaggerate everything?"
"If those rangers saw us, they would've turned us into the police and lord knows what they would've done to us! Overexaggerating?! I wasn't overexaggerating with W.E.A, the extermination or-"
"Oh my god, if you mention those events again I'm going to scream," I groaned, pinching my nose bridge.
He always used that against us. I was sick of being reminded of how he helped with this and saved us from that as if we owed him something for helping. If he wasn't my brother-in-law I would've stop talking to him all together.
"Just stop!" Hikari yelled.
Silence filled all around us.
"I'm tired of you two always arguing. It's like we're back in that stupid shelter!" She tearfully yelled before collapsing onto the ground, hugging her knees. Tears flew down her face like a waterfall. One after another.
I sighed, realizing how pointless the arguing was. It wasn't going to lead anywhere but to a possible physical fight.
"Hikari. It's okay. Everything will be okay. We're going to get your brother back. Focus on that. Not on these two knuckle heads", Celosia comforted, sitting next to Hikari as she rubbed her back. Celosia's eyes focused over to me, glaring.
I sighed.
"Alright. I'm sorry. I should've controlled my temper. Let's just keep moving. There has to be a way out of here," I apologized to Danny half-heartedly before beginning to walk again, flashing my flashlight forward.
With some hesitation everyone else followed, even Danny.
Danny and I had a very funny relationship. Some days we were cool, other days we're arguing about something. Our personalities always clashed. I was a go-with-the flow kind of teenager who had a relaxed vibe. I dealt with things as they come. He was and still is an intense guy who always gave bad news and prepared for the worst of future events. The nervous energy started to impact me. I hated it. Even Thomas didn't bring that much nervous energy, I rather him date Isabella. I'm surprised they didn't have feelings for each other when we were younger.
Finding out that Danny and Isabella were in a relationship about four years ago was one of the best and worst moments of my life. Best because my older sister finally had a boyfriend. Worst because she was dating...him. And now that they have a baby on the way, he was basically with us for life.
It took about a couple minutes of walking straightforward before we all heard the sudden noise of bushes shuttering from the right side. Mind you, it wasn't windy.
"What was that?" I loudly whispered, backing up from the nearby bushes. Me and the group huddled together. I, along with Gaia, Kimberly, Celosia got our powers ready.
The sound of branches cracking and footsteps became closer and closer as we saw what appeared to be an outline of a person.
"Don't use your powers until we find out who that is", Danny said to us.
I feared that it was a ranger who was ready to turn us in to the cops. If so, we may never see our families again. But to our benefit, it wasn't a ranger, or at least I didn't think it was. He didn't look an itch of threatening.
It was just a blonde, tall man in casual clothing.
