ch. XVI -- Gravity
After that scolding talk with Merlin and occasional side note from agent Galahad, Sophie had a few more rules that she couldn't bend at her own will.
"You were told not to interact with them." Merlin had said while she was sitting down in dining hall.
"I know, sir." Sophie mumbled.
"Since this is your first warning, consequences will be low." Merlin said looking at his data pad. Sophie looked up at him waiting for her punishment.
"You can stay and live in mansion until the training is over. But you and all the candidates for that matter have curfew." Merlin explained.
"Curfew? Like a sixteen year old child?" Sophie asked.
"No. A curfew like a twenty year old." Galahad corrected her.
"Thanks for explaining, Galahad." Sophie rolled her eyes.
"It's simple and it shouldn't give you any trouble. After 23:30 no walking around the ground levels till 6 in the morning." Merlin said.
"And what if I need to work later?" Sophie asked.
"Simple. You came to me for clearance." Merlin explained. Sophie nodded and got up to leave.
"And Sector B is off limits for you, young lady." Harry added.
"Trainees' quarters? You think I'll go there and pick a fight with that Charlie guy?" Sophie snorted.
"You tend to be unpredictable, Miss Richards." Harry said.
"Don't worry, he'll be fine. I won't touch him." Sophie said turning to look at both men.
"Before you leave, just explain what you were doing in the quarters at five in the morning." Merlin wanted to know and sat down.
"Nothing." Sophie answered nonchalantly.
"Well, I have different information on that." Merlin pointed at his data pad.
"What did they tell you?" Sophie carefully asked. She was pretty sure that Merlin already knew, what she was doing there.
"Richards. Answer the question. You are stalling our work right now." Harry asked.
"Just say what did they tell you and I will say if it's true or not." Sophie said leaning against one of the chairs.
"You were there to wake them up, that's what you told them." Merlin answered.
"Yeah. That's it." Sophie turned around to leave.
"There was more to it." Merlin stated.
"Probably." Sophie grinned and walked to the door.
"Elizabeth." Harry called her by her second name, her mother's name. There were few people that called her like that: her dad after her mother's death, her mother when she was in trouble and Harry Hart.
Sophie stopped in the doors but didn't turn around.
"If he's out, you more likely will never see him again and if he gets the position, you know – no attachments." Harry reminded.
And the fact that Sophie knew whom Harry was speaking about made her heart freeze painfully in her chest.
"Stop this dancing before anyone of you gets hurt." He pointed out.
And Sophie wanted to curse every single one of the gods that were above her, for knowing how right he was and how scared she was for herself.
She knew awfully well how destructing and hurtful it is to lose someone you keep close to your heart.
"Then I'll stay as far as possible." She murmured and with a nod left the room.
Yeah, well, shit didn't go according to the plan.
Some mythical gods had played her good. Because she always found herself gravitating back to Eggsy. As if he was the Earth itself that kept her steady on the ground. Even if she didn't plan on it. It didn't matter how it happened, were it be just passing in corridor while walking with Merlin and talking about new suits just to steal quick glances at that handsome boy to receive smirk and if she was lucky enough then maybe even a wink from Eggsy; or even just to stand on balcony with her sketchbook and watch upon training in the field.
It brings her to one late evening. Well past that damned curfew time. She was listening to quiet music in her room and reading some fashion magazines, having her sketchbook near her, she hummed away her night when there was a knock on her door. Furrowing her brows Sophie took her phone and looked at time. Who could want something from a tailor this late? Tying her robe closed she got up from her bed, yawned once and went to look who dared to disturb her. Slowly unlocking the door and peeping through it she was flabbergasted to see the person standing there.
"You are not supposed to be here." Sophie murmured not opening doors any wider.
"I thought you'd want JB..." Eggsy trailed off. Sophie let her eyes wander to the dog in his arms. Opening the doors wider she turned around and went back into her room.
"Love your make-up, Unwin." Sophie said sitting back on her bed and returning to her magazine.
"Or is it facial for the night?" She snickered again, glancing at the camouflage paint all over his face.
"You are just jealous that you don't have it." Eggsy said sitting in chair near the window.
"Clearly. Would look great with my new suit I'm designing." Sophie said half-distractedly.
It was the first real talk they had shared in week or two. For a moment they sat in comfortable silence.
"Urgghh.." Sophie groaned, making Eggsy look at her.
"God, I can't..." She pulled on her hair.
"What?" Eggsy asked.
"I can't concentrate on anything with you sitting there like.." Sophie was searching for words.
"Sitting like what?" Eggsy smirked.
"Like green salad bowl." Sophie said pointedly. Getting up from her bed she asked for him to fallow her to bathroom.
"Next time don't come to my room looking all green and stuff." Sophie said grabbing a towel and motioning Eggsy to sit on a counter next to sink. Dipping the towel in warm water Sophie stood between Eggsy's legs and cleaned the war-paint off his face.
"What's so interesting?" Sophie asked when she noticed Eggsy looking somewhere. Turning her head to her left and looking down, she saw JB tilting his head to the side and looking at pair oddly.
"Even JB doesn't recognize his dad." Sophie chuckled and returned to clean the paint.
"If I'm his dad, are you his mum?" Eggsy's eyes shot up to look at Sophie. Sophie froze for a second, not sure how to respond. Keeping one hand on Eggsy's chin and with other damping the towel again she calmly responded with dry mouth:
"If we are playing divorced parents, sure."
"Our child is weird looking." Eggsy said deep in thought. At that Sophie bursted out laughing.
"Did you call our child ugly?" Sophie swatted him playfully on shoulder.
"No, just weird." Eggsy smiled at her.
"But we love you either way, JB." Sophie cooed at the pug.
"You'r' adopted." Eggsy said after a brief moment.
"NO!" Sophie shouted laughing her ass of and sitting on bathroom floor to pet JB.
"Don't listen what he says." She murmured to the dog ruffling it's fur.
