Chapter 38- Show Off (Part 2)

ISAAC'S P.O.V

Have you ever seen a burning building? When fire spreads... it spreads fast. It's ruthless. Merciless.

I felt a pair of hands pull me back from the flames. I turned to see Camryn. "Isaac, get back!"

I couldn't get something out of my head. The last thing I saw before everything just became a blur of faces. "No...", I whispered. "No, Eli's still in there!"

Camryn nodded. "We know. The fire brigade is on its way. They'll get Eli out. He'll... he'll be ok."

I shook my head, shrugging Camryn's hands off me. "No... they won't get there in time."

I don't know what came over me. Maybe it was seeing his face, his countless words of encouragement.

Or maybe I just had enough of the Universe taking people away from me.

But I ran. I ran into the burning building, desperate to save Eli.

Several people tried to stop me, most of which I pushed to the side. I'd apologise later.

Thick smoke filled the air, preventing me from seeing properly. The heat from nearby flames hurt my skin. I should've worn a long sleeved shirt.

"ELI!", I yelled, coughing from inhaling smoke. "Eli, can you hear me? It's Isaac. Where are you?"

I was about to delve deeper into the building when I heard a faint sound.

"I-Isaac...Isaac.."

I whipped around, moving pieces of debris. My eyes widened when I saw Eli buried beneath them, his wheelchair completely broken. "Eli! I'm gonna get you out."

"It's not safe, Isaac", whispered Eli.

"I'm not leaving you!", I exclaimed. With all my strength, I pulled Eli up, letting him lean on me. "You're gonna be ok."

He groaned in pain as we started to move. Luckily, he wasn't too far into the building, so he didn't have to walk that much. Unable to carry him any longer, I fell to the ground, sighing in relief as people rushed to us.

"Th-thank you Isaac", said Eli, gripping my hand.

-

"Rhys? Rhys!", yelled Stanley, fear in his voice. He couldn't find him anywhere. Everything spun around him as he tried to calm his nerves.

Instinctively, Stanley ran towards the burning building, determined to save Rhys.

"Woah, woah, what are you doing?", asked Darius, pulling him back. "Are you crazy?"

"Rhys is still in there!", yelled Stanley.

Darius shook his head. "No, he's not. He's with Weronika and Meredith."

Stanley exhaled sharply, relieved to know Rhys was ok. Darius frowned as he watched his friend, a worried look on his face.

"Oh my God, you're ok!", said Rhys, rushing towards Stanley and hugging him.

Stanley was surprised at the contact but didn't object. Instead, he hugged Rhys back.

-

"Have you seen her anywhere?", asked Maxon, talking to random people about Kennedy.

His eyes widened when he saw Eli and he ran to him, Leonie closely behind. "Eli! Dude, thank God you're ok."

"K-Kennedy... she went back to save me. She's... she's still in there", said an exhausted Eli.

Maxon's eyes widened and he was about to run when Leonie stopped him. "Stay here and make sure everyone's ok."

"No, I need t-"

"- Stay here!", exclaimed Leonie, her tone so serious that Maxon nodded in agreement.

Leonie clenched her fists and ran towards the building. Miss Laine grabbed her, holding her back. "No Leonie, it's not safe!"

"Get off!", yelled Leonie, pushing Miss Laine into someone nearby. Her eyes widened when she realised what she had done.

She decided to face the consequences later. Covering her mouth with her top, Leonie dodged the flames, narrowly missing falling debris.

"Kennedy!", exclaimed Leonie, gasping as she inhaled a lot of smoke. "Kennedy it's Leonie!"

"H-Help!", yelled a voice Leonie recognised anywhere. Leonie rushed to the voice, her eyes widening when she saw her.

Kennedy's body was trapped under a large piece of a table, along with several other objects. Unable to lift it, Leonie groaned in frustration.

"Go, Elle... I don't think this place will hold for much longer", said Kennedy.

Leonie shook her head. "No. No I'm not leaving you, ok? I'm not leaving you here, I'm gonna get you out."

Kennedy coughed, her eyes opening and closing slowly. "Please... go."

"No!", yelled Leonie, her voice breaking with emotion. "No, I'm not gonna go. It's you and me Kennedy... ok? You and me through everything."

Leonie took off her jacket, handing it to Kennedy. "Wrap yourself in this. I'll give you my trousers too-"

"- No, Leonie..."

"Look, I know it's not the best but we have to make due with what we have. I've got my dance clothes on underneath, I'll be fine", said Leonie.

Kennedy nodded and wrapped herself in the clothes as best she could. "Why'd you come, Leonie?"

"Like I said...", she started, before reaching out for her hand. "... it's you and me through everything."

Leonie grabbed Kennedy's other hand and tried to pull her out of the rubble. When that failed, she started hitting the pieces, attempting to break them into smaller pieces.

By this time, Leonie had grown weak, and struggled to keep her eyes open.

"Leonie, it's ok... you can stop", said Kennedy, tears rolling down her face.

Leonie shook her head. "N-No..."

-

Everyone watched in horror as more of the building was engulfed in flames. Suddenly, the fire grew rapidly, like an explosion.

As the smoke started to clear, no one emerged.

Sirens blared as the fire brigade arrived, rushing into the building.

"Have they come out yet?", asked Camryn, though the tears in her eyes showed she knew the answer.

Isaac shook his head, tears rolling down his face.

Two fire fighters emerged, holding two people. The group were too far away to tell who they were, but hoped they'd be ok regardless.

They looked very still.

Carrie marched towards Miss Laine, two Police Officers beside her. "Some nerve you have! I know we don't like each other but this is a new low!"

"What are you talking about?"

"The fire started in a room that was previously locked. A room I saw you walk out of moments before the fire started."

Carrie grabbed Miss Laine's bag, throwing everything on the floor until she found what she was looking for. "I knew it! This is the key!"

"Miss Adelaine Laine, you are under arrest on the suspicion of arson. You have the right to remain silent and anything you do say can be used against you in the court of law."

-

Hi!

Miss Laine started the fire?

What about Kennedy and Leonie?

What will happen to Eli now that he's suffered another injury?

What are your thoughts on this chapter?
