AMETHYST'S P.O.V
I hate my life.
Why did I have to lose the parent that I needed now more than ever?
What did I do so wrong that meant I couldn't have my Mum with me anymore?
I stared at my reflection in the mirror, each tear that stained my cheek reminding me of the day my Mum breathed her last.
"Mum? Mum, I-I don't know if you can hear me, but I really need you right now."
I closed my eyes and listened to the silence, hoping to hear her voice.

"You chose Amethyst?", questioned Camryn.
Eli raised his hands defensively. "Camryn, I had to do what I thought was right."
"But Amethyst? She's been bullying Leonie the minute she joined this club!
I don't get what you see in her", said Camryn.
Eli sighed.
"She's hurting, Camryn.
I don't know how or why but... she's not being herself."
"What and you think you can save her?
'Eli the Saviour'?"
Eli shrugged.
"I-I really don't know.
I hope so."
Camryn scoffed, before furrowing her eyebrows. She looked up at Eli once more.
"Is that how you see me?"
Eli furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.
"What?"
"Was I just a charity case to you?
Did you only become my friend so you could save me?", she asked.
"Camryn, no! Of course I..."
Camryn's eyes widened.
"You did, didn't you?"
Eli frowned.
"No, I... I became your friend because I thought you were interesting.
Then I got to know you more and, yes, I did think I could save you.
But only because I knew the real you was in there all along!
Then... then it didn't matter to me anymore.
I just wanted to be your friend regardless of the walls you put up.
Eli couldn't tell her about the secret feelings he had harboured for her for years. She was happy with Leonie, and he was happy for them.
There was no point in talking about ancient history.
"Eli, just, answer me this.
Do you think I'm a charity case?"
"No", he said quickly.
He was so confident in his answer that he didn't even need to think about it.
Camryn exhaled softly, a small smile appearing on her face.

Leonie's Mum wrapped an arm around her daughter, gently stroking her hair with her free hand. "Sweetheart, it's not your fault."
"I called her pathetic, Mum."
Leonie's Mum sighed, but didn't say anything.
"I'm a bad person, Mum."
Her Mum's eyes widened. She looked at her daughter, making Leonie lift her head up.
"Now you listen here, Leonie.
Don't you ever say you're a bad person."
"But it's true! It's why Dad left, isn't it?"
Her Mum sighed.
"Oh, Leonie..."
Leonie's lip quivered as she looked into her Mum's eyes.
"He left because of me."
"No, Leonie.
He didn't.
Your Dad left because he couldn't handle being a Dad.
It wasn't your fault."
"I walked past his house Mum.
And I saw his little girl."
"What? When?"
"A couple months ago.
She was in the front garden.
She was sad because her Mum was working and her Dad was supposed to do her hair for a friend's birthday party."
"Then what happened?"
"Mum, I was happy.
I was happy that this little girl was let down by him.
I was happy that it wasn't just me. God, Mum, I'm a terrible person!"
Leonie's Mum shook her head.
"No, love.
You're not.
You were just relieved that it wasn't your fault.
I should've done more to make sure you knew that.
I'm the terrible person."
Somehow, hearing her Mum say that didn't help.
She was fine saying it about herself, but it infuriated her to hear her Mum say it.
"Are you serious, Mum?
How can you say that?
No matter how hard things got, you stayed!
Don't say you're a terrible person!"
Leonie's Mum looked into her daughter's eyes.
A small smile appeared on her face, and Leonie realised that her Mum needed to hear that.
"We don't need him, Leonie.
Not when we've got each other", said her Mum.
Leonie's Mum kissed her forehead, making Leonie smile.
A wave of realisation crashed over Leonie, and she stood up.
"Where are you going?"
"To see someone."
"Why?"
"To be the daughter you raised."

Amethyst stared at the plate of cookies in front of her.
Her brother made them for her, but they weren't nearly as tasty as the one's her Mum made.
Still. He tried.
A knock on the door made Amethyst wipe away her tears.
"C-Come in."
A sheepish Leonie walked into her room, making Amethyst almost choke on the piece of cookie in her mouth.
"Your brother let me in", she said.
"What are you doing here?"
Leonie walked closer to her, before pointing to the empty space next to her.
"Can I sit here please?"
Amethyst just shrugged.
Leonie took that as a yes, and she sat down beside her.
"I'm sorry I called you pathetic.
I shouldn't have said that.
It's not true."
"It's fine.
You showed your true colours."
"Why do you keep saying that?
I made a mistake, but I've been nothing but nice to you before today."
"And today, you slipped up."
"What happened, Amethyst?
Why do you find it so hard to trust people?"
Amethyst finally made eye contact with Leonie.
"Because people like you use people like me.
For my money, for my status.
You pretend like you're my friend but you're not."
"I don't care about your money.
I don't need yours", said Leonie. "Did... did someone use you like that in the past?"
Amethyst sighed.
"Yes.
My so called 'best friend.'
She helped me out a lot but... then I found out she was only my friend because I bought her lots of things."
Leonie frowned.
"That's awful!
Friendship's about way more than stuff like that."
Amethyst rolled her eyes.
"You can drop the act now."
"I'm not acting."
Amethyst was taken aback by the surety in her voice.
Maybe it was just because she was so emotionally drained, but Amethyst really didn't think she was lying.
"Do you want to know why I trust people all the time?"
"Not really but you're going to tell me anyway."
"When my Dad left, it was really hard. I just felt this... emptiness.
It really messed me up.
I promised myself I wouldn't let myself feel like that again.
So, I... I trust everyone.
I'm so scared of being alone. "
Amethyst had no idea Leonie felt like this.
Despite being the resident 'loner' of the group, Amethyst didn't like being alone either.
It just gave her more time to be alone with her thoughts.
"That's... that's how I felt when my Mum died."
Leonie's face softened.
"I knew she passed away, but... I had no idea you were struggling this much.
I'm so sorry, I should've noticed."
Amethyst rolled her eyes.
"God, why do you have to do that?"
"Do what?"
"Be nice.
Especially now.
I... I don't think you're faking it."
"I'm going to be here, Amethyst.
You can think what you want to, hate me all you want to, but I'm not leaving."
"Why? Why are you here, Leonie?"
Leonie frowned.
"Because when I was at my lowest, do you know who I ran to?
My Mum.
You couldn't run to yours."
Tears filled up in Amethyst's eyes.
"I don't... I don't need your pity."
"It's not pity.
No one should feel lonely.
I don't want you to be sad, Amethyst."
Amethyst blinked as the tears rolled down her face. Her hoarse voice dissolved into a whisper.
"Nothing feels good without her."
Leonie's face softened and she pulled Amethyst into a hug.
To her surprise, Amethyst melted into the hug, resting her head against Leonie's shoulder.

Amethyst and Leonie are a lot more alike than they think, and I really enjoyed exploring that.
What are your thoughts on Leonie's part with her Mum?
What are your thoughts on Leonie and Amethyst's conversation at the end?
How do you feel about Amethyst now?
How do you feel about Leonie now?
What are your thoughts on this chapter?
