Ch. 18: His Letters

Luz's eyes began to open and she saw that she was in a hospital room, with an oxygen mask over her face.

"I-I'm in the hospital?" Luz asked, looking around to see a pile of "Get Well" baskets and cards in a side counter, "What happened? How long was I out?"

"Almost a month." Amity said, coming in the room, "If you ever scare me like that again, I'm going to kill you."

"Amity, your arm." Luz said.

Amity looked at her arm, which had very bad burns on it.

"It's fine." Amity said.

Amity walked to the bed and sat next to Luz, right as Ghost came out of her jacket and snuggle in her lap.

"Mama!" Ghost said, "You're up!"

"Amity... what happened?" Luz asked.

Amity gained a sad look as she remembered that day, still fresh in her mind even after a month had passed.

"After we separated, I ran off to find Ghost before finding your dad. I.....I almost lost her but somehow, I healed her." Amity said, gazing towards Ghost.

"That's good, I know how important Ghost is to you." Luz said, "A-a-and my dad?"

Amity gave Luz a sad look.

"Luz... I'm sorry."

"No... please no." Luz said.

"They buried him in the empty grave that was meant to be his." Amity said.

Luz looked down unable to hold her tears in.

"Luz, he... he wanted me to give you this."

Luz looked over and saw the box he was holding when Amity found him. Luz took it and looked down at it. She opened it and saw several pieces of paper. She grabbed on and looked at it.

'To Luz, I know you're still very young while I'm writing this, and I know growing up without me will be hard, especially because you will have most likely inherited our families ability. But I want you to know, that I love you, I will never stop loving you, and the reason I may never see you again, is because I'm doing what I need to in order to make sure you can live in a world your gift can be used to its fullest. It will be hard work, but it will be worth it.'

Luz put that letter down and then grabbed another.

'Luz, it's been seven years since I have disappeared from your life. I don't know if you hate me or if you even remember me, but I think it's time for you to know about the legend of our gift. It is said, that our ancestors were part of an ancient native tribe, one that managed to make piece with animals they shared the world with. It is said that they were given the ability to speak with the animals from the animal gods and they vowed to help animals live. Do I believe it? I don't know, but I do know we have a gift, and I know you will do great work with it.'

Luz spent the next hour looking through the letters until she came upon the last one. This one was covered in ash and dirt.

'Luz, I'm not going to make it, I've come to terms with it and I'm ready to head to whatever awaits me, but as the fires stop and the ash fills the sky, I want to use my last breath to tell you the words I didn't get to say to you. I'm proud of you. You've exceeded all expectations I could've imagined. I am proud that you are helping animals, i am proud that you have put the gift to use, I am most proud... that you lived your life the way you wanted. I am so glad to have been able to have a daughter like you, and nothing will ever change that. I know you never got to tell me yourself, but I know you loved me, as much as I loved you. Goodbye my little light, tell your mother that I wish her well with her spouse.'

Luz put the letters in the box and Amity looked at her as she cried.

"Luz, are you okay?"

"Amity." Luz looked at Amity with a smile, "I've never been better. I'm going to keep going. I'm going to do what my dad did and keep helping animals of this world, I'm gonna keep going and not stop until every animal is safe."

Luz looked at the TV, which showed the news.

"-And in a rare display of unification, people from around the world have donated millions to help with the damages of the Amazon fire, which is now been declared as protected land."

"And it looks like I'm no longer the only one." Luz said with a smile.
