Ch. 8: Second Home

"H-Hi, dad. And yes, I am Amity." Amity said, a little nervous.

Alador had to lean against a wall. This girl was well into adulthood, but he will be damned if he didn't recognize his own daughter. He remembered those eyes, he vowed that he would see her again.

"I... I don't believe it." Alador said, "W... where have you been?"

"I... spent the past 21 years in the Human World, with no memory apart from my name." Amity said.

"21 years? It's...It's even longer than I thought it was." Alador said as he slowly walked to Amity. "But look at you, you've grown into a fine woman. I've missed so much of your life." Alador looked at Amity's engagement ring, "Please... tell me I haven't missed your wedding yet."

Amity smiled a bit at his worry, almost like it was familiar to her.

"No, you didn't. We're still planning." Amity said.

"Oh, thank Titan." Alador said before gesturing to the inside. "Why don't we head inside and talk some more? I can have an abomination fetch some refreshments."

"Uh... will I be able to eat the stuff here?" Amity asked, "I've eaten human food for over twenty years."

"We can try." Alador said.

"As long as it doesn't have meat, I'll do my best." Amity said.

"Yeah, she's a vegetarian." Eda said with a groan as she walked into the mansion.

Amity walked inside, looking at the paintings on the walls. There was one, Alador with two other kids, while holding a baby in his arms, but that wasn't what got her attention, it was what was on the shelf below it that surprised her.

"Is that... Odalia's ashes?" Amity asked.

"Yes, h-h-how do you know about that?" Alador asked, "Eda never explained, she just dropped the urn off."

Amity looked to Eda as she walked into the kitchen of the mansion.

"She.....tried to bring me back a couple of months ago. She kidnapped me and tried to convince me that my life there was a waste." Amity said to Alador.

"That doesn't surprise me." Alador said, "Ever since I divorced her, she's fallen down a pit that I didn't think she would get out of."

"So... why keep her ashes?" Amity asked.

"To her, our marriage was loveless, but while she might not have loved me, I loved her, even if she was crazy, a part of me will always love her." Alador said, "I cannot bring myself to getting rid of her ashes."

Amity looked down, she wonders how different things might've been if she was here and not in the Human World.

"But that's beside the point." Alador said, "I think it's time for the twins to see their long-lost sister."

"Twins? They're still living here?" Amity asked him.

"Yes. After you vanished and the divorce, they didn't want to leave me alone in this big house." Alador said to her.

"They blamed themselves for you disappearing." Alador said, "What I was told, was there was a loose monster and they said to hide... I... I thought you were killed."

"So... an animal here is what led to me ending up in the Human World?" Amity said, "That's... kind of Ironic."

"Ironic how?" Alador asked.

"She works at a zoo in the human world. One with giraffes!" Eda said as she came from the kitchen, holding a bottle of wine and a glass. "In fact, she's in charge of the giraffes."

"I think you guys are blowing them out of proportion, they're sweet animals." Amity said.

"That's because you don't know the history of those monsters." Alador said.

"I've raised most of them." Amity said.

"Raised them?!" Alador shouted in shock.

"Yep. That's a shock, I'll tell you what." Eda said as she poured herself a glass.

"When you gain the trust of an animal, there is nothing that will break it." Amity said, "Now moving on, what's this about my siblings?"

"Both very talented illusionists. They'll be happy to see you." Alador said to her, drawing a spell circle to summon an abomination with a bow tie. "Go get Edric and Emira. They need to be here."

The abomination servant bowed to him before going off to fetch the twins.

"So that's abomination magic?" Amity says, looking to the purple mud golem. "Eda told me a bit about it, but I've never seen it until now."

"When you first began to use magic, you used to make little abominations." Alador said, "I remember your hands getting cold easily so I would make you little Abomination mittens... we used to call you Mittens."

"Mittens?" Amity repeated as a sense of familiarity washes over her. "Hmm, I think I like that nickname."

The abomination reached their rooms and let them know their father wanted them for something.

They walked down the stairs.

"You called?" Emira asked.

"Yes, I want to tell you something." Alador said.

"Why is the Owl Lady here?" Edric asked, "You guys aren't getting married, are you?"

"Me and Al?" Eda asked, "Please, that would never happen. Besides, I already got a wife."

"So, why did you call for us?" Emira asked.

"I wanted to introduce you both to..." Alador said as he steps aside, revealing Amity. ".....your little sister, Amity."

The twins looked at her, trying not to cry.

"A... Amity?" Emira said, "It... It can't be."

The twins hugged her and began crying. Amity was surprised by how tight they hugged her, but it just felt so good to be held in their embrace as she slowly hugged them back, smiling to them.

"I-I never thought we'd see you again!" Edric shouted.

"We thought you were gone! Where have you been all this time!?" Emira asked her sister.

"Well... I was in the Human Realm." Amity said, "It wasn't until a few months ago that I learned I wasn't human."

"Her mom came to hire me to find Amity and help bring her back, but I changed my mind when I remembered how much of a bitch she was." Eda explained.

"So... now that I'm here, can someone explain this place to me?" Amity asked.

"The Boiling Isles or our house?" Edric asked as they broke the head.

"Our house, it looks like our family is rich here." Amity said, looking around the interior.

"We are, we have a company of home self-defense items." Alador said.

"Weapons." Eda said, covering it with a cough.

"In a world that everything can kill you, a weapon is a good item." Alador said, "Besides, like I don't know about your weapons room at your house?"

"Touché but your weapons are deadlier and can be fired from a distance. Like your goo cannon/flamethrower." Eda said to Alador.

"Regardless, I would like to hear more about what Amity's been doing since she arrived in the Human Realm." Alador said, "Who's been taking care of you?"

"I was adopted by a kind and caring couple, the Andersons." Amity said as she reached into her back pocket, pulling out her wallet and showing them a picture of Amity with her adopted parents. "They took me in after they found me crying in the streets, lost and confused. I've grown up in San Diego, have an apartment with my Fiancé, and work at the San Diego Zoo as the Giraffe Keeper." Amity said, 'And that's really all I have to say."

"You're getting married!?" The twins said in shock.

"Yep! To my stepdaughter, a human that can somehow talk and understand animals." Eda said as she finished her first glass of wine.

"A magical human?" Alador asked with interest.

"No idea where it comes from. She said she's just been able too since she was a child." Eda said, "Alright, I reunited your family, so don't pull some kind of bullshit and say Jewish weddings lack alcohol."

"Luz and I are still talking about that." Amity said, "We don't know if we'll do a Christian style wedding, Jewish style, or just have a non-religious related ceremony."

"Christian? Jewish?" Emira asked.

"Those are some weird sounding religions." Edric said.

"Do not get started on that. It's a whole thing with the human realm." Eda said.

"Speaking of the Human World, we need to get back there." Amity said, "I have work tomorrow."

"But we just got you back." Edric said.

"Hey, I have an idea." Emira said, "What if we hang out with Amity at work tomorrow?"

"Huh?" Amity let out in surprise.

"Yeah, why not? We can just disguise ourselves as humans and come to work with you. See how you are as a zookeeper. Maybe even meet your fiancé." Edric said.

"That does sound like a promising idea. I can also use one of my many vacation days." Alador said with a nod.

"Well... I don't know." Amity said, "I know you probably won't meet Luz because she had to go across the country for a few days."

"Really? Well, we could still come and see this human zoo." Alador said.

Amity thought about it for a minute.

"Okay, I'll call Eda tomorrow and let her know to bring you over." Amity said.

"Amity, please." Alador said, "Just... stay here... for one night."

He couldn't let Amity leave just yet, Alador wanted to get to know her more before the night ends.

"Hmm, I don't know. It doesn't seem like a bad thing, but...." Amity said.

"Oh, just sleep over, you big baby! Your little commute time will be fine." Eda said as she poured herself a third glass of wine.

"Okay... I will." Amity said, "Does... anyone want to show me to a room?"

"I'll do it!" Emira and Edric said, laughing a bit.

Alador looked at Eda.

"Thank you, for bringing her back."

Eda gave a small smile as she shrugged her shoulders.

"Eh, your ex hired me to do that anyway. At least this time it's for the right reason." Eda said as she finished her last glass of wine for the night, number 4.

The twins led to a room.

"This was yours before you disappeared." Emira said.

The twins hugged her.

"We just can't believe you're back." They said.

"....Me either." Amity said as she hugged them back, slowly smiling. "I never thought I'd have siblings but it feels surprisingly nice."

The two didn't let go, not wanting this dream to end like they feared it would. Amity felt the same but knew it had to end eventually or else she wouldn't be able to wake up to get ready for work.

'Hmm, it's crazy since we're adults but...' Amity thought.

"Do you guys.....wanna have a sleep over?" Amity asked them.

"Yes!" They said.

They would jump at the chance spend more time with Amity, even sleeping over which they could never do as kids.

"We're going to spend the night together, we're going to bond with you, and we're never going to let you go." Emira said. "I can't believe you're actually here!"

"Me either and I know this might seem creepy, but we're doing this out of love! We're just so happy you're back, Mittens!" Edric said.

"I get that, but could you guys let go? The hug is starting to hurt." Amity said to them.

They dropped the hug, before bringing her to the bed.

"So, tell us everything about the Human Realm."

"Yeah, what's it like compared to here? Eda must've told you a bit about the isles, right?" Emira asked as she and Edric sat in both sides of Amity.

"A bit yes." Amity said to them.

"There's... I don't really know, it's not easy to describe what's in my world, because everyone really knows what it's like." Amity said.

"Then just tell us some small thing, like what color is your sky?" Edric suggested.

"Blue." Amity said.

"Cool. What's the weather like? I assume it's better than the plagues we have here." Emira said.

"Plagues? The weather here are like plagued?" Amity asked.

"Yeah but it's nothing big. Boiling Rain, Shale Hale, Gorenados, and Painbows." Emira listed off.

"God and Titan help me, that is your god here, right?" Amity quickly asked as Edric nodded. "Thanks, God and Titan help me but WHAT is a Painbow?"

"If you look at it, you will turn inside out." Edric said.

Amity paled at this, gagging a bit as she imagined it and regretted it.

'I wonder if Luz is being disgusted just as much as I am right now?' Amity thought as she put a hand over her mouth.

"Anything else I should know that kills me?" Amity said.

The twins looked towards each other before gazing back at Amity.

"How much time do you have?" They asked Amity.

"Suddenly I prefer to be back with my lovely long necked demons." Amity said.

The twins chuckled at her as they patted her shoulders.

"Don't worry. It's not as much as you think it is." Emira said to her.

"Still a lot though." Edric said.

'I wonder how Luz is doing.' Amity thought.
