Ch. 17: A New Friend
The next day, Amity woke up and got up. She went to her kitchen and was startled when Alador was there.
"Dad?! What are you doing here?" Amity asked.
"I have a gift for you." He said, moving a box towards her.
Amity opened it and saw a wooden cat inside.
"Oh... a statue." Amity said, "How... nice."
Amity picked it up and the eyes started glowing, making her drop it. Before it hit the ground, it became an actual cat. Amity was surprised, to say the least.
"Well, say hello." Alador said.
"Uh... hi." Amity said.
"Hello, Master Amity." The cat said.
Amity gasped and held the counter in shock, actually hearing the cat statue thing speaking to her in English.
"You understood her, don't you?" Alador asked, depending on her reaction.
"H-How? Your necklace didn't work." Amity said as she looked to him.
"It's your palisman. Amity, let me tell you a story. Years ago, shortly after you disappeared, this palisman became inactive. It remained that way until someone mentions your name. I had a good feeling that this palisman was meant to belong to you, and clearly, I was right." Alador said, enjoying the small smile that made its way to Amity's face, "Go on, keep talking to it."
Amity held up her new cat and smiled.
"So, what's your name?"
"I'm Ghost, Master Amity." Ghost said.
"Ghost, huh? That's a nice name but you don't have to call me master. Just call me "Amity."" Amity said as she scratched Ghost's chin, making her purr.
Ghost climbed Amity's pajama's and laid down on her shoulders. She licked Amity's cheek while purring.
"Your palisman is not just a companion you can understand flawlessly, but it can help you increase you magic power in learning and performing spells." Alador said to her, "Which will be good for when I begin to help you with it."
"Help?" Amity asked him.
"Eda said she would be busy, so I thought it would be a good way to bond and maybe teach you a little abomination magic if you wanted." Alador said as he held his hand out, letting a rat or mouse that looked like him crawl on to it. "This is my palisman, his name is Swiss."
'There is no way he isn't named after the cheese.' Amity thought.
"That... would be great." Amity said, "But I have to get ready for work."
"Then maybe afterwards." Alador said, accepting that she had work to do at the zoo.
Amity turned to go get ready, when she stopped for a second.
"Hey... do you... want to come with me to work?"
"Me?" Alador asked in surprise.
"Or me?" Ghost asked as she looked to Amity.
"Both." Amity said, "I... want to spend some time with you, dad, and maybe you can teach me how to use Ghost while I'm in the giraffe exhibit."
"Won't you get in trouble?" Alador asked.
"My parents send the zoo nearly a million dollars a year, they won't fire me if they want to keep that."
"Oh! Alright then." Alador said with some surprise.
He honestly didn't expect Amity's adoptive human parents to be rich as well.
"Alright, I'm going to get ready." Amity said, "I'll be back in a minute."
Alador nodded as he and Swiss waited in the den while Amity took Ghost with her to her room. Amity entered her room and nuzzled Ghost.
"Oh, you're so cute!" Amity said.
"Thank you, Amity. It feels wonderful to properly meet you and to be your palisman." Ghost said to her.
"Oh, I love you so much!" Amity said, giving Ghost a kiss, "Ah, Splinter!"
Ghost chuckled a bit at this, her master seemed to forget that she was made of wood.
"Allow me, Amity." Ghost said as her eyes lit up and she used her magic to remove the splinter.
"Thanks, Ghost." Amity said as she rubbed her lip.
"Can you sand a palisman, because you are very splinterly." Amity said.
"A little magic practice will help with that." Ghost said.
To prove her point, Ghost floated and transformed into a staff with Amity catching her by the handle.
"Whoa!" Amity let out as she stared at her new palisman in her staff form, "This is cool. Too bad I can't fly on you in the Human World."
'But I could take a fly at night. Maybe tonight.' Amity thought as she got ready for work.
Ghost purred a little as Amity held her staff, the two felt a connection. A connection that could finally grow as witch and palisman. Nay, as friends and family. She couldn't wait.
