Prologue (Age 14)
---------The attached picture is what I think Victoria should look like at the age of 14 (This is a pic of the girl who was cast as Renesmee in Twilight). Hope you enjoy the book, I will leave an authors note at the bottom of most chapters.----------
Every morning I wake up to my brother smiling at me the way our mother used to before she died, and right now not even those memories are keeping me happy because at this moment I know Tobias is taking the aptitude test which will help him decide his future. I can't focus on anything because I'm afraid to lose him, he is the only family I have in my eyes after our mother died because of our father who would beat all of us and continues to.
At the end of the day I am still worrying, not just about Tobias leaving me but because I know that when I walk through the door in the peaceful abnegation sector my father will be waiting. Usually I would wait for Tobias and we would walk home together, but today I don't know if he finished earlier or later than usual so I walked without him. All I can think about are his test results is he brave, selfless, intelligent, honest or kind? When I am almost to the lonely grey buildings of abnegation I hear a familiar voice behind me.
"Victoria", I turn to see who it is even though I'm sure its Tobias because he is the only person who really knows me.
"Tobias" I reply, "sorry I didn't wait for you, I wasn't sure if you had already left". I should have asked him about his test but I didn't want to disappoint myself.
"Victoria, it doesn't bother me if you don't wait because I know you always want to and you didn't know if I'd left, so I understand" he assures me.
Our house was on the far side of the abnegation sector and all the houses here are identical so it took a little longer to get home, and just before we did Tobias whispered "I want to be free of him, but I also don't want to leave you to be beaten". I knew he always wanted that but there was on word my mind held onto, that word was 'free'; I have to make sure he will be.
--------------------
When we get home, I walk inside and turn around to see Tobias stealing a moment; I think he got that from our mother because she always took these moments to forget about things. I do it too sometimes; i decide to leave him to his thoughts because he has a lot to think about. I close the door and see my father sitting in the living room surrounded by paperwork. I want to go to my room, maybe he'll let me go unnoticed, but I doubt it.
"Where is your brother?" is the only thing I hear come out of his mouth, before the door opens revealing Tobias.
"Son, nice of you to join us, both of you sit down" he adds in a scolding tone.
I cross the room to sit on the couch, carefully placing my feet so I don't knock over any piles of paper, Tobias joins me.
"Tell me about your aptitude test, what was your result?" he says while staring at Tobias. I watch Tobias, he looks like he doesn't want to tell our father but he knows he has to.
"Abnegation" Tobias answers.
"And nothing else?" our father say with a displeasing look.
When I hear him say that all I can think is how you can get more than one result is that even possible?
I think Tobias has the same idea as me because he quickly answers "no, of course not".
"So nothing strange happened with your test?" Marcus questions.
I have never liked the tone of voice he uses when he asks us questions, it scares me.
As always I look at Tobias when he is answering but this time he doesn't look the same, he looks like he is hiding something, I hope Marcus doesn't notice.
"No" Tobias says.
"Don't lie to me" Marcus near yells in the scary tone he always uses.
He grabs Tobias's arm tightly, neither of us look at him.
"I'm not; I got abnegation just as expected. The woman barely looked at me when I walked out. I promise" he struggles to say.
Marcus lets go of him.
"Good" he doesn't look pleased with what Tobias told him, how could he not be pleased with an abnegation result?
"I'm sure you have some thinking to do, you should go to your room, you to Victoria" something I'm finally glad he said.
"Yes, sir" we say in unison as we get up and cross the room, Tobias seems relieved.
"Also, some of my fellow council members are coming over tonight, so both of you should eat dinner early".
"Yes, sir" we again say in unison.
--------------------
Neither Tobias nor I enjoy Wednesday nights because our father has a council meeting, and we have to eat dinner before the sun goes down. We always have the same thing: a dinner roll, carrots, two slices of cheese, an apple and a small piece of chicken without seasoning. Everything tastes the same, Tobias says it tastes like dust and paste, I think I agree. We have to eat quickly or our father will scold us for being down here when his fellow council members arrive. Tobias is finishing a glass of water when I start to head upstairs; it is also the same time when the first council member knocks on the door. I find it funny when Tobias gets up and rushes to the stairs before the door is opened. Marcus waits with his hand on the doorknob for us to disappear, and then he opens it.
"Hello, Marcus" a voice Tobias and I recognize greets, its Andrew Prior.
We both look down the stairs at Andrew. On our way to school, we would walk past him and his family; himself, Natalie his wife, and his son and daughter, both the same age as me. They are always peaceful when we see them.
Natalie organises factionless volunteer efforts for the abnegation, I know this because Tobias told me about our mother doing this sometimes, and he tells me about our mother because I was really little when she died, so I didn't have very many memories of her.
Andrews's eyes meet ours, and we rush down the hallway.
Tobias invites me into his room before closing the door, and I agree because I don't want to be alone. His room is identical as mine, it's also identical to every bedroom in abnegation.
"Tobias, are you okay, you don't look like you are" I ask.
He just sits on his bed for a moment before he answers, he might have wanted to think of a decent response.
"Yes, Victoria, I'm alright there is no need to worry" he assures me.
He gets up and makes sure the door is closed, and puts his desk chair under the door knob. I think he wants to make sure Marcus can't get in.
"I want to show you something" he states before crouching down beside his bed.
"What is it?" I ask.
"It's something our mother gave me before she died" he answers
Our mother died about ten years ago, why is he only showing me now?
He begins to pull a suitcase out from under his bed, when he says "our mother told Marcus it was for spare blankets, but that's not what it's for. She told me to never let him see it, but I was allowed to show you."
As he slowly opens the suitcase I see many useless objects but one of them stands out. It's a sculpture, it has
blue droplets made of glass; I'm guessing it's meant to be water.
"It's beautiful, did she tell you where she found it" I say
"No, I don't think she did" he says.
I wish she did tell him where she found it, and I understand why our mother told him to hide it from Marcus, it's because it's a useless object therefore self-indulging.
"Tobias, is this the only reason you invited me in, to show me the sculpture" I ask curiously.
"Mostly, but I don't want to leave you alone with him" he says.
"I have been telling you all afternoon that you need to leave, I will make you leave because if you don't you will be stuck with him, don't let yourself live a bad life because you want to make sure I'm safe, because I can leave in two years and I will no matter what you choose, but I'm going to promise you something, I promise you that I will come to your visiting day, and I don't care what I have to do to come" I say, near crying.
"Victoria, you always find a way to help me, you don't need to come to visiting day, you don't need to do anything except let me know you are safe." He says almost cheerful, probably because he still feels guilty for having to leave me.
"I'm going to my room" I tell him as I begin to leave
"Goodnight" he says, even though neither of us will sleep for a while, it's because we won't see each other until morning.
"Goodnight" I reply with a smile, and walk out closing the door behind me.
--------------------
The meeting must be over because I don't hear a ruckus downstairs, which means soon Marcus, will be coming up to check on us and most likely beat us. I then hear thundering footsteps coming up the stairs, and they stop in front of my door. I'm glad he came to my room first because that means Tobias has enough time to hide all the stuff from the suitcase back under his bed, and the chair back at the desk if he hasn't already.
The door opens even though I wish it didn't.
"Were you in your brother's room during the meeting?" Marcus demands. He doesn't allow us into each other's rooms, he does sometimes but it's very rare.
"No" I answer trying to hide the truth, he is good at seeing when someone is lying, I don't know why because he was never candor, but I'm good at hiding the lies from him.
After I answer, he looks at me and walks out of the room locking the door behind him.
More pounding footsteps head towards Tobias's room, and when I hear a shaking door I know that he didn't put all the objects back in the suitcase and he must have forgotten about the chair being at the door, I know he's going to get hurt.
I don't hear much of what Marcus is saying to Tobias but I know it's not good.
"Are you trying to keep me out?" he says
I don't hear what Tobias says afterwards and I only hear Marcus because he always speaks loud or yells. I don't know how the neighbours don't hear him.
"What were you doing in here that you didn't want me to see?" Marcus questions.
I think it's okay because I stop hearing anything from his room, but I was wrong.
"What is this...what do you need with any of it?" I hear Marcus's voice grow louder.
Marcus found the suitcase. I can imagine Tobias right now; we are both terrified of our father and what he can do to us.
"It poisons this house with selfishness!" he yells at Tobias, and I hear a thud against the wall, Tobias could've collided with the desk.
"The choosing ceremony, dad!" I could hear Tobias yell fearfully.
"Fine, stay here" Marcus says in a voice that has always scared me. I hear footsteps walk past my room, and two minutes later I hear them come back up and into Tobias's bedroom.
I know what this means, he went downstairs to get a belt and whip Tobias on the back. As soon as I hear Marcus walk back into the other room, I hear the screams come, and they are his, Tobias, and I can't help because I am locked in here, all I do is cry, because it's the only thing I can do, before I fall asleep with screams running through my head.
The next morning I wake up early, just to wake Tobias up the way he has to me all these years. I sneak out of my room and go into his, walk over to his bed, lie on it and smile next to Tobias's face.
"Tobias, good morning, it's time to get up" I say trying to wake him.
He just grunts and pushes me off the bed. I know what I should do; it's time to push him off the bed.
"Hey, what was that for" he says, "why did you have to put me in more pain, I'm in enough already" he adds.
I forgot what happened to him last night.
"sorry, I forgot what he did to you, and I only wanted to wake you up the same way you have done for me since our mother died, but you pushed me off the bed" I say, laughing at the end.
"I should go have a shower and maybe even cut my hair" he says
"Yeah, I should go get dressed" I say walking out the door, "I'll meet you downstairs".
It takes a long time for Tobias to come downstairs and not long after I came down, Marcus went up, I hope he doesn't hurt Tobias any more than he already has, how could he do that to his own son?
It doesn't take long for Marcus to come back down, but by the time that he does, I have already finished breakfast, and am waiting for Tobias to come downstairs and have his breakfast so we can go.
When Tobias finally makes his way downstairs, he looks at me, waiting to leave, and then at Marcus, reading the news that erudite release every morning. Does he realise that this is the last meal we will have together, unless I choose the same faction as him when I attend the choosing ceremony in two years.
Everyone finishes what they are doing, and we get up ready to leave.
We walk down the street and everyone greets our father, everything is perfect for Marcus Eaton, except for his children, he has made everyone believe there is something wrong with us.
We reach the end of the street and there is a bus waiting, I don't know why we catch it because it doesn't get us to where we need to be any faster and we always end up standing, because the abnegation always stand because everyone expects us to give them our seat, because we are selfless.
When we get to where the choosing ceremony is held, at the hub, it is very busy because everyone is going to the same place. I see Marcus put his hands on Tobias's shoulders as we approach the entrance, does he even remember what he did to Tobias last night? Inside there are many people and neither Tobias nor I are enjoying it because we are both claustrophobic, he doesn't know I am though, because I try to hide it.
I don't think any other faction uses the stairs, except abnegation, because there was at least one person from every faction waiting for the elevator. As we walk up the stairs I see my brother struggle, I should make sure he's okay, because I don't think he's ready for this.
We reach the right floor, and when we walk in the room, it was not what I was expecting; the room is dim and has no windows. Tobias finds his place in line and Marcus stands in front of him.
"You know what to do" he says to Tobias, "you know what the right choice is, I know you do".
Tobias is not paying attention to anything Marcus is saying to him.
"I'll see you soon" he says and walks away.
Now it's just me and Tobias.
"Do you remember what I promised you?" I ask
"Of course I do, and you know you don't have to keep it" he says.
I'm ready to cry, I may never see him again, but I will because I will be there on visiting day.
"I'll miss you" I say.
"I'll miss you too, stay safe" I wish he didn't have to say that.
I'm about to walk away and sit next to my father, but before I do, I lean in give Tobias a hug and say "I will, I promise" and walk away.
As soon as I sit down next to my father, a dauntless leader walks up to the podium and the ceremony begins.
I don't pay much attention to anything that is being said, but I know many names have been called and many people have chosen. I only pay attention when I hear my brother's name.
"Eaton, Tobias" the dauntless volunteer says, and my eyes pop up and look at my brother.
I don't think he's figured out where he wants to find a haven, but he looks towards my father and I, cuts his hand and places it over a bowl of hot coals.
"Dauntless" the leader yells to the room.
Tobias walks away, towards the group of dauntless, and in my head my only thought is 'I promise'.

Hi guys I am just asking you to check out my new book it's called
The shucking girl
It's a maze runner fan fiction and the first two or three chapters are before Thomas.
It's based on both books and movies.
