Chapter 3

I wake up enveloped in darkness, it must be the middle of the night. I am in so much pain. It's unbearable. It's hard to get up since I was knocked out on the floor. My grey shirt is now crimson coloured, from all the blood. I look at my watch, the only decorative item abnegation allows because its practical, I was right it's the middle of the night. Around the time I visited Tobias in his room two years ago. I try to get up but it's so hard. After a long time of trying to get up, I finally do, and quietly sneak out my door to walk to Tobias's room, hopefully Marcus is in a deep sleep and can't hear my footsteps. I have only been in his room once since he left, and that was last year on the day of the aptitude test. I stand at his door, trying to convince myself to open it, I know I should but it's hard enough just looking at his door, I have known him to be dead for the past two years. I reach my handle out to the door knob and open it. Marcus never cleared out his room so it's still in the same condition, except for if I made a slight difference, which I do, the day he left he put the sculpture with the blue droplets on his bedside table, obviously Marcus hasn't been in here otherwise it would have been smashed like the rest of the things he collected. I have grown a lot in the past two years, most of it in this year alone, if he was still alive he wouldn't even recognise me. I'm not quite as tall as he was, when he left I was very short. His room is like my sanctuary, like a home, where Marcus would never look. He thinks I see Tobias as a traitor, because that's what I've made him believe. I open his drawer and grab out one of his jumpers, it would fit me now, and it still smells like him, I'm going to wear it to the choosing ceremony in the morning. I should get back to my own room, just in case Marcus wakes up and comes to see if I'm still passed out on the floor. I get to the door ready to open it, but before I do I turn and look back at the sculpture and whisper "I miss you Tobias, I love you". And walk back to my room, and go to sleep.

--------------------

When I wake up in the morning, I get dressed in my normal grey clothes and put Tobias's jumper on instead of my own. Marcus won't know the difference. I know he won't be here, since he's running the ceremony today, he had to leave early. I walk down stairs and make my scrambled eggs for breakfast. For the past two years I've know exactly what I'm choosing. Dauntless. Even though Tobias isn't there I'm still going, no matter what the consequences. I leave the house for the last time, and begin my walk to the Prior house, I was told I was to sit with them at the ceremony and go to the ceremony with them. I knock on the door and Andrew Prior answers.

"Hello Victoria, welcome, your just in time, we were about to leave" he says Andrew is a very polite man. "Thank you Mr Prior" I reply, politely as any abnegation would. His family pile out the door and they all gladly greet me. I have met Beatrice and Caleb a couple of times, but we have never really spoken.

"It's nice to see you" I say to them all, and they all nod because that is how we greet each other. We walk to the bus and when we get on we must stand, I keep looking at Beatrice, but she doesn't look back. The bus ride wasn't long but when we get to the venue of the choosing ceremony, you can see heaps of people. Like it was two years ago you can see at least one of every faction at the elevators, except abnegation, we use the stairs and walk up to the twentieth floor, where the ceremony is held. Mr Prior is a very selfless person, he holds the door open for everyone. When I walk in I see Jeanine Matthews, leader of Erudite, and she walks over to the Priors and myself.

"Good to see you Andrew, how is Marcus holding up" she says

"He is well Jeanine" Andrew replies

"We need to find out who is behind these rumors" she says

Natalie answers "I think we already know who that is"

"If it is someone from erudite, I can assure you we will find out who" she says "these are your children I don't think I knew they were choosing today" I block everything out until she starts talking to me.

"And what about you dear?" She asks,

"Oh sorry, I'm not a Prior, I'm Victoria Eaton" I say

"Ah, Marcus's daughter... I trust you will make the right decision" she says, and walks away. We go find our seats, because the ceremony is about to start. My father walks up to the podium and starts making his speech, I've heard it before, it's the same speech every year. As I did at Tobias's ceremony, I block everything out until my name is called, I get up and walk past Andrew and Natalie, Caleb and Beatrice must have transferred because neither of them are in their seats. I make my way down to my father, who stands behind the table with the five bowls representing each faction. I know what I'm choosing. He passes me the knife, and I cut my palm. The blood pools in my hand, I look up at my father and smile, reaching my hand over the bowl with hot coals. I hear the blood sizzle.

"Dauntless" my father yells to the crowd. I walk over to my new family.
