Chapter 1 (Age 16)

The pain from my back is unbearable. My father beat me last night until my whole back was covered in blood, not just part of it but all of it, because he thinks I will betray him just like Tobias did two years ago. I don't see it as betrayal though; I saw it as an act of freedom, or taking the first step to becoming free. I continue to drown in my thoughts until Marcus calls from the bottom of the stairs.

"Victoria, get down here!" he says using the tone he always uses when he is angry

I walk down the stairs quietly because it is meant to be quiet in Abnegation, and if I wasn't quiet my father would beat me even more.

"Yes father?" I ask, in a peaceful voice any Abnegation would use.

"Are you ready for your test? I know you know what you need to choose" he questions while glaring at me like I did something wrong.

"Yes, father I am ready for my test, and yes of course I know what to choose I'm not a traitor like Tobias" I say, but I didn't like calling Tobias a traitor because to me he isn't.

"You better get going" he says, all I can think is why is he being so nice to me for once, something must be wrong, what did I do this time?

--------------------

I am on my way to school, because that is where the test is held and all I can think about is Tobias. I know I won't find him because Marcus went to visiting day, and said he died on the way to the dauntless compound. I didn't get to go because I was locked in the closet. I will still choose dauntless.

For the first part of the day we had classes, but after lunch all the sixteen-year olds are told to sit in the cafeteria and wait for their name to be called. I am sitting with my faction, but I'm also sitting alone because people don't see me as a normal person, not even other abnegation, everyone looks at me differently because of what Tobias did.

I get lost in my thoughts.

After about ten minutes my name is called, and I begin to walk to the corridor when someone trips me.

"Better watch where you are walking stiff" A candor boy says. I recognize him from a couple of my classes; he likes to pick fights with people. He would fit right into dauntless; I think his name is Peter.

I just get up and continue to walk to where I am meant to go.

I walk into the room and the first thing I see is that every wall is covered with mirrors, from the floor to the roof. There is also a dauntless woman waiting for me, she doesn't look like the other dauntless I've seen, she doesn't seem as cruel as others either.

"Have a seat and get comfortable," she says. "My name is Tori."

I sit in the chair, putting my head on the headrest.

"Does the tattoo mean anything?" I ask

She turns around.

"You are very curious for an abnegation" she says as she looks me in the eye.

My curiosity is a mistake, a betrayal of Abnegation values. At least I'm not staying there.

She presses another electrode to my forehead and explains, "In some parts of the ancient world, the hawk symbolized the sun. Back when I got this, I figured if I always had the sun on me, I wouldn't be afraid of the dark."

She tugs wires toward her, attaching them to me, to her, to the machine behind her. Then she passes me a vial of clear liquid.

"Drink this," she says.

"What is it?" My throat feels swollen.

"You just have to trust me" she says.

I decide to trust her, I swallow the liquid and close my eyes.

--------------------

I wake up in a small room, I'm alone. The room is square and empty, and the walls are made of mirrors.

It doesn't take long before I hear a voice.

"Choose"

I reply. "Who are you? What am I meant to choose?"

As soon as I finish two tables appear. One table with a knife, and the other with a chunk of cheese.

"Why do I need to choose? What are these for?" I question.

"CHOOSE!!!" The voice yells.

I decide to take the knife. As soon as I take the knife the table disappear, and a low growling comes from behind me. I turn to see that what was growling was a dog. I see now why both the cheese and knife would have come in handy.

I can't kill an innocent dog.

I scream "I can't kill an innocent dog!"

I drop the knife and approach the dog slowly with my hand out.

"Hey, you're not vicious, you're just a scared puppy" I say to it.

Wait why am I talking to a dog? I think.

The dog no longer growls and comes up to me and I pat it.

"Puppy" I hear. I turn to see that it came from a young girl she looks a lot like I did when I was younger.

I turn back to the dog and it has started growling again, but not at me, at the young girl.

It starts chasing her, so I get up and chase after it. When I catch up to it I dive and land on top of it.

Then everything goes black.

--------------------

I wake up, back in the room with Tori. She looks worried.

Why would she look worried? Did I do something wrong? Is all I can think about.

Then she hurries and pulls me over to a door, different to the one that I came in.

"What's going on? What was my result?" I ask her, but she doesn't reply.

"Can you please answer my questions?" I ask again.

"You're the second one I've had today" she says

"What do you mean?" I ask

"You're different, you're not like the others, they call it divergent."

What's a divergent?

"What's a divergent?" I ask her the same thing I just thought.

"Someone with the aptitude of more than one faction, you are different, you have the aptitude for three." She says.

"What do you mean? Does it mean I fit into more than one faction!" I exclaim.

"Yes" is all she says

"Then what was my result?" I ask

"Abnegation...and Amity, and Dauntless" she replies, even more scared than before.

"What do I do?" I ask yet another question.

"Go home, you're the last person for today, you have a lot of thinking to do, and whatever you do, do not tell anyone about being divergent" she says in a more serious tone.

She pushes me out the door and all I can think is, what am I going to do?

I start walking home because I missed the bus, but if I did catch the bus I would have had to stand in the aisle anyway.

When I get home, Marcus is going to continue to ask me questions, but I won't be able to tell him, either way he is going to beat me.

What do I do?
