Chapter 22 Getting My Man (Maries POV)

Chapter 22 Getting My Man (Marie's POV)

Amber Denton. If there was one person besides Dewayne who I hated it would be her. We were in the same click of friends when I first got here. She was a year younger than me and was the talk of the town till I got there. Being in a small town where everyone knew everyone the talk of the town is not something you really wanna be.
When Dewayne started pursuing me Amber seemed to leave me alone. The first time I tried to leave Dewayne Amber slashed all four of my tires and cut my break lines making sure I couldn't go anywhere. Amber hasn't stopped since.
When I saw her walking toward our table at the diner Saturday night I knew it wouldn't be good. What a clusterfuck it turned out to be.
After Denton put Jamie in handcuffs nothing we said stopped him from taking Jamie to jail. In Denton's eyes he wasn't protecting Amber, Jamie was trying to feel her up in a public restaurant.
I went straight to the police station with Shay. We camped out in their lobby in to hard plastic chairs for hours. They wouldn't tell us what was going on with Jamie, and when he would be getting out. At 7am Sunday morning an older gentleman in a police uniform came to the lobby to talk with us.
It felt like I knew him, but for the life of me I couldn't place him. He pulled a chair front and center in front of ours and sat down. He had laugh lines around his eyes and mouth and familiar blue eyes. How do I know him? The officer took his hat off his head and ran his fingers threw his hair.
"Ladies I'm Sherriff Moore. I've come to give you an update on your friend Mr. Jamie Shaw."
I had to hold myself from jumping from my chair. "Yes, thank you. I'm his girlfriend Marie Long and this is my friend Shay Cook." He gave us both quick handshakes then sat back and cleared his throat.
"Mr. Shaw was charged with assault. It's just a misdemeanor but he will still have to wait to see the judge sometime tomorrow, and then someone will have to post bail. Their ain't nothing you two girls can do down here anymore. So why don't y'all go back to the motel and just wait."
I didn't want to leave this building without Jamie with me. Shay stood up first then held her hand out for me to take. Giving me her strength if I couldn't get up myself. I ignored her for a few moments were I could wallow in my failures. Sherriff Moore was almost at the door when I stopped him.
"Sherriff has there been anything new about my children Bree and Alex Long or their father Dewayne Long?" Shay and I both caught the pulled look that crossed the sheriff's face at my question. He wiped the thought from his face before looking me in the eyes and saying "No." The Sherriff made it through the door letting it slam for effect.
When Shay and I got back to my room we were both quiet. After 10 minutes Shay finally broke the silence. "Sherriff Moore sure did act funny when you asked him about the kids didn't he?"
"Yea Boo. I was thinking the same thing. Why you think he acted like he's never heard those name?"
"I don't know Boo, but I gotta be heading back to Memphis. It's still a long drive. Love you. Give me a hug and I'm leaving."
I got off the bed and wrapped my arms around her in a bear hug. "Love you Boo. Be careful and call me."
Since she walked out my door yesterday I've been replaying everything the sheriff said in my head a million times. The worry my mind had me goin through made sure I didn't sleep.
Monday afternoon I'm back in the same room of the police station waiting on Jamie. I'd already paid the bond he owed they were just taking their time releasing him from the back. I was reading the signs on the wall something to take my mind off Jamie when the little brown bulletin board caught my attention.
It had flyers for all the missing children in the state. There were 7 different flyers tacked on the board. None of them were of Bree or Alex though. I looked at the dates they were all reported to see if they were just old. But the last one, a 3 year old girl from Tilla, was last seen 4 days ago.
So it's up to date. Then where are Bree and Alex's flyers?
