Finders Keepers (Epilogue)

The first ray of sunshine filtering through the frosted window glass saw Jill kneeling on the floor, beside her bed and inspecting the chest in her hand.

Now that she knew the murderer was caught and the boy’s heart had been found at his home, she had finally decided to check the contents of the chest.

Opening the latch with a certain sense of trepidation in her heart, she set her eyes upon the same wooden, painted clown mask as the one that she had seen in town for the county-fair…

Jill was perplexed…What did this mean? And why would someone keep this mask in such an elaborate setup?

But again…no one knew that…and she was most likely never going to get the answers to these questions…

___

That afternoon, after her father had left for work, Jill travelled down the trail leading to the other side of the hill and reached the carrot field from where she had dug up the chest.

She glanced around to make sure that no one was watching before moving deep in the middle of the field and pulling out the still, strangely upside-down carrot, started digging a small pit…big enough to fit the chest lying at her side.

However this time, she worked with the help of her father’s small, red garden spade, which she had taken from his tool box.

After about twenty minutes, she was patting the soil with her small feet, leveling it before sticking the carrot back to its place; this time upright.

Thereafter, dusting the dirt off her hands, she moved back towards the path leading to her house, a deep sense of satisfaction filling her even though she had just returned her first discovered treasure, never to look back again….
